Realistic Day in the Life of a Freelance Web Designer & Baby YouTuber [VLOG]

  • It’s been almost a year since I quit my job to pursue my web design/art business full time, and about 4 months since I started uploading videos to youtube. In this video I’m showing you what a typical day in my life looks like (or as typical as it gets when every day looks different). I unbox some new filming gear, make a lot of food, and work on a web design contract and client portal in Notion. You'll get to see some of the behind the scenes stuff that I feel like people don't really talk about when it comes to making youtube videos and also doing freelance web design.
    My little youtube channel is growing and it’s so exciting 🤗 thank you all for being here and for watching my silly videos 💕

    Hiya Jen!! You're WAY more serious a TH-camr than I aspire to be!! I think I may enjoy living vicariously through you a bit though. In my other TH-cam life, I make music videos, and I store my clips onto a fairly big drive, and back them up regularly. In this TH-cam life, I may one day figure out how to vlog,...or not.

      @jenwebbcreates  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      aw thank you! so for your music videos, would you save all of your old footage after you're finished making the video, even the footage you didn't use? I'm debating whether to delete all of it and only save the finished video 🤔 anyway, I hope I can inspire you to start vlogging too! but if not, you can live vicariously through my videos haha 😆

      @@jenwebbcreates So far, I've been keeping all the "raw" stuff, just in case. A couple of times, I've "remastered" the videos, to improve on things I no longer like in the first versions. So far, I'm not close to the tipping point...yet.

    I do not store all my old footage lol i delete it. I have an external drive where i store my final video versions. But i delete all the clips i filmed. I think of the final video as the highlight and most important clips so everything else gets thrown out haha

    • @jenwebbcreates
      @jenwebbcreates  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yeah that's true, I am just worried that the one part of the video I need will have like text on it or will be zoomed in weird or something lol. but the odds of that are probably very low haha. I'm thinking about only saving a few clips here and there that I might use for b-roll some day and deleting the rest.. like a b-roll library 🤔

    Hey Jen! This is awesome, 4 minutes in saved this to my "Great vlogs" playlist. I just quit my full time job Dec 2023 so I'm justtt starting my journey as a freelancer (Video Editor) and have wanted to document everything. Been watching a lot of this kind of content to see how I can elevate my videos going forward. Glad this one popped up, you're doing great!

      wow! that means a lot that a video editor saved my video to a "great vlogs" playlist 🥹 thank you! I think it would be so interesting to see vlogs chronicling the life of a freelance video editor, I find video editing so fun and fascinating. I wish you all the best on your freelance & youtube journey 💕

    Use a SSD hard drive for editing videos (active projects) I use Samsung T7 with 2TB. Then use a cheaper drive at 4TB for archiving old projects. 1-2 4TB drives per year, also makes it easier to find old content for repurposing.

    • @jenwebbcreates
      @jenwebbcreates  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ok this is so helpful thank you for sharing ! So I was right in thinking I’ll just have to keep buying a new hard drive every year basically. I didn’t even think to get a faster ssd for editing. I tried editing from a hdd once and it was so slow so now I edit directly on my laptop but I’m going to run out of space eventually.

    • @johnmscotland
      @johnmscotland 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Once you have your SSD Drive you only have to buy new cheaper archive drives each year, as the SSD is only used for active projects you are editing which are later moved to the Cheaper Archive drives once completed.

    I love the personality of your art style. Maybe you've already been doing this, but I encourage you to target ideal clients that appreciate it with a fair budget. I'm ignorant of most of your situation, so I'm sorry if I'm speaking out of turn, but don't waste any time groveling for work. You can find clients who value your work and pay the value price for it. And I'm sure you have reasons for the structure of your services, but a brand identity is a big deal and should be recognized as something far more than an additive prerequisite for web design. Some clients have a way of smuggling in an entire branding service because they don't understand just how valuable it is. As a designer myself, I've experienced countless clients who "just want a [fill in the blank]" and then end up bundling it with a brand identity on a steep discount. I saw on your site that design projects may start as low as $2,500, but your time, effort, and style is worth more than that low minimum. I know this is unsolicited input, but I'm an advocate for designers finding clients that they can partner with to make great fulfilling work that meets everyone's needs mutually rather than clients who inadvertently pit designers against Fiverr. Freelance should not be a race to the bottom. And like most artists, you probably want your work to improve, and the best way to do that is to find clients with a budget that allows you to spread your wings and try new things. Keep doing what you're doing and, unless you're already working on $10k+ projects, raise your prices! You should find clients who pay that much for branding alone before the website cost. And thanks for sharing your journey!

    • @jenwebbcreates
      @jenwebbcreates  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      this is such valuable insight, thank you so much for this advice. the truth is I know I should be charging more but I think imposter syndrome definitely keeps me from doing that, although I am working on it. almost all of my clients so far have also been friends so I give them a little discount. I'm hoping once I get more clients that aren't friends I can start charging more what I'm worth. but I should probably start by raising the price on my website lol

    • @davidanieland
      @davidanieland 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely. You're doing awesome already. And you're giving back to the community by sharing your experience. And it's easy get stuck in a phase where it feels like your clients are doing you a favor by being your clients. That power dynamic contributes to imposter syndrome. Your professional relationships need to reinforce your worth. Don't settle. 👍@@jenwebbcreates

    Hi Jen, loving the font at 0:14! What font is it? Would love to see a video on picking fonts & colors for projects (especially for beginners like me!). I am surprised, how you handle everything individually. Thanks!

      that's Ivy Presto Display, it's an adobe font. I think I used the light italic style there and brought down the tracking a bit. and that's a great idea for a video! thank you 😊

    Hey Jenn! I see some TH-camrs who have those big lights, they get some sand bags and put them on the base to hold the light. Maybe something to try in case the dumbbell gives you any issues. 😊 Subscribed!

    I had the same issue with my hard drive filling up too fast 😬 Not sure if I'll regret it but I typically all or most of the footage after I've finishing exporting the final. I figured if I ever want to reuse old footage I'll just skim through those videos.

    • @jenwebbcreates
      @jenwebbcreates  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s what I’m debating doing. I’m kind of comparing it to physical junk in my house, like do I really want the default to be “let’s save everything just in case we need it someday” ? I feel like a hoarder 😅 I probably won’t use 99% of the footage I’m spending so much money on to store

      I’ve been filming in 4k but releasing in 2k, that way I have room to zoom in without the shot getting too blurry. But exporting and uploading was so much quicker when I was uploading in HD lol
