There are four versions:
The *orchestral original* (1786) is a masterpiece (*****).
The *choral version* Haydn made in 1796 with additional instrumentation (an extra flute, two clarinets, two trombones), the a cappella choral chants of the actual words, and an extraordinary interlude for wind and brass before the fifth word, is also a fantastic piece (****).
The *piano arrangement* (1787), authorised by Haydn, but by an unknown hand, is useful for personal use (**).
The *string quartet arrangement* (1787), was made by Haydn and was a pragmatic move by composer and publisher to preempt anyone else doing the job.
It is an arrangement, a string quartet reduction, and as such is not representative of Haydn’s mature quartet writing style - there are uncharacteristic stretches of melody with basic chordal accompaniment for example.
This version is massively over-rated, and over-played (*).
