I like that you show imperfect passes, imperfect results and are willing to try things on the video and share the tries with us. I trust this type of review so much more than someone who is perfectly polished and scripted. Really Really appreciate the review!
I appreciate it Matt! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much! I recently got one of these from my 9-5 as a "Thank You" gift for my year of service. I was a bit timid about the quality but when you are just using a bench planer, anything else is a God send. This video has given me the courage to unbox this and I feel this table build will finally be done soon.
Great job showing the accessories and how to properly use this. I am glad to be a new subscriber to your channel.
WOW! I was just about to go to Home Depot and spend big on an electric planer for a small deck project. While having morning coffee, opened the you tube app and your video was front & center. I just saved big. Thanks for the review.
Always happy to hear I helped! Thanks for watching!
Clear and concise instruction on how to adjust and use the Wen Planer......I especially liked your visuals descriptions on how the front shoe depth adjustment works at approx. 3:10 Thank You
Thank you for the run-through on this tool. I’m a newbie, and I consider it a huge plus when someone does a demo that isn’t perfection necessarily, but shows you what to expect right out of the gate. Very helpful - I’m already thinking about a mod that would stabilize that rabbet accessory to fix the accuracy issues. Thank you!
Thanks for watching and good luck!
Great video! I’ve had one sitting in a box for 5 years. Never used but thanks to this video I’m gonna bust it out!
Thanks for watching!
I've had mine for 3 years now and it has been great!
Glad to hear it! Thanks for the comment!
super helpful in showing what to expect when using this tool. excellent video. thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Great demo, thanks for being so thorough!
Glad you liked it Tyler! Thanks!
Good job with an honest demonstration. Thank You!
Just watched this, Mike, and appreciated it. I am waiting for the Wen 4-3/8" version to arrive now!
I bought the same planer a few months back. Haven't used it yet, but I'm getting ready to, thanks to your video. I may try facing some "unpurposed" 2x stock, to see how it does.
I would definitely recommend some practice before you risk a door or more expensive piece of wood! 2x4s are cheap (kinda)! Thanks for watching!
This was so helpful! What an excellent demonstration!
Glad the vid helped Jessica! Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much, I just got this and this was super helpful 🙏🏽 Subscribed 😎
Love hearing I helped! Thanks!!
Just got mine... Thanks for the tips!
Glad I helped! Thanks for watching Tiffany!!
Free video. Thanks for posting and showing us how to use it. 👍
Thanks for watching Jimmy!
Very well thought out video with and great presentation skills. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this excellent video lesson. I am going to buy one and try it out.
Good luck and be safe! Thanks for watching!
Appreciate you demonstrating the tool good or bad like you said it was cheap and it’ll serve my purpose. thanks again
Glad the vid helped! Thanks
Got one coming Friday im mostly going to use as a jointer. Much cheaper than a traditional jointer but works the same way
Great demo for a tool I have in my online shopping cart. Purchasing for planing those horrible fence pickets from the big box store. Desperate times, desperate measures 😁
Should work great for that Cherie! Thanks for watching!
Excellent demo on this unit.
Thank you!!
2 years later, great review. Thanks!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the little clip and yes, I do have the next size up from the WEN you have showed as
well as a 13" planer and I am happy with both purchases since I am not a professional and just
fiddle around with them.
It took me a minute to make sute that you not wearing a Submariner and am still not sure if it is
an expensive brand watch or a look-alike and yes, it's the design I wear and I leave the good one
in the safe while wearing the Casio not to worry about scratching it up when messing around on
the Diesel or other stuff - take care!
Hello John! The watch is a Seiko Samurai PADI edition. Not dirt cheap but no Submariner. I figure if it’s good to 200 meters it’ll survive me beating the snot out of it. Eventually we’ll get that other track saw and the planer for review. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your updating responding mail, nice choice and yes, I do like the same diver style and
robust watches too since I am messing around
water often and am a bit too clumsy to wear an
expensive watch most of the time.
Take care and try to stay out of trouble!
Very good review (I have been a self employed building contractor since 1972) !
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your honest video
Nice detailed video!
i've used a lot of electric hand planes over the years and only my bosch has had a fence that i actually trust. that being said, a square block of wood about the length of the planer double stick taped to the heal sole makes a very servicable and quick fence. i've used that method pretty much every time i needed to rebate construction lumber where i'm not sure about what fasteners i might hit. i'd rather trash a $40 wen rather than my $180 bosch.
Just got mine and wondering if I could use it as a paint scraper by gluing a really thin piece of plexiglass on the bottom so the blade hits the paint and barely touches the wood. The 1/64 minimum setting would get down into the wood I'm afraid.
I was actually looking for some instructions of how to plane a wide board easier. I have a 22 inch Live Edge that I'm making a coffee table out of
I’m sure it’ll be a future video at some point but I have a lot lined up for the next month or so. Sorry I can’t help you with this one. Thanks for the comment.
Great job, Thanks!
Thanks James!!
Thanks for the demo. I"m looking for a cheap planner.
Glad the video helped. Thanks for watching!
Where can I get the dust bag. I have the smaller one and did not come with one
Aww, geez. Screw my old hand plane. This is awesome. GETTING ONE!
Thanks for watching!
super video, thanks man!
Thanks for checking it out!
@@ProjectsForAllReviews I got one to use as well for cutting and using pallet wood
@@aman4peace That’s a great use for the Wen. Free wood and a dirty cheap tool. Thanks for watching!
thanks for the video. It seems around 6:10 where you stopped had grooves....or is that grain? thanks
Looks like grooves. Could be because I lifted the tool off the work but could also be the way too deep 1/8 inch pass overworking the tool. In real life I never plane more than around 1/32 at a time. Lots of small passes are better IMO. Thanks for watching!
Can this be used to shave door bottom to shorten the door height due to flooring?
I'm thinking about the wen for replacing my old makita cheaply for the once in awhile use on high joists and nots sticking proud. It looks like it throws the chips just fine.
It’s still working well for me! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for a great video. Do you know by any chance if this tool can be used on MDF? Thank you.
Short answer is yes. I’ve used it on the edges of cheap interior doors and those are almost like cardboard. I would test it on scrap first though just to be safe
I have a door rubbing the sagging top frame/jamb of a door. Is a planer a good idea or better to sand?
Swelling, ill fitting doors it’s the main reason I own one of these. Much easier than sanding if you need to take off a fair amount. I find taking off a very small amount at a time and making many passes gets the best result. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Your advice: What's better to use a cheap router with appreciable tr/m or this tool to make angles ?
Beveling an edge? I would use a router every time over this planer. Definitely more consistent results and a more uniform edge. I’m sure you could get good results from the planer but it will take practice. Thanks for watching!
so this cant be used to shave door to adjust height?
You're meant to use the thin metal flap, near the back of the fence attachment, as a handle. You use that to push the fence into the wood, stopping you from weeble-wobbling around on the edge of the thin board.
yeah i was looking to get one of these they have one at harbor freight for 29 dollars. but i think i am going to get the boshe one for 80.
Of the 3 I’m sure the Bosch is you best bet! Thanks for watching!
Good information.
Thanks for watching Neil!
Good video subbed.
Thanks for watching!
The blades on the first one, and the replacement WEN sent me were not straight. One of the blade set screws stripped and they sent me a free replacement, which was nice of them. But even after adjusting the blades on the replacement to get them as evenly as I could, it still would not cut flat. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but I gave up on trying to use it.
Honestly I’m surprised we haven’t heard more stories like this considering how ridiculously cheap it is. Skil sent me they’re version of this same planer for a review. Should have that vid out in a week or two if your still shopping. Thanks for watching!
Same issue for me…My Dad (who won’t be around much longer) flew out to visit and helped build a large window bench top with me. After he left I only had to plane it, sand it, and stain. The planer destroyed it, leaving uneven gouges and lines. I’m VERY upset as it’s something I can’t just get myself to throw it away as it was one of the last projects my dad and I did together, yet it looks really bad
@@nwembly Can you email me pics of the damage. I’ll try and give you some advise. Email is projectsforall60630@gmail.com
Does that dust bag fit on the WEN track saw?
Good question. I’m out of town til Sunday. I’ll try and remember to check for ya
I bought a Cheap one from China on a certain site which I'm not sure I'mn allowed to name on ur channel bro so?!? ....... Fook it I'm ..It's Banggood and the tool manufacturer are called TOPSHAK.. The electric Hand Planer cost me 33 Euros bro. I haven't used it as of yet but u gave me the inspiration to get out in the workshop, I call it my workshop but I haven't fixed it up bcos of work committments. I work full time so time is hard to find at the end of every day. Every time I make plans to build out my workshop someone needs my help to do something else and my day is always gone.. LMAO. This is the time now for me to get building out my Workbenches and Mitre station.
Thanks for this brilliant video my bro.
Gonna finish now by wishing U and ur family a very Happy Xmas and every success for 2023. Same sentiments go out to all in the comment section throughout YT.. Apologies for my long winded comment bro. Salute from IRELAND!
Hope you had a great Christmas! Thanks for the comment!
I attempted to plane a 2x4 that was not straight. When I finished three passes, I put a level on the board, and there are still high and low spots. Why?
This is going to be tough for me to help you without pics. I’d be surprised if there isn’t a vid on TH-cam showing exactly what your trying to do though. Good luck and thanks for watching!
David,
The hand planer front shoe is v short; it simply follows existing hi/lo spots and replicates them - as you noted. Proper tool is a Jointer with a long table (24"+). Alternate is table saw with long fence (eg, Unisaw), but jointer is best.
I bought used fence board, 4 inches wide. I want to get the grey off of the boards so I can repurpose them as walls inside a van. So far I’ve sanded about 8 of them down with a palm sander, waaay too much work. Would this planer do the job? Would it be pretty even if I had to do a few passes to accommodate the wider fence board?
Hello! A hand planer will be much more efficient than a palm sander but will still require a little technique and finesse to get the grey off. Planer and palm sander after will probably get good quick results. Check out my first ever vid for before and after cedar fence pickets with a bench planer. Good luck! 03:30

@@ProjectsForAllReviews so I’m just new to woodworking, can I ask, would a belt sander be better or a planer?
Both would work. The hand planer IMO would work better with the palm sander to clean up any lines left on the board. The planer only works if you have a loose board with both ends exposed for a start and stop point. The belt sander will remove material anywhere you put it and works better when the boards are attached to something and secure. Belt sander will tend to want to take off in one direction and throw the loose material in the other direction. I used a Makita belt sander to remove multiple layers of paint and varnish from my wood porch. I think it’s best suited for that kind of task. I hope this makes sense. Let me know
@@ProjectsForAllReviews that makes perfect sense, thank you very much!!!
Plz review WENs latest portable tablesaw, I love WEN value, products
It’s on the list! Thanks for watching!
QOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS MACHINE TO PLANE DOWN RESIN FROM A FLOOD POUR ?
You are 100% out of my area of expertise with this one. Googling “how to plane floor resin” produces a wealth of videos and articles. You should be able to find your answer. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the detailed review. But the soda can on the table saw, makes me sweat a little. No drinks near the tools. You don't want that rust.
Lol! Good advice. I have a bad habit of doing that.
So is it just this planer that you shouldn't cut across the grain with?. I just watched another carpenter cut across the grain with a Makita planer, and it worked just fine. Now I am confused because I am hanging a slab door into an existing jam and need to plane off a little off the bottom, which will go across the grain. I don't wanna buy this if I can't use it for that purpose, and I don't wanna buy the expensive Makita one. Someone please let me know.
People do it but I was taught never to plane across end grain. You also risk damaging the door. Better to use a circ saw to cut off the small amount from the end of the door. Use a track saw or straight edge clamped to get it straight. Safer and probably easier to get a good result. Thanks for watching!
@@ProjectsForAllReviews Thank you for responding.
Something I have never understood about these... how does it make a board consistently flat along the length of it, rather than simply taking more and more wood?
I’ve never used an electric planner to try to achieve a straighter or flatter surface. It is however a great way to remove a small amount of material across an edge. Thanks for watching!
👍
1/28th??
Doesn’t seem to be catching any dust
I thought this was big Ben Roethlisberger 😂
That's a new one!! Thanks for watching!
Hey for $40 bucks, that's pretty good :o
Thanks for watching!
It's a pity the guard isn't as sturdy to give straight rabbits. As you suggested in the review with the skil planer the guard is better engineered. I think you could fix the guard on this one by spot-welding a strip of sheet metal between the pieces of the guard to provide additional support. I was looking at the equivalent Porter Cable planer and that guard has that support..same as the skil one. The only thing the porter planer doesn't include the adjustable rabbit depth stop.
You can clearly see he wasn’t shooting for that at all. His guide wasn’t even touching up gains t the stock several times through out a single pass.
@@johnblack8187 ...Hmmm... That's a good point.. The first pass had some wiggle in the back and then the second was even worse, the guide wasn't pressing on the side ..
@@mpcp27 I’m sure if it was held steady up against the guide it would be much better looking results.
You guys are right. I watched it and the second pass I’m off the side. I didn’t notice it in editing. I picked up a Ryobi planer for a 3 cheap planer comparison vid I’ll do in the next couple months. We’ll have to revisit the this and see if I can get a better result. Thanks for the comments!
@@ProjectsForAllReviews that’s cool. No big deal. Just figured you were more concerned about the review than perfection cuts.
The depth adjuster is crude. After hours of frustration I removed the knob and dropped the front plate. I shimmed the plate to make a fixed depth of somewhere between 1/64 and 1/32.
The design, while similar to other lower cost planers is terrible due to a way less than precision fit. I have spent more the the cost difference in minimum wage time trying to get a reliable adjustable depth(cuts ok at fixed depth).
This machine is not a quicker way to plane than by hand when pieces are ruined. I am not a satisfied buyer. Perhaps I’ll epoxy a good fitting sleeve to the area of the body that is so flimsy it can’t be expected to support the front shoe and then maybe not. The next will not be a WEN
This tool would be worth $40 bucks just to avoid the blowouts I've done with a hand plane.
I’m no hand plane master and I agree! Thanks for watching!
that rabbit may have be better done on a router table
This one is garbage
Bla bla bla bla...
