To test the fan outside the chassis, I just left the PWM wires dangling. The other two wires will run full speed at the rated voltage. If you want a lower speed, drop the voltage using a series resistor. I pulled a fan assembly with heat pipe and CPU interface plate from a computer headed to the bin. I wanted to use it to chill some charging /discharging components. I found a SP4T switch and hooked it up so the top is connected straight, second position 5 ohms, third position 10 ohms, bottom position N/C. Now I have a three speed cooler with an off position too!

How do I check my PWM fans manually? (alienware m17x r3) I have them out, they spin freely no dust or bearing noise. just laptop wont kick them on when gets hot. ty in advance
Fan is ok with usb check spning maximum speed. When put this on inside my laptop plug in cable. It doesn't work.... Plz also note that if I exit bios it spin for 2/4 sec point of laptop restart. So is it my fan problem or motherboard. I digoniest the dell also showed that cable is not ok. So what should I do now...man??

I already checked the temp of my CPU and GPU using MSI afterburner, its all running normal temps. I actually just recently cleaned my fan, when I placed it back it suddenly just keep spinning on max speed. what seems to be the problem?
Ok so im watching because im playing with a 10yo gateway laptop. got win10 0n and got a fan error. alredy knew about the fan going bad a long time ago it finaly crapped out. Tore apart anothr junk gateway i have and found i can test the fan with a cr2016 3v battery. Very simple made converting from a brushed to brushless motor easy.
You waste my time with bad advice. First you don't even know to twist 2 wires, second you don't need to twist them, 3rd you may burn the usb port, 4th this works only with 2 or 3 wire fan, not with pwm type.

Only works for DC direct fans, not PWM fans (4 wire fans)

Ok the fan motor works but what about the rpm signal if that's not working the cpu will still see an issue.

Maybe temperature sensor of cpu or gpu
