The Horseshoe Hill train crash in Caledon, Ont. killed seven people on September 3, 1907. It affected countless families across Ontario but it also brought some good. A group of women used the tragedy to bring Orangeville its first hospital.
In this episode of Living History, we’ll visit the site of the wreck, see the old railway roadbed, explore the health care legacy as it stands today in Orangeville, and hear how this deadly railway would claim more lives until the day it was ripped up.

That stretch of road now is so cursed. Accidents on it around that area all the time. Just in the past 3 months we know of a car that rolled, a pickup that rolled and my son in law ended up in the ditch on its side. All single vehicle accidents. And that’s just what we know of. My older brother swears he saw a man walking down the side of the road with a lantern before he disappeared right in front of his car… that was about 10 years ago. We stay off that stretch now.

It’s because of how bad drivers are in this area. I live around here, and people fly up and down that road doing well over 100. Add the speed and lack of driving skills and that’s what you get

@@jackdough8164 100% agree. When I’m doing 110 on hwy 10 and people are getting angry and swerving around me and doing 125+ there is an issue. The amount of impatient entitled drivers in and around Orangeville is shocking.

That little segway was completely irrelevant to the subject matter being discussed. Injecting modern politics/moralities (eg white guilt) into every sphere is tiresome. All I wanted to hear about was railroad history.

Warren, that is one poorly designed set of circumstances, right curves and a steep grade. It looks like flat farmland in your video, but it certainly is not.
