    Ray i really appreciate your knowledge and encouragement. I have worked under the operations manager of a mom and pop property management company for ten years doing “maintenance” which i now have come to realize was the companies in house handyman position. Im completely comfortable doing all walks of handy work but i am crazy nervous about running a business. The condo i have primarily worked at is shutting down for four months for repairs and if i want to eat during that time, i am essentially being forced out of the nest. I am both crazy excited and wildly nervous. I will keep watching your channel for encouragement as i go out on my own. Going to do your master class next. Thanks again man. You rock.

    Something to keep in mind even if you pay for expedited LLC through legal zoom is that it still takes like 2 weeks to get the state to approve it. I wish I would have done sole proprietor first and then had the ability to work before it got approved.

    hey man i just wanna thank you, watching your videos I started my handyman business. I am a paid firefighter but I have a lot of time off and decided to start the business. Watching your videos helped me a lot for the licenses, insurance and ideas. I didn't to spend that much because my previous job was in construction so i have the tools and experience but my biggest challenge now is to find clients. Awesome video like always.

      Just Curious, not a slam as Firefighters are my favorite first responders, and as a member of Cert, they take very good care of our training, and support us hugely. But, they are Union, make killer benefits and a decent wage (Should make more) but the ones that "side-job" handy man gigs around here in my experience over the last 40 years see it as a "Cash" operation, and not wanting to have issues with the union are un-licensed (I really could care less about the license, except it costs me), carry no insurance, and even though they have all that time off they find out very quickly that Warranty Calls happen when you're not available.
      Profit in business boils down to not how much you charge but how much it costs you to make it. Cheers to you if you obtained a Business name, Business License, GLC insurance, and Commercial Vehicle insurance on that family car you are using for work, and I hope that if you work with any water or electrical that you have a backup person to provide cover if a house starts flooding and you can't make it.
      Sidenote: Being a Firefighter in an active house probably ages your body 5 years to an average persons 1. Construction with it's ladders, steps, material weights, lifting, twisting, working on your knees etc.. is the same. If I was doing this as a second gig in your place I would specialize in high skill, high dollar, low labor projects, thinking trouble shooting electrical/plumbing, Window Screens, honey-do's like fixture replacement, picture hanging, drywall patching, and the like.

      @@johnhubbard6262 i just do small things on my side, no because of the money because doing overtime I will do more, it is because I enjoy working with my hands and I feel that make me disconnect. Of course I am not taking big projects or anything that can cause my a lot of stress on my life. Another thing is that sometimes I can help older people on a pension by not ripping them of doing small jobs. One thing I learned real early is that I love trade work and I considered myself a blu collar worker.

    Have you done a video on your day to day business work? How do you handle expenses, receipts, investing personal money into the business, taking personal withdrawals from the business? Everything I've seen on your channel has been on the basic function of startup, not really operation. I still have a lot to investigate though.

    • @bulletproofhandyman
      @bulletproofhandyman  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have a lot of that information spread out amongst a lot of different videos. How you pay yourself can differ depending on what your business structure is but the safe route is to use payroll and have your account that's care of most of the rest. I'm currently learning QuickBooks and will make a thorough video on it when I feel like I have a good grasp.

    I have a lot of experience and construction in home remodeling and decided to give it a try as a side hustle. I have all the tools and experience needed for almost any home improvement project out there. Place my ads on craigslist, register on Google, register on Yelp, next door.. Not a single call beside one from Instagram, which was a bigger contractor size project. I couldn’t handle for now. And also bunch of nonsense calls like advertisements or lead generation companies. This is a sad reality from me right now. I’m not sure how to get out of this.

      I would suggest pitching property managers of single family homes. I haven't spent a penny on advertising in the last 3+ years since I started working for them. They are like a money printer hanging on the wall if you know how to take care of their needs.

      All the things you mentioned are Advertising, this is for established companies. If you are solid, and reliable just one job with a Property Manger will bury you if you are a one man shop. I have been doing this for 40 years and built and sold many companies. Bullet is handing you the keys to the City, he is preaching stuff that some folks never learn.
      For driving homeowner sales you just need One, That one will tell their friends and you will find yourself buried in work and having to limit referrals.
      You find that one with "Gorilla Marketing" (Look for the books). But the basics are your ability to sell yourself, not the work. For example I am retired but I have a vested interest in a previous partner I sold a company to. With as little as a business card, and engaging in casual conversation in every day life I can bury him in work causing him to beg me to stop until he is ready to add a truck.
      Over the years on startups I boiled this down to just one technique - Pick a trade, plumbing, electrical, lighting, landscape etc. For our purposes I mostly did Plumbing Service and Repair so we will go with that. On a Saturday go to the Depot or Lowes in your area to that plumbing isle with all the pissed off customers and no help in sight. Wear something that says pro, for me that's jeans, boots and a button up work short with my name on it, start listening, and start helping. It will go like this, You, this is the part you want, this is how to use it, this is what to watch out for, Them, I didn't realize it was that involved, do you do this kind of work. Me, yes, but you can do it, a regular plumber would charge you X-X$$ give it a shot. Here's my card, if you run into trouble you can call me and maybe I can walk you through it over the phone. Them, You don't just want to do it? Me, No, I have enough customers already, but you seem nice, so I am happy to help. By they way we also clear clogged drains, the prices are right on the back of my card (Sinks/Tubs/Showers from the fixture $85, From a Clean/Out $95, Clogged Toilets $99, and Sewer Main Lines from $150) - Trust me, 2-4 hours working this will net you 5 people that are going to call you, and a Depot associate that is coming up to you for answers, and loving your help.
      NOTE: It's important that you are not Working Sales / Negotiating, you are just a Home Depot Pro Customer being a nice guy and handing out a card if they ask for it. If they ask the customer if you were looking for work, they will say why no, he turned it down, but said I could call for advise if i got stuck. You say the same thing, they know you are driving sales to the box store (They track department sales by the hour, and if a Pro is working the isle you can send those up a noticeable amount)
      Not Recommended: My first Drain Company I drove to over 5k customers by just working the drain cleaner section. I stocked the shelves for them (They just figure your a vendor), and put my card on the back of every drain cleaner product I stocked. It said "When this Doesn't Work - Call me Drains cleared $55. When they picked up that bottle of lye/Acid, I asked do you have safety glasses? and baking soda? When they said why I noted the back of the bottle says you can be blinded, and that the product was warrantied to not hurt your pipes (It Will) or they will give you a free bottle but not replace the pipes.

    I’m getting started with my business thanks to the videos I watched of yours. Taking your masterclass was definitely the best way to get all the information needed to get started. I’m just curious, how would I do my bookkeeping? Should I hire someone or manage myself until I can afford to?

    • @bulletproofhandyman
      @bulletproofhandyman  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I started off with an accountant right away, based on lessons learned in the past. If you feel like you know how to do your bookkeeping then there's definitely nothing wrong with doing your own. For me, I get far too busy with the actual work to be able to keep up with the bookkeeping at the same time. I do all the invoicing, estimating, etc, but I don't try to take care of anything tax related on my own.

    Do you let your clients know there’s a trip fee ?
    I have been finding a lot of resistance when I let them know that’s
    Just this morning someone reached out with their ac needing service
    An hour away
    On a Sunday
    As soon as I said
    There was a trip free for coming out
    He said he didn’t feel comfortable with me and went with someone else who didn’t charge a trip fee
    Should I just add it to the invoice next time ? I like
    To be clear to avoid any issues
    What’s crazy is that I have done 3 ac services this week and charged trip fees with minimum resistance
    But I did get resistance on a garage troubleshoot job

    • @bulletproofhandyman
      @bulletproofhandyman  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I think you're better off letting them know. The clients that you lose by charging a minimum are the clients that you don't want in the first place. AC companies don't come out to look at a broken AC for free. Some do free or cheap "inspections" but thats only to sell you a new system. If it's broke, you're paying an HVAC company at least $150 on the low end just to show up. Don't worry about losing customers who don't value your time.

    Is the business license you refer to the LLC? Or are talking something like a contractor's license?

    • @bulletproofhandyman
      @bulletproofhandyman  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      At bare minimum, a business license. If you're trying to start a serious business then it needs to be an LLC, but for new guys who are looking to do some handyman work on the side, at the very least they need to have a business license.

      @@bulletproofhandyman I suppose every state is different in some way. I've been doing Handyman work on the side with my LLC for 3 or 4 years (I'm targeting the professional side of things and am not doing it for beer money). Already have insurance too. Just didn't realize there's potentially a business license or what exactly it might be. LIcense to do business, I suppose!

    • @bulletproofhandyman
      @bulletproofhandyman  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Every state is definitely different. Some states issue licenses at the city level, or county level, or state level, or all of the above. The LLC is just the entity that applies for the license, at least in most places.
