Diverting from the “no dribbles” theme but maintaining the 1 on 1 aspect, Kobe showcases his usage of two dribbles to create midrange pulls. Contrasting from one dribble yanks, two pounds allows him a greater separation opportunity as the defender is forced to guard beyond one stride. It’s important to note that Kobe does this when appropriate, he doesn’t take a second dribble unless the floor spacing permits it.
Whether right, left, baseline or middle, the direction he heads is always weak-side, or to an area of the court thats open and without impeding defenders - 1:13, 2:28, 3:06, 5:10, 5:52. In many instances, Kobe utilizes a low swing/rip thru in order to gain leverage on that first step - 0:59, 1:30, 3:20, 4:36. As his matchup works to recover, Kobe gets to his spot, stops on a dime and elevates into a fadeaway.
Kobe was primed to sit back and work his defender while isolated - 1:44, 4:50, 5:59, 9:05. He also had the ability to go quickly - 2:42, 3:26, 4:22. On many occasions, Kobe is tasked with shooting over multiple players. As he puts the ball down, a second defender leaves his man to run at Kobe and contest - 0:42, 3:48, 7:48, 8:49.
Regarding footwork, the majority of clips include Kobe using his customary 1-2. He hops into the gather, landing on both feet only a couple of times, typically doing so when manufacturing last second space requires a slight bump with the defender as he picks up the ball - 2:51, 4:43, 7:23. We also see a bit of his reverse pivot “step out on the catch.” He goes quickly on these as well - 1:52, 8:02, 8:09.
My personal favorite is 8:22. It’s the definition of “getting to your spot.” He uses that cross-body step I referred to in the jab step video. And although Kobe gets virtually no closer to the basket, he creates both space and seemingly perfect rhythm with those two dribbles. He rises up and knocks it in, straight as an arrow. Great job on the breakdown and the video, as always. 4:28 might be my favorite clip because it happened in my favorite Kobe performance. His 52-point game vs Dallas in the 07-08 season is beautiful. I love watching the highlights from that one. And Mike Breen's call on the play makes it even better. On a different note, the clip from 2:05 is from an 02-03 game I don't think I've seen extended highlights from. I wouldn't mind an upload from that game if you have footage, Dom 🙏🏾
What draws you to the 52 point mavericks 07-08 game so much?.. over all others. I’m curious to know. And i too do not hold his highest scoring performances amongst my favorites. 46 points at knicks 02-03 and 50 at clippers 05-06 are in my top 5, if not my two favorite. The absurd shot making prompting total road crowd electrification is what does it for me.
The 2:05 against jazz was from 42 points on feb 1, two games before the 9 straight 40+ started. Not too much exposure i guess because it isn’t apart of the streak. There is an old upload of it…

@@dcshow I'm drawn to the game against Dallas mainly from an aesthetic standpoint. One of the things I love most about Kobe is the beauty of how he operates on the court, and to me his performance against Dallas is one of the best examples. The step-throughs in the post, the ball handling in traffic, the left hand finishes, the purity of the jumpshot, the off-ball movement, the floaters over big defenders. It all just looks so graceful in that game. And he pulls it all off in a tight matchup that goes into OT. The pressure doesn't disrupt his composure at all.
There are also some moments in the game that stick with me. After his interview at the half, he picks up a towel in his walking path and tosses it presumably to the bench, but it accidentally hits an older lady in the face. I shouldn't laugh at that, but I do. During the game, Mike Breen mentions how hard it is to believe that Kobe at that point had never won an MVP, and Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson say that Kobe has been the best player in the league for at least 3-4years at that point. I appreciated hearing broadcasters point out some of the reasons behind my thoughts on the MVP and media coverage of the NBA. Down the stretch, Kobe makes a tough and-1 over Dampier to foul him out of the game. After the play, Kobe shakes his head with this expression that says, "he can't stop me," which was probably related to an earlier exchange with Dampier. Later, Kobe gets a clutch rebound off a missed free throw seconds after JVG says he doesn't like the Mavs leaving Bass on his own against Kobe. And lastly, after another big rebound in OT, Kobe walks to the bench and tells his teammates, "Oh no no no. We ain't losing today." It's an entertaining watch.
Thanks for the link to the Jazz game! When I clicked on it, I saw that I had already gave it a thumbs-up, so I guess I did see it before. But I wish the footage was clearer, which is probably why I didn't remember seeing the clip.
And to double back to the favorite Kobe performance discussion, there are some others I can mention. Game 1 against the Spurs in the 2001 WCF. Game 4 against the Kings in the 2001 semis. The 65-point game against Portland in 06-07. Game 3 against Denver in the 2009 WCF. The "He Can't Guard Me" game against Houston in the 2009 semis. Both games against the Knicks in 02-03. He looked like a video game in those two. I could keep going, but I think I've bombarded you with enough words.

You mentioned some of the memorable playoff games. 40 pts against rockets game 2 is also up there in my favorites. His killer mentality was on full display. When i think of that one and 41 pts denver game 3, i can’t help but think of the 2011 series against dallas. We didn’t see that type of aggression.
I felt like the lakers had become almost too reliant on balanced production. It was phil’s ideal approach that everybody be a threat to contribute, instead of kobe manipulating the triangle too frequently for looks, but as a result we didn’t see kobe tap into that prime level of scoring when his support was struggling or in a must win game. He hurt his neck and ankle in the new orleans series, but didn’t use that as an excuse. I’m also hesitant to think kobe was less hungry or somewhat satisfied having 5 rings, but it would be understandable.
36 pts and nearly the game winner in game 1, game 2 should have been more of the same. Although minimal roles, perhaps things would have been different with farmar and vujecic still on the bench. Looking back, i’m surprised they were able to win 57 games that season in what was still a loaded western conference.
That is Masterfull basketball, same thing Jordan use to do, Kob break them all, minimal effort maximum effect. Both MJ and Kob could do what ever they want in mid range, there is nothing you can do about it, double team, tripple team, hand in the face, it dont matter, they made a living in the mid range by cooking everyone

Different types of mid range shooters. Hamilton made a career moving without the ball - coming off endless screens, spotting up in transition, etc. In doing so, he was dependent on guys like chauncey to call his number and deliver him the ball. Whereas kobe was highly proficient at creating for himself.
