VHS has been big part of my life. I used to rent movies on VHS quite a lot. I still own VCR, couple of them.
I still buy VHS tapes, but mostly DVDs and blu-rays. Now I copy tapes to my computer, so I don't have to
    worry about tapes getting worse.

I forgot all about the remote being on a cord! and I forgot all about renting VCR’s, too! My Dad raised 10 children, so when something new came on the market, he pondered it and studied it, and when he came home with our first microwave, our first VCR, my first Walkman, and our first Atari, can you even imagine what a super hero he was to 10 kids???? He was such a good Daddy. Today is his birthday. First or that he has missed. He passed away last April. He’s still a super hero, though. It is a very happy memory for me!

You brought back some memories for me for sure! Our first VCR was the two part stackable....we had one of those big VCR camera that you took one of the two pieces ( like 10” x 10”) and the tape was in that part....on a shoulder strap....then bring home and watch what you filmed.....then we bought the camera with the VCR tape in it....big ol camera!! Still have both. I loved going to Blockbuster and renting movies....we lived in a college town so summers were best selection. One more you mentioned Halloween....watched that movie while babysitting😱 with my then boyfriend.....now husband of 38 years! I never watched that one twice! I can remember renting Dirty Dancing and was first time I rewound the last scene and watched over and over again.....great memories....Thank you for sharing😊kim

My husband wanted to buy a VHS machine when they were popular, but I didn't see any reason to get one. I told him, if they made a Cher work-out tape, I'd let him. (She later did do one, but only as a participant in a trainer's video!) Within months tho', we did buy one, and our first two tapes were: Miss Female Impersonator Contest (I really loved that one!), and, The Day the Earth Stood Still. ---Nowadays, I still have a VHS player, and scads of tapes that I do watch once in awhile. Some I've replaced in DVD, but some I'm leaving as is, w/o replacing into newer formats.---When I get around to having that garage sale with my Sister (hopefully this spring after all danger of winter rains are through), I'll plan on purging my inventory, to see how many takers I get!---What's up for next weeks topic?! In the early 80s, we bought an RCA ced player and a few movies at a local Ft. Worth television store called Rucker's. On Fridays we'd drive all the way across town and rent 3 or 4 for the weekend. When that player quit, we bought the stereo version. My husband wanted a laser disc instead, but we couldn't afford that one. I think we paid $250 for the ced, and when technology passed it by, we bought a bunch of discs when Rucker's closed out that dept. Still have it all in storage. It had better picture quality than beta or vhs.

The "be kind, please rewind" bit was a campaign to save the video stores money. After all, vcrs and stand-alone rewinders had a REALLY short shelf-life when having to rewind tapes on an industrial scale. The rewind function stresses the motors majorly, hence why they used to sell the stand-alone rewinders.
On resale; ALWAYS look for tapes that had content not deemed worthy for industrial transfer to later media formats. There were even some movies that didn't make the cut between Beta and VHS. THOSE are rare and valuable. The main ones I can think of that I sold over time were film noir and oddities that TCM used to occasionally show.
Also, for whatever reason.. unopened beta movies..if they're popular titles..tend to sell.
    My video story:
I was usually the responsible guy in my group of friends, the guy that DIDN'T rack up late fees and actually returned my movies so I was usually the only one that could actually rent movies and games...which became irritating..."Dude, if I pay fer uh rental, can uuh yooz yer card?"
The answer was usually, "Sure, but ya gotta buy fast food AND once the movie's over; it leaves with me!"
Needless to type, people hated me for that..hahaha.
Oh..ONE MORE..Do any of you remember the INSANE cost of having to pay for a lost rental?
My wonderful pals had many horror stories on that...the worst involved that garbage Airplane-style comedy movie "Mafia.'" My friend lost it and Blockbuster wanted $165.00 for it!!!!
Another friend of mine lost the old Nintendo game "Gradius" and a store called Video Adventures wanted over $100.00 for that!
    Anyway, great clip..inspired some memories.
