I never get tired of watching this. Several things really strike me, your use of building flats and the way you hide the goofy grey base of the fast track. Both masterfully done. The run down factory fronts are just a superb detail that really make the industrial scene come to life. Just beautiful!
mrlionel1965 thanks so much my friend! I'd like to do another one of these ride along videos now that the layout has had some new items added. It would also be cool to do it as a steam engine ride. Sounds like a plan soon!
The Horseshoe curve brings back memories. When I was 12 years old my first long ride on a train was from New York City to Pittsburg. Thanks for the memory.
What can I say, excellent, from that view, it brought out the the attention to detail and work you've done. What a way to have a morning cup of coffee.
Beautifully done, highly detailed layout. You have a very sharp, keen eye for detail and it definitely pops out in your layout. Thanks for sharing this phenomenonnal layout with us!
New perspective on your layout. Loved the engine sounds,UP caboose,Heritage high cubes, and of course your beautiful layout. Lot of time put into this layout. Nice job Nick, thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much Al! I'm glad you enjoyed the new way to see my layout! The gopro is a cool toy. Speaking of toys....when are we gonna see that imperial Dreyfus on TH-cam?
Wow! What an empire . Amazing work. I am Modeling Montana Rail Link in Kansas Lol. So I can appreciate all your work in the tunnels and mountains . Really enjoy your videos so thank you .
I just took my first cab ride on the the Pittsburgh Industrial Railroad and it was definitely worth the price of admission!!!!!! It was great to see your layout from the rails Nick. Your videos are always so professional and really showcase your work. Great job my friend and thank you for posting!
Your layout has so much depth and detail! The GoPro really allows you to see every aspect from eye level making everything look life-size. Excellent video and layout!
AWESOME train ride Nick!!!!!!!!! The layout is looking great as always, the detail is amazing and I really like the UP #8444, love the horn, one of my favorites! Anyways, thanks for the video bud and keep those trains rolling!
Thank you very much Bill! I'm happy you enjoyed the ride! The 8444 has the best diesel horn in all of o scale trains in my opinion. It's the same horn that is used on the NS heritage #1982. I had that engine and regret not keeping it. I'm surprisingly happier with the UP engines though. The amber ditch lights are awesome on it and match the paint job. The crew talk is sweet too! Take care buddy! Thank you again!
That was fun Nick! Great prototypical action. Your layout is amazing and has to be such a blast to operate. The scenery is looking amazing too. Thanks so much for the vid and keep up the great work.
Great video Nick! The layout looks very realistic from that point of view. Felt like I was in the cab of the engine and riding a real railroad, keep up the great work!
Hey Nick, the video with the GoPro turned out fantastic!!!!.....You feel like your riding in the engine....That worked out good like we talked about with the NS Heritage Box Car Train....I like your intro with engineer......Really cool video....All your hard work looks great!!!!!....Also cool seeing the switches throw
Thank you very much Ron! The heritage train did look cool as a passing train. Have to make a full video of all the beautiful box cars mth made. Thanks again my friend! 👍
Nick, very nice train ride. Now that's what I'm talking' about. This is such a cool way to check one one AWESOME layout. Man-o-man, I hope the aliens behave...
Love this vid. It shows off all angles if your layout. A creative suggestion here.. Maybe elevate your cam a slight bit to window height (if you can), find a pic of the inside of a loco, use MS paint to green the windows out, and do a chroma key in your vid software. This will give you an engineers view from inside the cab. I have the CNW 1995 version on this engine. I love it. Your layout is one of my favorites!! Fantastic as always..
really cool....i prefer the HO cab ride vids of course without the third rail that takes away the realism effect but this is really good for three rail..
Thats cool! I also do Go Pro train rides on my temporary test track, and I have the Lionel Katy UP 1988 SD 70 ACE, however there is a problem with the engine that I've tried to fix over the years. I'll do a video on it in the near future and show you. You're more of an expert than I am so I think you can give me some advice.
Love that 1st-person view from the GoPro! Just curious to know if you operate any vintage Lionel trains on our setup, particularly anything from the pre and post-war periods?
That is one heck of an awesome layout. Nicely done! I really admire all of the little details you've added. I'm curious, how many hours did it take to make a layout like this? Lots of maintenance, too I would imagine. My hat is off to you, sir. Awesome job!
I installed a z stuff signal system on all the tunnels. It ale arts the operator when trains are approaching from the other side of the tunnel by turning red. It's useful to help avoid big wrecks.
LOL!!! I will have to ask....you are getting me hooked....been out of this for a long time...going to order the UP SD40-2s out of volume 2...gonna start a layout!
Lol! Hey just be safe man. Go at your own pace, don’t buy to impress other people. And most importantly choose a theme or style you like and stick with that. That was my issue, I deviated away from that at times and made allot of impulse purchases. It’s all been fun tho and will continue ahead “on track” 😃
I haven't been in it too much since my dad passed....we were into big back in the PS1 era....I bought a few legacy items here and there...im actually more impressed with lionel….I grew up along the UP main line into Chicago, the old CNW and I think im going to focus on that....LOL! the only impulse purchase I will make is UP and CNW SD40-2s....and if lionel ever makes a C30-7.....My father worked for the Rock Island, then CNW and finally the BN....I want to make some layout to honor him were he worked and my personal memories....I don't remember the Rock Island to much as shutdown was march 31 1980 and I was only 3.
Great video Nick and what an assume layout it is truly amazing the Legacy systems are very cool. Just one question how big is the layout it looks like it takes up a couple of rooms? Thanks for sharing
Nick, thanks for the very nice comments. The layout does span across two room and is 20' x 23'. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Thanks again.
Hi thanks! Yes, I have different track in each room. The reason for that is because the main Pittsburgh room was done first, and when I decided to add the horseshoe curve room I wanted more realism so I used Ross custom switches track. In the future I may upgrade the fastrack to Ross. It would be a complete overhaul so I'm in no rush.
Very nice, I am starting out building a layout for o scale, my question is how much transformer do you use to power a system like yours? Thanks for any help.
paul brassy I have 4 180 watt Lionel powerhouses powering my track. And I have various other transformers to power accessories. But my layout has about 260 ft of track so it needs all that "Juice" 🍊😄
That is one amazing layout you have. how long have you been working on it ? What scale are those trains? I just shot a short train video at my friends house, he is in the process of creating an outdoor track. check it out, i'd love to get your expert opinion on it.
Not really. There’s only 3 switches on the mainline that are 036. Now with that being said the correct way would’ve been to have larger switches but you live and you learn. It works for my purposes. Besides my inner loop is 048 so I have no business trying to run a larger train in there anyways so doesn’t really matter
This is awesome! What a great video. Quick question, and I apologize if you spoke to it in another video, did you convert the MTH light towers to utilize LEDs? (The two at the end of your yard).
Hi and sorry for not telling sooner. Yes I converted those two towers to have led lighting. The grain of wheat bulbs were burnt out so I decided to give the LEDs a try. Looks good!
Don't know who that clown was, but his choice in hockey team was subpar. ;) Great video Nick! Lol. Quick question for you. Do you still have the Lionel Pennsy sharknoses?
Thanks coop! The pens are my team no matter how these last couple post seasons went lol. 91,92 &08 for life! The sharknoses have departed. I wasn't happy with their performance and dumped them before the warranty was up. The newer legacy engines I have are running strong. Knock on wood!
Ahhh, ok. I was actually looking into getting a set, but maybe I'll just save my money. Did the one light on the back of the A ever shutoff or did that always stay on? I heard Lionel is having all sorts of quality control issues again. I have to send my Lionel NS heritage back because something went on the Odyssey control, but can't until they finish their move to NC in August.
Hi and thank you. Yes all the trains are controlled on the same tracks. The stop light system is made by mth. I have two sets to make up a full intersection. Thanks again!

This is such a cool Video - very well don e- shows off a super layout and awsome consists along the way!

I just took my first cab ride on the the Pittsburgh Industrial Railroad and it was definitely worth the price of admission!!!!!! It was great to see your layout from the rails Nick. Your videos are always so professional and really showcase your work. Great job my friend and thank you for posting!
I'm sure I already said thank you through a text Darren but officially now, thanks for the nice compliments!!! 👍
Your layout has so much depth and detail! The GoPro really allows you to see every aspect from eye level making everything look life-size. Excellent video and layout!
Can't wait to get my engine just like this. I see them here in Denver all the time pulling coal and tankers. Awesome layout ! Thanks for sharing!
I like the fact that you added in the horse shoe curve I don’t think iv ever seen a model railroader do that
Thanks so much! I really wanted the curve on the layout since I love the pennsy and it makes the train feel like it’s going somewhere
Nice ride along. Really like the ceiling tile rock faces. That’s what I used on my layout. Different color tones but same affect. Great audio too.
Funny and awsome video keep up the good work. I love the train horn on the up sd70ace.
Thanks!! This engine has one of the best horns in the biz
AWESOME train ride Nick!!!!!!!!! The layout is looking great as always, the detail is amazing and I really like the UP #8444, love the horn, one of my favorites! Anyways, thanks for the video bud and keep those trains rolling!

Hi Jason. Thanks for the very nice compliments on the video!! Sorry it took a while to reply. Hope you had a great summer buddy. Take care.
Going to York Tuesday. This is one of the engines I'm looking for. I got to run a Texas Special SD 70 Legacy last Saturday. Great engines.
I live in South Texas and see NS,UP,CSX,KCS,BNSF,CN and CP. it's pretty cool watching em go in and out of Mexico.
Awesome tour of the layout! That horn on the Lionel UP SD70ACe sounds like the horn on an NS SD60E.
Thank you! The horn on the 8444 is awesome 👍👍👍
Wonderful ride! Enjoyed the cab view and great camera work/quality. A most impressive layout. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed the ride. Your compliments are much appreciated!
🚂🚌🚌🚌🚌
Great video! I enjoyed the ride around your layout. NS Heritage
Box Car Train looks very nice!
Thanks for the nice compliments. I'll be making a video showcasing the heritage fleet soon. Take care
LOL! Absolutely fantastic! Love the sounds affects, the walking up to the engine, the sound of the engine and it runs great! Well done! :)
Were ridin' on the 8444 today alright? Lol. Thank you!
Really cool, I visited Pittsburg (loved it) a few years back and I spotted all kinds of familiar scenes and stuff. Really great layout, nice job.
Thank you very much! You'll have to come back to da burgh again soon!
Do you live in Pittsburg PA or a different state.? I live sort of nearby in PA
Excellent vid and an amazing locomotive. The cab ride was a treat! Thanks loads!!
Thank you for the nice comment on the video and layout! 😊
Hell of a job!! Nice work! nice ride thru too!
Great video Nick !! Love the train ride video that make it seam so rile!
Glad you enjoyed the ride! Sorry I didn't reply sooner. Thanks again!
Like your train layout and the train action on your video.
I have that same 8098 Conrail ES44. It's a Beautiful locomotive!
Great video Nick! The layout looks very realistic from that point of view.
Felt like I was in the cab of the engine and riding a real railroad, keep up the great work!
Sorry for the late reply, but thank you for the nice compliments! Much appreciated!
Nice Nick. The PGH is looking good. Nice to see you found an 8444.
Hi George! Thank you for the nice comment. Yeah the 8444 is a cool engine and has a great sounding horn! Take care
Loved the cab ride! Your layout is very impressive. Saw UP at the Curve just last week.
Hi and thanks for the nice compliments. I see UP power all the time on the NS mainline. It's shocking to some people I guess? Lol.
Beautiful layout. Well done my friend.
Hello PghTrainFanatic • I like the goofy engineer. Excellent views from the on board camera. Thanks for the ride.
• Cheers from Michigan
Hi Gary! Sorry for the delayed response. I appreciate the nice compliments! The engineer is a full blown train nut job! What a wacky guy! Lol
Hey Nick, the video with the GoPro turned out fantastic!!!!.....You feel like your riding in the engine....That worked out good like we talked about with the NS Heritage
Box Car Train....I like your intro with engineer......Really cool video....All your hard work looks great!!!!!....Also cool seeing the switches throw
😂 thanks Wil!
Fantastic video! Your layout is truly great, and I'm very impressed with all of the lighting. I also love the motive power!
-Cam
Thanks for the kind remarks. Much appreciated!
love the layout and the horn on the 8444
Thank you! I know this diesel horn is my favorite one Lionel has made I think. Like music to the ears! 🎶👂😄
Love your layout! Thanks for the tour:)
i love your layout nick!! love the crew talk too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok so few things one is that's a nice horn, two is that's a funny engineer, and three i love the 8444
That's funny....when my dad worked for the BN out of Eola there was a brakeman that talked like that....
That was good work. Nice job. I enjoyed it.
Awesome video! Added this one to my favorites! Thanks for sharing
Great to hear! Thanks Steve!
really cool....i prefer the HO cab ride vids of course without the third rail that takes away the realism effect but this is really good for three rail..
This video was awesome. Keep up the good work Amari
I appreciate that Amari! Thanks for watching!
Great run and view of the layout
Thanks Jeff! Glad you liked the video!
Your welcome!!
Beautiful model sd70ace engine
Thank you very much!
what an amazing layout, great job! is it possible to see this is person?
Thats cool! I also do Go Pro train rides on my temporary test track, and I have the Lionel Katy UP 1988 SD 70 ACE, however there is a problem with the engine that I've tried to fix over the years. oh maaan I want that loco & BNSF's in HO scale hehe
have the GP 30 844 already
Awesome video Nick.
Thanks Guy! 👌
Gorgeous!!! I'm curious how much time and money have you invested in this beauty. It is fantastic!
at 5:38 is noticed a signal going into a tunnel. Is your layout setup with a block system?
I installed a z stuff signal system on all the tunnels. It ale arts the operator when trains are approaching from the other side of the tunnel by turning red. It's useful to help avoid big wrecks.
HOLLY MOLLY!!! YOU LOOK LIKE MY BOSS!!!!!!!!!! you gotta a twin here in Chicago!
Hahahaha is he Greek?
LOL!!! I will have to ask....you are getting me hooked....been out of this for a long time...going to order the UP SD40-2s out of volume 2...gonna start a layout!

That’s a fantastic idea to model a layout in your dads honor! Sounds like you have your plan already! Good luck with it, I’ll check it out!
This is the union pacific 8444 o scale diesel locomotive. Riding on this? Hmm, might be lucky. I Like that!
Thank you!! It's a nice smooth ride. Lol
Your welcome!!!!
Very impressive!
Yes! She has the #1982's horn.
Yes! The best horn! 📢
+PghTrainFanatic And CN 8002's horn. I think it is the best one Lionel has ever made.
It sounds more like a CSX horn.
This is so cool, riding on front
Glad you enjoyed it! ☺️
Nice train set!
Man, that can't be a cheap set up, I bet you got over $100 just in trains?
Great video Nick and what an assume layout it is truly amazing the Legacy systems are very cool. Just one question how big is the layout it looks like it takes up a couple of rooms? Thanks for sharing
Nick, thanks for the very nice comments. The layout does span across two room and is 20' x 23'. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Thanks again.
Does the union Pacific SD70ACE have a k5hll horn instead of the k5lla in real life?
Very well done!
Thanks Jason! Hope you're doing well. Appreciate it buddy!
Awesome layout there is one question I have do you have fast track in the main room with the city and Ross in the horseshoe curve
Your model train seem small but it big and it have a lot
Thank you! There’s a lot!
Have you ever thought of getting a Lionel Phantom engine?
Very nice, I am starting out building a layout for o scale, my question is how much transformer do you use to power a system like yours? Thanks for any help.
paul brassy I have 4 180 watt Lionel powerhouses powering my track. And I have various other transformers to power accessories. But my layout has about 260 ft of track so it needs all that "Juice" 🍊😄

Doesn't it scare you having 0-36 switches on a layout with trains that require as much as a 0-72?
Not really. There’s only 3 switches on the mainline that are 036. Now with that being said the correct way would’ve been to have larger switches but you live and you learn. It works for my purposes. Besides my inner loop is 048 so I have no business trying to run a larger train in there anyways so doesn’t really matter
Funny how their voices changed to a more mature lot
Great video! Best Regards
Thank you very much! ☺️
Did you scratch build the steel mill? Or is it an HO kit?
I Scratch built the blast furnace myself. Not a kit
@@PghTrainFanatic nice! I'm working on a steel mill right now
Lmao the beginning has me laughing!!!
Looks good!
PghTrainFanatic Looks awesome! No need to apologize.
Nice video! Lionel should hire you for crew talk recordings lol
Dispatcher we need some new voices! Lol
Lionel keeps using the same guy in most of their trains.
yah it's annoying
Wow!!!! You layout is impressive do you control all these trains on one track and where did you by those stop light signels
Hi and thank you. Yes all the trains are controlled on the same tracks. The stop light system is made by mth. I have two sets to make up a full intersection. Thanks again!
Yes your welcome n you please make a video showing how to run more than one train on a single track I don't know how. (
:(
Sorry I accidentally deleted your question: You have to run the trains in command mode to operate multiple trains on the same tracks. The two most popular systems for o scale trains are Lionel's legacy system and mth's dcs system. They can get a little pricey along with the command equipped engines. Mth makes nice RTR "ready to run" sets that come with a small handheld device to operate the trains. And the best part is if you were to upgrade to the dcs system those engines have the command equipped electronics inside already. Lionel doesn't offer anything like that yet.
Oh thanks I have a DCC command
Is this layout in the basement or room
Hi, my layout spans across 2 rooms in my basement, I have 2 other smaller adjacent rooms in which in has the yard, a conventional winter themed carnival layout, and shelving. The other room I used for my tool/workshop and more train storage. So in total I took over 4 rooms of my basement lol 😂😂😂 sorry to my wife 🤪
Awesome!
Thank you!!
why does it have a 3rd rail??
if you're talking lionel, the signal is sent via outer rail. the outer rails are ground and the center rail is power. It makes the train move
So cool
The mail car I have it
Cool
Thank you!
