hi I'm Jen and I quit my engineering job to start a business designing websites and making art. I post a video every other week (sometimes more) about web design, productivity, and also vlogs showing what life is like for me as a freelancer 🙂 Follow along if you're interested and also let me know in the comments if you're on a similar self-employed/freelance journey, I'd love to hear your story too 💕
Is Framer the Best Website Builder? My first impressions
Check out Framer and sign up for free here: framer.1stcollab.com/jenwebbcreates
As a freelance web designer, I’ve been wanting to try out Framer for a while now, but I just never gave myself the time to sit down and look into it. If you’re unfamiliar, Framer is a website building platform that rivals competitors like Squarespace and Webflow. As someone who primarily uses Squarespace to design client websites, I was blown away with how much better Framer is. So many more customization options, so much more flexibility and control over the design.
In this video I’m exploring Framer for the first time - using one of their templates to build a professional and fun website for a fictional makeup artist - and sharing my first impressions. If you’re a web designer who has also been curious about Framer and wondering if it’s worth your time, this is your sneak peek into what it can do.

Love the design you landed on!! As a designer and artist, I love seeing web design that adds more personality and handmade touches. This was also really helpful to see the incorporation of CSS in Squarespace. I use Wix and have come across similar things where I can't quite edit their styles the way I want, so that opened my options so wide lol
aw thanks! I made a video all about using CSS in squarespace if you're interested lol: th-cam.com/video/-zhzzEvC8GQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=JenWebb
Please make series on Design with me . Your content help a lot..
I think I’ve discovered something truly important and rare for me. Your videos are exactly what I needed. I’m following you from Italy; I’m a guy who’s come a long way, starting as a car mechanic, and for the past three years, I’ve been working as a technical draftsman/mechanical designer as an employee. However, I’ve always loved design, and my dream was to create my own racing cars. Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to afford it, as the mechanical world is extremely expensive. To turn my life around, a few months ago, I decided to move into the entirely digital field, with the dream of working remotely from home-or even better, from anywhere in the world. That’s how I stumbled upon web design. I have to say, I was blown away when I saw your videos, your journey as a freelancer, and the fact that I’ve been gathering the same tools (Figma, Notion, Squarespace, etc.) without knowing much about this profession. You’ve made me realize that I’m on the right path; you’re showing me that it’s possible, and I’ve made the right choice. You are a huge inspiration to me, and honestly, I’m in awe of your sense of aesthetics and your design style. It’s amazing, even though it’s very feminine-whereas I’m more into minimalistic and technical design. But that’s exactly why I love it; it’s bold. Keep going, you’re doing great. I’m rooting for you!
Wow I'm blown away by this! 🥹 it's amazing to hear my videos and my journey have had this kind of impact on you and others. Thank you for your kind words! and best of luck to you!!
Thanks for sharing your experience. Which No-code tool are you using to code your site?
I use Squarespace and just started with framer
@jenwebbcreates thanks for information
good stuff
I want to start making websites for my future graphic design business. I use cargo for my portfolio website. I don't want to have to pay another web design company to make websites. Is that what you do? Do you use squarespace for your portfolio and use squarespace for your websites? I want to get into this!
I use squarespace for my web design portfolio and most of my client websites are also done in squarespace. I've never used cargo, how do you like it?
Thank you for your videos and love the red/orange color you use in your videos :D It reminds me of your hair!
hehe thank you orange has been my favorite color lately 🧡
Hi Jen, I loooooveeeee your videos! It will be lovely to have a contest and create the brand identity and web design of one of your followers. I would love to see your approach and to give back to the community :)
I’m 24 and interviewed yesterday for a corporate position. I don’t have much money but I decided to take the plunge into creating my own nonprofit organization and we will be fully established hopefully soon… I don’t like to do anything that is easy and while I’m burnt out a lot and trying to do everything at once, I know it’ll be worth it in the end. I’m so happy that you chose your happiness and freedom over a paycheck! I was the same way actually… however there is a beautiful woman waiting for me who I’ve loved for a while now and I want to provide everything for her, so I will do what I must for her even if I don’t want to because at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what I want, it’s about her. ❤
You’re a gem
Will this work with procreate too?
I was also an obsessed sims fan (still am lol). I had a friend who had the sims game (console version) I would go over to her house and play it. When I got my first PC I saved up my pocket money and got the complete collection. If you ever make a second youtube channel, you should record gaming content!
aw love this! Just last year I started getting back into it and bought some expansion packs for Sims 4, since I never really got to play with them when I was younger. Thank you for the encouragement to do a gaming channel! that would be so fun 🤩
I love your notion for managing inspirations, can you please share it? 😅
Thank you!!!! Life saver. This is the first time ever hearing that you can connect with the cable... wireless was not cutting it for me lol
I know this vid is on the older side, but I just tried this method and the iPad doesn't show up in the screen mirroring menu despite both my devices being Apple products and both being updated to the latest version. If you or anyone who sees this comment can help me that'd be awesome <33
try this: in the Airplay settings on your ipad turn Airplay Receiver On, change "Allow Air Play For" to "Current User"
@@jenwebbcreates Tried it, but sadly no luck. I think it's because the iPad and the Mac aren't on the same ID. Thank you for the comment back, though! :)
but how do we hire you! this is gorgeous

DYING at the part when she said "Purging your closet is not fun without audio books or podcasts" 😂😂😂😂😂 OMG I would DIEEEEE! I think I'm going to try this cleanse lol
yeah turns out it's really tough doing chores with nothing to keep you entertained 😅 good luck if you try it!
Ahhh you just brought back many nostalgic memories with the MySpace days. Those really were the wild west days of the internet.
it really was the wild west, I miss that time
Jen you're fantastic, love you!!
Just built my site on Wix Studio and I'm already thinking about what's next. Maybe Framer! Thanks for the vid.
Love your idea of using notion to create databases of web elements that inspire you. Will be incorporating that into my workflow as well ❤
The ingenuity of every DJI Mic users to feel like holding a mic is always soo funny ! And Framer looks very promising !
😅 I could just put it on my shirt but the audio quality is better if I hold it up haha plus it weighs down my shirt and looks weird
I’ve been following your channel for a while and as a Framer fan, it’s great to see content about it, and you’re right, Framer is the most Figma-like no-code tool, thank you! 🙌
ah amazing! I really like it, I just have to get more familiar with it before I start using it in client projects. But I expect I'll be creating more content about Framer in the future!
@@jenwebbcreates Sounds great, I won't miss it if you do! 🙌
Framer looks very designer friendly, thanks for the video
This video spoke to me on so many levels! Ty for sharing your journey
ah amazing! I'm glad it resonated with you 😊
Cool seeing your process in Illustrator, Figma and Squarespace! Your design came out really nice! Love the feeling of it. Modern, yet calm and peaceful. Did she provide you with any content as part of the process? How do you like implementing websites into Squarespace?
thank you! I had some content from her old website to go off but I think I wrote most of the copy text, and then she came in and adjusted the text here and there. I like Squarespace, but I actually just tried out Framer for the first time and I think I like it better, there's more a lot more freedom.
Oh my Goooooood I just discovered you through this video and I'm so incredibly in awe of your precess and how you cam up with these brilliant creative solutions! At times while watching I was like: "WHAT?? Why isn't she more excited??? This is incrediblee" but yeah - you can tell, I loved every second of this! I will now go and explore the rest of your account :)
aww wow thank you! I'm flattered 😊
how much time did it take ? from moodboard to figma to squarespace finished product ?
well a lot of it is also waiting for the client to get back to me and also during this project both of us had long international trips so I think the project took 2 months. but actual work time, I'd estimate probably like 40-50 hours. maybe a little more
@ wow really thats a lot 😭 i hope you got paid more than 5k
@@userj-s2000 no :( I need to raise my prices lol
Amazing work!
Loved watching your web design process! Can please make a video on how you get your clients! and will you use any templates to create websites or you just jump into designing your own layouts?
I have gotten a couple clients from youtube but other than that it's been word of mouth so far! and I've been designing everything from scratch up to this point, not sure what my process will be like in the future.
I'm a website designer too and I just want to say your work is really beautiful!
Thank you so much, that means a lot! 😊
Thank you so much! As a junior designer this video is so helpful!
amazing I'm glad it was helpful! I have a couple more "design with me" videos like this on my channel and plan to do more in the future. best of luck with your design career 🤗
This was so helpful and isightful. Thanks for sharing your design process :)
of course, glad it was helpful! I have more of these 'design with me' videos on my channel and plan on making more too 😊
Would you be able to do a more detailed, slow paced tutorial maybe one around 20 minutes? I'm trying to create my own website and I like your videos I'm just having trouble understanding
hmm good idea 🤔 maybe I can do a video showing how I would go about designing my own website as a beginner with no design experience but make it more step-by-step instructional.. I'll be able to work on this in a couple months!
Hi :) You can also generate images using Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, Visual Electric or any other similar tool. I also recommend a service called Lumi ai - a large set of generated images to use commercial for free :)
This was fantastic! Organized, straight to the point and useful! Have no doubt you're a successful designer :)
Hi Jen. Been watching your videos as I start to build my own website! A great help!! Can I ask why you switched to Figma for the homepage design? Is there a benefit vs staying in Adobe?
good question! I don't really know haha I think it's just what I'm used to, I always do design mockups in figma and save illustrator for more graphics related stuff. Actually figma is a little more suited for designing mockups than illustrator and has features that help with that, like you're able to design components and styles that you can reuse, and then if you want to change something down the line you can just change it in one place. And also it's easier for collaboration with the client - they can view the designs in their web browser and comment directly on the designs. And figma also lets you organize designs into different pages, and sections within pages. But personally I think the graphic design tools are lacking in figma which is why I like to do branding exploration mostly in illustrator.
@@jenwebbcreates thanks for the reply! I'm weighing up whether to learn figma or not. In this case I'm only working on my own website and already fluent in Adobe so might make sense to stay there.....but defo intrigued by figma
@@aimeedaniels99 if you're not looking to pursue a career in design and you're just working on your own website then I definitely don't think you need to learn figma. it would be good for long term design projects especially taking on clients but not really necessary to learn a whole new program for one website. good luck!
So interesting! Thanks for sharing! @mediaartssbcc
I loved working with you to make this website come to life! It's such a dream come true to have a real brand that represents my work so well. Thank you!!
aw that's so great to hear, I'm glad you love it 🥰 I also really enjoyed collaborating with you on this project, you were truly a dream client 😊
omg loved hearing this! fellow ilovecreatives student here <3 glad I found ya! just subbed
ah amazing! 😊🫶
Omg I literally became a web developer because of neopets too.
there must be a lot of us out there
Thank you for sharing these insights and the roadmap. I am a freelance web designer and Framer developer with over a year of experience. I'm still learning new things about design and freelancing every day. I feel like the last step, "marketing yourself as a designer," is especially important. If you have any details or information about it, please let us know, as it is a consistent and practical approach and one of the most important steps to getting more clients.
the way I've been marketing myself is through this TH-cam channel! I should really step it up and post more content on social media and youtube but I just don't have time
@@jenwebbcreates That’s awesome, thank you for sharing! Marketing yourself through your TH-cam channel is such a smart move. I’ve been using LinkedIn and Twitter to market my services, and I recently joined Contra to connect with more clients.
You are a hero 🫡 I don’t need to buy a screen tablet now
Is there a reason you choose to design drafts in figma opposed to adobeXD. I did slight UX design in college and trying to grease the wheels again but they are pretty rusty still.
I never really used Adobe XD. I think figma is pretty widely used now, and I believe adobe XD is being discontinued
this is random and not related to the video at all (sorry) but do you have like a teeth whitening routine? because you literally have perfect teeth 😭
lmao thank you for the compliment, I don't whiten my teeth though I just don't drink a lot of coffee 😂 or if I do I swish with water after to prevent staining, I think that probably helps?
You're so talented, we are incredibly lucky to be working with you.
aw thank you! my next 'design with me' video will be your website 😊 I'm excited to see it come together
I love the “design with me” videos!!
Something about this video feels so put together. I LOVE it!!
