Your tutorial about the Long-tail Tubular Cast On for 1x1 Rib is absolutely fabulous! You explain each step simply & clearly. I come back to your site numerous times when I have to do this cast on. Thanks!
Much gratitude for your excellent tutorial that I was able to learn from, and knit from, with a beautiful outcome. Let me say that your pacing and your thoroughness were exactly what it took to catch on, and of the many tutorials around TH-cam on this technique, it was YOURS that turned the tide for me. I had AHA! moments with every stitch and I want to be sure that you hear the appreciation from someone who succeeded because of how you presented this technique on TH-cam no matter how long ago. Thank you!
Thank you very much. It was really daunting to cast on 120 stitches. But I followed your instruction step by step and joined stitches in the round. Your video made it easy.
Hello, Thank you so much for your quick reply. This pattern I am working has you start the Long Tail Tubular cast on, with a straight needle and then transfer it to circulates, but I am liking what you are doing, to just start it on circulars. I love the way you secure the first stitch! Thank you again for your reply and your teaching videos.
Hi Kalurah! Thanks so much for this video! After reading many of the not-so-positive reviews, I can understand why experienced knitters might them. However, I am NOT experienced and I found your video extremely valuable! The method you are teaching is very different from anything I know (which is not a lot), so it was wonderful that you repeated the steps a few times so I could practice with you without having to stop and back up the video. To further prove my inexperience, I have no idea what a selvage is in knitting. Can you please tell me? I do know what it is on a piece of fabric, if that's helpful. I'm now going to watch your video on tubular bind-off. Again, thank you for taking the time to each us!!!
Such a good technique and video! Thank you. I love tubular cast on but such a pain with provisional this is AWESOME, quick and great results. My edges are round, plump smooth and stretchy. PERFECT! THANK you for posting. I have linked this video to my ravelry projects so folks can find you. Executiveknitter
For new tryers - in general when I am starting a new technique, I will watch and try a few different times before it sinks in. Sometimes I'll practice at night sleep on it, and then review in the morning. Then I move to my project. Practice....
Thanks for a great tutorial. I'm a beginner knitter and was about to knit a mitten that requires a 1 x 1 tubular cast on. Your tutorial is great; I was able to do the first few stitches by just watching, but as I never remembered the sequence without rewinding the video and losing my grip on the strands. I just wrote down the steps as you explained and completed a really stretchy swatch. Is there a similar cast off? Can you please do a tutorial for that, please? Thanks!
Hi Anthonia! Here is my video for how to bind off the tubular 1x1 rib: th-cam.com/video/f2NRvW-n5LI/w-d-xo.html I hope you find it helpful! Thanks so much for watching. :) Kalurah
Hello, I too agree that you are a very calming in your teaching. My question is, how would you start the cast on with a knit stitch? I am making a classic knitted hat that shows the long tail tubular starts with a knit stitch. Does it really matter? Thank you so much for this video,. Look forward to your thought.
Hi Bermuda Ann, For this same cast on worked in the round, I start with a knit stitch, instead of a purl stitch. So yes, you can start with a knit stitch! Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/yE3b4Vq3sJ8/w-d-xo.html
I have always done the cast on and the first two rows with a needle one or two sizes smaller. Otherwise the edge looks a little bigger. As she said it's loose.
This is soooooooo slow that the AHA! moment never arrives. The visual should flow so that the actions make sense. I couldn't make it to the end for fear of firing my computer through a wall.
The problem with going so slow is that each step seems to have many pieces, and one can't see how they fit together. That "cat's cradle" aspect of the cast-on is even more confusing if you can't see the flow.
I had the same issues, until my pre-teen son showed me that you can change the speed of the video, on the screen, click on the sprocket symbol with HD logo in the middle, you can choose any of the speeds, and then change back when you want.
Oh. My. Gosh! You see, this is why I'm so UNinformed about technical stuff--I don't have any kids! I had NO idea you could do this!!! Please tell your son Thank You! By the way, could you ask him if there's any way we can download a video to our own computer? We live in an area that has frequent electrical outages and it would be nice to access a video that's stored on our hard drive (especially if the power goes out in the middle of a project I'm following). By the way, I'm constantly saying that kids could earn money by teaching folks like me (i.e., older) how to work technical devices! ;~)
Hi, I love the way you explain your cast on makes a different outcome than the other one , but you did not teach your way of bind off and it is not a complete tutorial without the tutorail of the bind off. What a pity|!
Hi Edna! Here is my video for binding off the 1x1 rib: th-cam.com/video/f2NRvW-n5LI/w-d-xo.html I hope you find it helpful. Thanks so much for watching my channel! Kalurah
In the double knitting rows: If you knit, then slip the purls, but in the next row, those knits ARE the purls. SO you're slipping the same cast-on stitches two times. That sounds odd, and structurally unsound. Too simplistic, too talky, too long. You are filming this, so we don't need endless description. It doesn't matter about the "pearl anchor" -- do another video about that, but get on with the subject of THIS video. Almost 6 minutes into the video, nothing had been done. When you bring the movements up closer to actual speed, I get a glimpse of the concept as a whole, not separate parts that don't make a pattern or make sense. It's a video, so if people are not up to this, they can re-watch. And seeing them flow together makes it come together in my mind.
I wish this could be played slowly for maybe 10 repetitive times instead of lots of talking then jumping from slow to fast to slow to fast agazin ...grrrr

Finally I was able to follow along to a video for this method. Thank you. I had to start and stop a lot, but it clicked!
That's great! I love hearing that, Shari. Thanks so much for commenting.

Thank you so much for this! I watched like 3 other videos that were no help at all so thank you so much !
+Sierra Rose You are very welcome! Thanks so much for leaving such a sweet comment.

The actual instructions start at 3:26....save yourself learning what it's used for since you likely already know. Just KNIT already lol!!
This is so cool! I'm just learning how to Knit!
Best video I've found for this technique! Thank you! How do I adapt this for a hat on circular needles? Knit the first double knit row onto circulars?
This is nice and explained it very well. What I don’t like is the thickness. Is there a way to do this cast on without the thickness?

Thank you. How to do a tubular cast on when the 1st stitch is a knit stitch
This was extremely helpful. Do you have written instructions anywhere? Thank you for posting it.

im trying a reverse of Judy's Magic cast off
can you do a two needle version of this? I hate casting on with my hands
Watched the video, then played the key steps about 20 times while my hands learned what was going on ^_^
Interesting. I should try this.
It makes a better edge for rib stitch than a basic longtail cast-on. I can already tell.
Oh excellent. Saved to my technique folder.
Thank you! Do I always start with a Purl st for tubular cast on?
You don't have to actually. You can start out with a knit stitch instead. All that really matters is that you still slip every other stitch. :)
Can you do a video for tubular cast on in the round?
Did you knit the sweater you are wearing?
Thanks for sharing 🌹
Can this be applied for knitting a hat in the round?
Hello,do I need to take out the tail end of the yarn, or just weave it in?
Just weave it in! :)
thank you very much .
It’s also called Italian cast on

I would greatly appreciate it if you didn't speed up, I loose the rhythm everytime you do that, can you just go slow the whole time.
I had the same issues, until my pre-teen son showed me that you can change the speed of the video, on the screen, click on the sprocket symbol with HD logo in the middle, you can choose any of the speeds, and then change back when you want.
