    On Her Majesty's Secret Service was one of the best Bond films. Ironically, it was panned when it was released. According to Diana Rigg, Lazenby was a complete jerk during the filming of the movie. He expected the full star treatment because her was not used to being a celebrity. He has admitted this himself on interviews.

    • @scrmepal
      @scrmepal 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +jeffrey a All true.......except the film wasn't panned........there was just not the full acceptance at the time from the public of another actor playing Bond.......as this was the first time of a changeover in the lead role that had occurred, and no one knew what to expect, or what effect it would have on the franchise!

    • @scottknode898

      jeffrey a he was difficult to work with on set and even Producers Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli couldn’t stand his behavior and thought he was too cocky as thought carried himself as big star. Director Peter Hunt didn’t like Lazenby and they had a difficult working relationship on set as well to the point of Hunt of not working with Lazenby on training him as an actor for the role during filming or not giving him advice. Lazenby’s cockiness annoyed Broccoli and didn’t like his arrogance. Lazenby told his agent he didn’t know if wanted to play anymore and that didn’t make producers happy when found out he was planning to leave the role

      Donald Pleasance, as much of a phenomenal actor as he was, his take on Blofeld was just bizarre. Telly Savalas' Blofeld was a megalomaniac who was really concerned about the bigger picture and had a really crafty evil scheme. And the small elements in his acting, like the way he held his cigarette or stopped in the middle of some of his sentences only to prolong the vowel in another word to emphasize the point he was making really made the character complete.
      Christoph Waltz was godawful as Blofeld imo, even Charles Gray was better. I've always rooted for Ben Kingsley to be Blofeld. He would have nailed it.

    Interesting that here he claimed he had no regrets leaving the role of Bond. At other times he’s said it was a mistake. Clearly he’s of two minds concerning James Bond. Given time, he could’ve made the role his own, but bad advise and his desire to fit into the counter culture made it impossible. Still, he’s maintained a somewhat below-the-radar career for all these years, which is admirable considering he seems to have disdain for the entire acting profession…

      Keven Klayne George Lazenby was originally offered a 7 picture deal that would have netted him a lot of money and probably have gone on to be a great James Bond had he stayed on at least for a few more times. He turned down to star as Bond again and resigned as Bond during production of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. He was supposed to Star in Diamonds Are Forever and would have been a darker Bond film it was going have Lazenby back avenging the death of his wife Tracy. Telly Salavas would have been back as Blofeld and Illse Steppat as the hench woman Irma Bunt with Bond killing them off in the movie. That all changed with Lazenby quit the role and actress Illse Steppat died after production ended for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service in 1969 of a heart attack

He wanted it all now! Wanted to party 24/7 all the women fame money without giving back the responsibilities the role came with. Such as refusing to cut his hair shave beard as he wanted to look like a mod. He certainly could have re-invented himself had he put in the work ethic. In this film (the most difficult) producers and director must not give Bond's role to a non-actor, hoping he will do it. O.H.M.S.S. was shot as in the book, and Bond is an experienced man in the book as well as in the sixth film. Look at the actors in the other roles. All experienced and professionals. Producers and director must adapt the film to Lazenby, or to help him (in the original script, Bond undergoes plastic surgery to disguise him from his enemies, and to allow an unrecognisable Bond to infiltrate Blofeld's hideout, and help the audience accept the new actor in the role. Wikipedia). Until now the producers - with a more conventional Bond films - did not provide the role of Bond in a model that is no actor and is completely novice.

    James Bond star George Lazenby pays tribute to Sean Connery on his 90th birthday:
    georgelazenbyofficial
    Happy 90th birthday to the all time greatest @007 - Sean Connery. Sean, for me, was always the man. I walked in his footsteps - I had to look and dress like Sean Connery - I went to his barber's and tailors. I had no fear when I went up for the role - he was the guy who inspired me to never hesitate. Another thing we have in common is that we're both family men, so best wishes to Lady Connery, your kids and grand kids and stay safe. Love George x

    I concur with many of the pro-Lazenby/OHMSS comments on this thread. I think he made an excellent Bond. He was an great physical actor, his fight sequences were excellent and he looked like he could handle himself. The film itself is grossly underrated I think too. It's one of the very best in my humble opinion. Far better than the contemporary Craig films on so many levels. Lazenby's Bond displayed wit and humour, which made him likeable. Craig is a cold fish, devoid of any warmth or humour.

    OHMSS was the best film of the franchise. I don't know if it had been that good with Sean Connery. Incidentally, Connery (IMHO the best Bond) never played James Bond in any film with action in a snowy setting. With Connery it was always sun and/or tropics, I can't really imagine him performing ski stunts or any bobsled action.

    OHMSS is my fav Bond movie, and I thought Lazenby was terrific in it. He was the perfect mix of toughness, sophistication, and vulnerably. A shame he didn’t do more and let Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman work with him and refine his Bond. He probably would have been the best Bond had he kept going.

      You just don't like the act of Roger Moore, but there are enough people who liked him whit that. So he just is another kind of Bond. It shouldn't be good when every Bond acted the same. You can't say Lazenby IS better, but you THINK Lazenby is better than Moore.

    • @Actionguy1
      @Actionguy1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      LeMeir No sir. I KNOW that Lazenby was a better 007 than Moore. Not taking anything away from Mister Moore. He was a wonderful actor, just not the caliber to be Bond. 007 was never written to be a "Fop" until Moore took over the role.

      Yes, Especially since Lazenby was a new-comer to the acting universe, at the same time, Roger Moore starred in "The Saint", an espionage tv show in the 60s, so Moore had a better idea of what espionage brings to the table for an actor.

    How wrong can an actor be? It's true that Easy Rider was a smash in 1969, and hippies, and Woodstock, but man, he had the part. He was badly advised, and was also inmature and arrogant. It's true that by 1970 the franchise was in a bit of a low point, but it came back with a vengeance in 1977. Another low in the late 80s, but came back strong in 1995, and again in 2005. I'm glad Roger took over in 1973 though.

    "This never happened to the other fellow" lends credence to the theory that James Bond is a codename handed down to each 007 and each Bond is in fact a different person. While all of them are still with us, they should do a special feature with all of them meeting up just for fun.

I think it would be a fun and yet moving thing for a movie to be made with all the James Bonds and they are giving advice to a new agent on how to do/or not do the job and maybe even say something about the death of Tracy that occurred with the one who got married.

    They should have cast George Lazenby in For Your Eyes Only. In the opening sequence of this great film James Bond visits his wife's grave and poignantly places flowers on her grave. This would have been a great reintroduction for George Lazenby and would have worked as a sequel to On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I feel that For Your Eyes Only is a classic Bond film and one of the best but it had the misfortune to go up against Raiders Of The Lost Ark and came off second best.

    I guess Lazenby's reasoning makes some sense. An actor today would never turn down an offer to play Bond again if they'd already completed one film. But back then, they had no idea Bond films would be around for 50 years! Still, it would be pretty hard to turn down a million bucks. There's probably lots of guys around the world today who are much like Lazenby. They've got little or no acting experience, but look the part. However, unlike Lazenby they'd probably be happy with the million bucks or even a tenth of that.

      +scrmepal Yep, you've got to wonder who Lazenby's agent was and whether or not they went on to have a successful career. Even though Lazenby made some bad acting career decisions, apparently he got into real estate and made a shit ton of cash. Perhaps in the long run he made the right choice....he's an extremely wealthy man, but not famous enough to be harassed every two seconds on the street by annoying fans.
