He was completely lying when he said he goes days without food, and his whiny, immature, dramatic attitude makes it hard to believe someone whould actually put him in charge of running a multi million dollar business. I feel bad for his kids having to look at that as an example of manhood.
Personally I don't think people "owe" children anything. The little girl does a lot around the house, but that is still the house they pay for. Children should help their parents. Without expecting pay.
Chores are important. There should be chores that children should be expected to do, and there are extra chores that children should be paid for. We were not paid for bringing our laundry to the laundry room, cleaning up our toys, doing the dishes, sweeping the floor after meals, setting the table, helping out with dinner prep etc. We were paid for vaccuming, mowing the lawn, organizing the boot room, washing the floors, folding laundry etc.
Their daughter was getting paid to babysit her brother not for doing chores around the house. My husband and I, personally, don't do allowance or $$ for extra chores because our budget doesn't allow for it so, our kids get paid with tv/computer time or later bedtime. We teach them the value of a dollar with birthday and Christmas, along with, money made at their summer jobs mowing grass and corn detasseling.
It doesn't have to be a lot of money, but you should give your kids some money. This is how kids learn how to manage money. If they don't have money to manage, how are they ever going to learn? Kids make many money mistakes when they are children, so they don't have to as adults. My sisters and I are all excellent money managers. Our rule was save 10%, give 10% and spend the rest. WE would take 10% of our money, and put it in a jar called a "giving jar." When we collected enough we would give the money to some worthy cause. My parents had 4 kids, limited income and armloads of debt when interest rates were at 24%. If they can give their kids money, I'm sure you can too.
Parentification pushed on children by irresponsible adults is rage-inducing. Poor Carlye.
Meh, my older siblings babysat me all the time. It's pretty normal in larger families (I was the youngest of 5).

You could house sit and have a safe place to eat and shower.
Guy's a total loser with champagne tastes on a beer budget. There's no shame in living modestly and within your means, and not sure why he thinks he's too good for that.

I agree.
I think giving a little money for house cleaning is good so they understand things cost money. But no allowance for cleaning your own room.
