Those early critics took the synopsis of S1E8 "The Well" too seriously, it used the word "crossover", not "tie-in". In season 2, Maria Hill does mention MAN-THING in short scene.

In episode 9 May tells Tobias Ford to "Let the girl go" which is another easter egg to The Calvary or Season 2 Episode 17!!! The writing is so amazing and underrated!! I just rewatched Season 4 this week I should go back to Season 1 again. I love AOS so much!!!

Indeed, people were too hard, demanding too much (like spoiled, entitled brats) when they bitched and moaned about the movie tie-ins. I for myself loved how SHIELD was portrayed as those who do part of the clean up after alien activities, to make sure alien tech did not get into the wrong hands, which ties in to the “Item 47” one-shot short film that was on the Avengers Blu-Ray release, in which Agent Sitwell is the one going after stolen alien tech (and the whole scene at the beginning of “the Well” makes it all very realistic; because someone HAS to do it). But also I love Peter MacNicol as the unassuming Prof. Randolph/Asgardian Beserker: He is a greatly underrated actor and I would love to see him one time in full Asgardian garbs, going full Berserker mode with the staff (even if it was in a flashback... maybe one day... Are you reading this people of Disney+?... Just saying!!). All of those consequences and an Asgardian expat were more than sufficient to get the feeling that AoS and the movies were all in the same universe (and boy do I hope they keep it up after Endgame!)
On the reference to Ghost Rider, while I agree that they probably did not have that much forethought at that point in the first season, I still like to think that the dimension that Gemma peers into with that holo-projection image is the same “Hell dimension” that Ghost Rider takes his uncle to in season 4; probably the same dimension the spirit of vengeance that fills Ghost Rider comes from. That then become fun to imagine as it means that Coulson was possibly already aware of the existence of that dimension as we learn at the end of season 4 that he was familiar with Johnny Blaze, the previous Ghost Rider who passed on the power to Robbie Reyes.

In Repairs, the way they theorize the possibility of ghosts as a person trapped between worlds. It parallels basically how they explain Lucy and the Peanuts Gang is season 4. People who were trapped between dimensions.

    8:47 - Davis is such a chameleon :p
    I would add something...
    - I mean when Daisy was taking about Saint Agnes Orphanage and how nuns were treating them which was later showed on Daredevil.
    - And May tell Thobias "let the girl go" which is what Coulson said her in 2x17.

Of course you received the "much appreciated Like" from me. You totally nailed that. I'm still doing a rewatch also. I had forgotten how much fun Agents of SHIELD was, blending humor very nicely into the show. From the very first episode I loved Skye because of the witticisms and light-hearted sarcasm in her regular everyday speech. Coulson can also put a humorous spin on things. And the show itself, while serious, can still bring out the chuckles and laughs; and I had forgotten that. The tension in the last couple of seasons have choked out some of the gaiety and humor, but the MCU has made humor a more integral part of its storytelling since Guardians of the Galaxy.
Episode 7 of the 1st season is one of my favorite episodes of ALL television. GREAT story, great storytelling, and it had even some great life lessons in it that I personally took to heart. And while on such a dangerous assignment, the odd couple, Ward and Fitz, managed to make me laugh out loud several times. The series is better today than it was 1st and 2nd season, but I'm hoping they reintegrate the humor and fun it once had into the series.
When the first, mostly the second, season was airing, a lot of people were in suspense over who Skye is and if she will eventually prove to be someone in the comic book. (A lot of people ended up being wayyyy off.) Until now, though, I had always assumed that the writers of the show had tried to spice the show up by changing her character into someone with superhuman (or "inhuman") abilities. (I ended up being wayyyyy off!) A lot of features of the series, even in the second episode, seem to have been conceived after the pilot episode was written but before the 2nd episode aired. I'm a little more inclined now to think that they might have had Quake in mind for Skye even before the pilot episode was presented for approval.
Why didn't y'all tell me that Jonathan Frakes directed episode 8? I heard this for the first time yesterday, and I was like, "Wwwhhhaaattt???!!!" That episode begins with Coulson's team being the clean-up crew for all the wreckage that Thor and Malekith dealt upon London, and that was really cool because it was a direct tie-in with the MCU. In yo' face, everyone claiming AoS is independent of the MCU!

To sum up what you said season 1 was awesome and it was super underrated, some episodes were better than others but all in all awesome.

@@WhattheGeek Those writers! They are unsung heroes. I now want to know who they are. It wasn't work; they were having fun. The whole MCU is fun, but it got better, in my opinion, after Agents of SHIELD came out. They play off each other.

Been enjoying the AOS episode review. But after watching, something that most have overlooked is how they foreshadowed the betrayal of Ward. Prior to the reveal of Hydra, everyone HATED Ward because he was too much of a boy scout, but now I realize that this was intentional. In fact, May and Ward are the same characters, the only difference being how they handled their respective traumas. May had the trauma of being “the Calvary”, Ward had “the Well”. Mention was constantly being made to both of their traumas throughout the first season. May became introverted, which caused her to withdraw from her husband; Ward became extroverted, which caused him to attack his family. They were both drawn to Coulson for similar reasons: May because Fury ordered her, Ward because Garrett ordered him. They both became emotionally attached to Sky (Daisy). But what really showed how different their character arcs were going to be began in episode 1x8, when both grabbed the Berserker staff. May had learned to live with, control, and accept her trauma; Ward had only learned to hide his trauma and he allowed it to control him. This was the point of making Ward’s character so likeable at the start of season 1, while May’s character was so cold and wooden. Then, by the middle of season one, May was beginning to warm up and even began playing jokes, while they were foreshadowing a darker future for Ward, especially leading up to how dangerous he could be as a villain in episode 1x15. In the end, when Shield fell, May remained loyal to her friends, to Coulson. Ward remained loyal to Garrett and, once Garrett died, began treating Coulson and the team as he did his real family - he attacked them. Subconsciously we hated Ward because we knew he was too nice, then we came to consciously hate him because he betrayed his family (the team). That was the point from the beginning.

Oh I mentioned it on a previous video and then on the next one I have prepped I mention it. I believe being traumatized by past events does not necessarily cry villain. There are bigger Easter Eggs all the way through. For example on Episode 10 there is Daisy's statement or rather question about anyone else thinking they should join the other team? That one was hilarious then and is worthy of contemplation now, a breadcrumb but a great one at that.

Another good recap Geek. One thing I noticed in 'Repairs' that could be considered a foreshadowing of Ghost Rider is the image Jemma saw of the alternate dimension using the holotable. It could be considered an image of the Dark Dimension which is clearly associated with Ghost Rider.

I don't know the name of the episode but it has the team in Italy on the train that becomes invisible or something -or- rather that Ward and Coulson teamed up to use the Holo- table to try to find the train. With them using the Holo- table, it's a callback Easter Egg to Iron Man 3 with the Holo- city that Tony discovered a new element. Or anything with holograms that Tony's program JARVIS and FRIDAY assists Tony with. Of cause I can't rule out the Spider-Man movies in the MCU with the spider suits. One in particular in Far from Home also does the same. So Easter Eggs and more. Shuri in Black Panther with the Wakandan tech kind of did the same with the vehicle holograms.

@2:12 I've not seen the movie, but how is that a twelve monkeys reference? was 12 monkeys even a thing people referenced in 2013? The movie is a cult favorite, but not widely referenced as far as I know. And the series didn't come out until 2015... Not to mention I'm pretty sure they added that line just because Iain likes monkeys... actually, I think it might have been improv?
This video is like... squinting at shadows and being reminded of another shadow that was a similar size, shape and color.... Yes there are references to things and to make a story they use consistency. But not everything is a nod to something.

    • @WhattheGeek
      @WhattheGeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

12 Monkeys as a movie is actually a huge hit, and you have one complaint and now it is this video is blah blah blah?
And yes the movie is referenced, just like a lot of people who never watched fight club, people born in the early 90s onwards (not all of them but a lot) would not understand a "First Rule of X is you do not talk about X reference) or a ton of people even my age who never watched "The Godfather" would not understand a "Leave the X, Take the Y" reference, or a sleeping with the fishes reference, or a "keep your friends close but your enemies closer" reference, etc.

Constantine - Everything is possible, but I think Feige’s mode of thinking and doing things is to move forward, not backward, so I don’t think they would go back to Johnny Blaze; except for small cameos and tie-ins.
If they continue with Ghost Rider, in movies or TV series, it will either be continuing with Robbie Reyes (Which I would love!) or have Robbie pass it on to a third Ghost Rider other than Blaze (Third of course being a loose term as others were the Ghost Rider prior to Johnny).
