    This video helped me so much, thank you! Trying to do an at-home DIY butcher block desk like this. This is exactly what I needed. I had no idea what to do!!

      I'm sure it will. Just take you time and it will be great. I've been using it for a few months now, and one thing I would differently is I'd take down the edges on the top and bottom. I only took down the edges on the top, so take a bit of time and hit the edges on the bottom.

    I dunno what it is about it but hand rubbed poly looks and feels so nice on real woods and you don't gotta worry about brush marks

    Great video. So I bought the same butcher block and the natural color is growing on me. Do you think I can just sand and just put the polyurethane on it?

    Great vid. ! . If I just want the natural color , can I just use it as is? Or do I still need poly?

    In the middle of the same project. So far it's looking great. Did you use the factory screws from uplift to mount it?

    Do you have any knowledge / advice pertaining to the polyurethane needing 21 days (for water-based, 30 for oil) to fully cure? I'm trying to go water-based due to not having a proper place to work on this (using a common laundry room / basement area), and that 21 days is brutal if accurate.
    Thanks a lot for the breakdown of specific techniques (like the full stroke polyurethane brushing, I had no idea and would have messed that up), very well done!

    • @Mannyocrity
      @Mannyocrity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used a water-based poly because I also did it in a laundry room/ceiler. Mine was only 2 hours between coats. It was Varathane

    • @gemfruitgames
      @gemfruitgames 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Mannyocrity 2 hours between coats for the polyurethane, yeah? Varathane keeps coming up, so that'll likely be my route.
      What I was referring to, is the "curing" / hardening period for the polyurethane. Apparently it's suggested you wait up to 21 days to actually put things on the desk (monitor arm clamps, desktop tower, etc). Seems kind of excessive with so many DIY setups using them within 24-48 hours, but apparently that's the science behind the drying hardening process.

    • @Mannyocrity
      @Mannyocrity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@gemfruitgames 21 days is probably for it to be fully cured, but there is usually a time to use. I believe the varsthane is 24 hours.

    I have a couple of questions
    Do you use mineral spirts if you aren’t staining it? I want to bring the natural colors of my wood out and did you sans your last coat of poly? Thank you!

    • @daeroc
      @daeroc ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mineral spirits is mostly used to clean dust off from sanding. He used it here as a prestain conditioner. You also use it to clean brushes if using oil based poly and stain. So basically sand, tack cloth, prestain, stain, poly, sand, mineral spirits, tack cloth, repeat poly.

  • @AtohV

    What is the use of Mineral Spirits? Not too sure exactly what it’s use is

    • @Mannyocrity
      @Mannyocrity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is used to clean and treat the wood. It gives the stain a more even look. Without it, the stain will look more blotchy.

      Agreed, as someone who just did this, I made alot of mistakes and am tempted to sand down to bare wood and start over.
      It was the poly that I messed up badly. Wish he showed his mistakes and how he fixed them.
      I ended up fixing mine with alot of patience and sanding, it's still not perfect but I diluted my poly with mineral spirits which worked WAY better.
