My Uncle grew up not having much and he spoiled his kids especially his son who has him wrapped around his finger. When I was a kid and I wanted something and the folks said no I would get angry and upset but now I thank them for it. I've really had to tighten my belts these past couple of months. I live with my mother after my dad died and we had to do some home repairs and I have to pay back money in my provincial income tax. I haven't bought anything from Amazon since April and I hardly buy from Dollarama in awhile but I get by. Even when I needed Cartridges for my Printer I didn't because I couldn't afford it.

I help with my four grandchildren but no one ever asks for a thing - it’s what’s in my comfort zone. I watch for sales like crazy. My grandson is being homeschooled for a year because of a tough bullying situation last year. I spend $150/month on art lessons and lunch, but only because I can, not because I must. He loves a half day of being an only child……me too. The 11 year old is crazy smart and got two seven year scholarships through middle and high school. That helps! But it’s certainly not easy. It’s true it takes a village.

And if I was strapped for cash every month I would definitely sit down and try to figure out where my money is going. Shannon & Pete from another episode were a perfect example. Also folks don't realize that little things add up. Coffee on a daily basis, borrowing from abm's with service charges, credit card with high interest charges, buying lunch every day. My cousin always whines about being broke, but he will put his account into overdraft so he's not a victim of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). He's like Mario from Princess who spends more than he makes.

As a single parent of one on a retail income, I kept a running list titled “I WANT & I NEED” of what my kid said. I saved $200 (sometimes a little more). Christmas was $100 on want & $100 on need gifts. Sometimes their wasn’t any gifts. Plus the same (1 want/1 need) for birthday but it was a $50-100 budget. And anytime someone wanted to know what to buy, I sent them the list minus what I was buying and what I didn’t want them to have. And I never had to deal with temper tantrums inside the store because they simply knew to put what they wanted on my phone and a photo to be precise.

    • @bookmagicroe9553

Kids need basic clothes for school, for play, for dressier occasions. They need a sweater, a jacket, a coat, some underwear and sox, a sweatshirt. Boots and mittens and warm hat. Those can all be bought on sale or at the Second hand stores, or swapping with other parent's kid's clothes. Most will fit in a small closet and dresser. Then hand the clothes down
to the next kid, when the first kid outgrows. We always bought jackets 2 sizes too big and got two years out of them. Then they went to the next kid.

I've seen it many many times that couples that don't share finances don't last and they end up in massive debt in the end up keeping secrets from each other. If my husband wouldn't let me look in his bank account as I let him look at mine I would be completely suspicious we budget together we Bank together we spend together and we've never ever been in debt but I understand not everybody has been taught that. I'm so lucky that I have a husband is not like that. It is our money our children even know all of my four children we're from my deceased husband this is our family now. Jane Baker - What do you mean? Regarding the fruit...the bigger kids automatically consume 'more' than the smaller ones and she pointed that out so they could know why the older boy has more on his plate. Regarding the money - of course, the older they are, the more they'll need or 'think' they'll need. So, I notice the older kids gets more money than the younger. But, I wonder what was the $408 for on the pie chart; she didn't mention that. (I speculate it's for bills)

I thought the same thing. Especially telling the money value....it will build resentment between the kids, especially as they age. I know it is petty now, but growing up we were poor, and as a kid I had perfect vision, but I was mad that we HAD to spend a lot of money on my brother's glasses/contacts that I didn't get spent on me. I don't think you can EVER be fair about expenses on each child...they have different needs. (However child support through the courts DOES pro-rate each child's money. Sigh!)
