If it smokes, it's being lubricated. My C-51 and other old saws smoke like a chimney. Run them at 32:1 and they'll be happy for a long time. No mufflers mean no arrestor screens to plug off.

I found one of those on the side of the road last year. I put a $10 intake boot in it. I runs great. I use it daily cutting wood to heat my house. They sure don’t build stuff like they used to.

There's no oil to burn other than the oil you mix with the gas and the older Saw's ran 32 to 1 mix. That's a great old saw and they do smoke. Great find.

I used these old Homeliites when I was younger. In fact if it didn't say Homelite I wouldn't by it. After you put gas in the carb it startled me when the old girl lit off lol. They were hard to kill. I hope you are feeling better by now and thank you for another great video.

I bought a Home lite 240 chainsaw cheap over 20 years ago used from a plumber on a job i was working on and It still runs ....I have a new Husky now but I just fired up the old 240 and its still running , haven't started it in about 7 years . going to tune er up and keep using it here around on the ranch . thanks for the vid .....cheers

On old saws that have been sitting around for a while the usual culprits are plugged filters, rotted fuel lines, broken primer bulb, a clogged carburetor or a bad carburetor diaphragm.

I have an old blue Homelite XL that was my grandfathers. It is a beast! It`s all metal and has a manual pump bar oiler. The saw is heavy (heavy enough to just let the weight of the saw do most of the work) and has plenty of power! It`s a little loud though! Thank you for sharing your video!

Those old Homelites are great saws, I collect old vintage chainsaws and I have a few old Homelites as well as Mcculloch and Echo. All of them run, every new old saw I get I always get running, sometimes I get lucky though and don't have to do any work to them because they already run.

I feel disappointed if a new old saw I buy is a runner. Must be a running saw AFTER I fix it. That makes me feel good.
I have that exact saw, my Dad bought it new years ago. I did have to replace the rubber intake boot , but that's all it's ever needed, and it's been used a lot! I also have Dad's Craftsman 16hp Suburban riding mower he bought new around 1970ish, like the Homelite saw, it still runs as new. Those pieces of equipment are precious to me today, every time I use them, I think of Dad.

Similar acquisition, but the rubber boot between the carb and cylinder had a crack in it sucking air. Still runs fine to this day. I always run the mixture on the rich side loving the smoke

I found an old Homelite chain saw like you as well. It was on the curb to be taken by the trash. I took it home and had to buy a new trigger and clean the carb. This was over 20 years ago and it mostly plastic so yours is well over a decade old. I still have it and it still works. Its a really small unit though.

The 330 and 360 were fairly modernized saws in the Homelite line. They were, like most Homelites up to the job they were intended for in their respective class. Good find.

What a cool old saw! I would definitely hang on to that one. As far as using it, that’s a completely different story. The metal housing will be heavier causing the operator to fatigue more quickly. Also, most modern equipment calls for a 50:1 gas to oil ratio or possibly a 40:1 ratio. If I had equipment calling for both ratios, I would run everything at 40:1 and not think much of it. A lot of the older equipment called for 32:1 or even more oil in the mix. I wouldn’t be comfortable running that much oil in a machine requiring 50:1, nor would I run 50:1 in it. This means 2 different fuel supplies. An old saw like that probably wouldn’t see much use due to higher fuel costs, weight, and lack of parts availability. Still, I would love to have it!
I've got my grandfather's old saw. It's an old dolmar, looks to be close to 100cc. It's the best quality saw I've ever worked on

I have a new MS250 saw which put away, I enjoy using my handed down old saws.
I use my Super XL12 and the 330 combo for logging with no problems. They dont seem heavy as alot of complaints are about weight of the saw which I don't mind and I love.😁👍

Hard to believe someone threw that perfect saw away. Now people online can believe me when I say these Homelite 54cc saws will rip your arm off if you don't have it pinned steady and ready for some recoil. Yesterday I got A free homlite xl and the guy said you can have it because I won’t be able to get it running I put gas in it and it fired right up and sits there and idles

with vintage saws first dump old fuel out pour fresh fuel and start there will be a good chance it will fire right up before you decide to tear into the carb first

I have a question you may be able to answer. When using an Oregon In-Line spark tester on an older Poulan Chain Saw I can see a flash indicating that the coil is good. However I do not see a spark at the plug. No spark at the plug with out the inline tester. I spray starter fluid into the cylinder or carb. No start.Is it possible to have a spark to work the in line spark tester but not a spark plug? I have replaced the spark plug three times I have rebuilt the carb and checked compression. 125psi. Thanks for any assistance.
What spark plugs have you tried using? And oem part or equivalent? The tester just needs to be grounded by the spark plug in the engine. You can also run an engine with the tester still in line . It just flashes with the plug. What the gap on the plug?
@@HomeGaragechannel Found the problem. Wire from the kill switch to the coil was loose. Cleaned spade conectors and now have a strong and consistent spark. Thank you for your reply. I really enjoy your videos. Professional quality.

Most of these old 330s have a cracked intake boot. A little hard to change but doable.

It may smoke due to too rich of an oil mix. how's the compression when you pull on it is the question.

Maybe it was the fresh gas you put in it. I am a little surprised the metering diaphragm did not need changing. It looked a little stretched.

My Homelite 330 smoked like that to and the problem end up being in the oil tank, both the duckbill and the filter? had come of the hoses, it did not lube the chain either and would pump the oil tank empty in 5 minutes.

I love them old homelite's got two 150 Homelite chainsaw and a 240 Homelite I love them Both.

I started out with Homelite saws and would just as soon have one as a Stihl or Husky. They are like a Briggs flathead; they just run. And a Homelite smokes a bunch, just their nature. And like a pal said if a saw don't smoke it's not getting enough oil. I used regular Homelite oil in the can and never had a problem and had them from an XL-2 up to an 1150. Great saws. Not as smooth or fast as a new one but if you're not in a rush, they'll cut firewood like the newer ones. Maybe not quite as much but wood is wood. Good fix and BLESSINGS!

That would've been someone whose like my uncle who threw it out after putting too much oil in it after not getting that a 2 stroke engine will do that if a person does that.
He did the same thing with his 7 year old John Deere lawnmower, he gave it to my grandfather in 2017 after it got hard to crank over then the battery finally died this year.
He bought the John Deere lawnmower in 2010 to replace another ride on lawnmower after he thought it was just bad spark plugs that caused that mower not to start.
He fitted new spark plugs but my grandfather & I diagnosed it as being a bad coil,it was one which was a single twin spark coil which failed,so my uncle gave him that mower.
I'm pretty sure my grandfather fixed it up & sold it !

I have a 1980's Homelite that's been a beast. I have cut many a cord of wood, even helped clear our road of fallen trees due to a hurricane.
I plan on firing up soon. My question is it has a 16:1 gas oil mixture. can I do a 40:1 or 50:1 ratio mix?. Premium gas with a good quality two stoke oil. Thanks

Or poulan pro 4218. Bought both on line the wild thing needs fuel lines and primer saw is like new old stock the poulan pro is new 2019 model never used. Wild thing i paid 20.00 the pro i paid 100.00. I know neither is great just to good to pass probably just keeping one.

I own a Homelite 330 that looks like new. The reason I stopped using it was because it was difficult or impossible to restart when it had been used for a few minutes. Unfortunately, my skills are limited and there aren't any shops where I live that want to work on Homelites.

Try taking the recoil cover that has the rope on it, off, and use compressed air to blow out all the sawdust and gunk out of the cooling fins. Also around the backside of the crankcase, between it, and the gas tank. They can really plug up, causing overheating and make the gas boil when hot. Should fix your problem!
The reason for the smoke is because it’s a 2 cycle engine. NOT THE PISTON RINGS. It’s normal for old saws. You want is to smoke it signals it is getting proper lubrication. That saw Runs on a 32:1 fuel mixture. 2 cycles have to burn off all the oil they use, if you take care of that saw it will take care of you for many years.

I have a Homelite 330 chainsaw that looks identical to this one except that the model # is 10649. I am trying to figure out the correct gas/oil mixture before I try to get it started. Web searches have failed to locate an owner's manual for it and there is information out there that suggests that the mixture could be anywhere from 16:1 to 50:1. Any ideas? Unfortunately not. Best to either buy a parts saw or get a new saw.
I have a 330 that I'm looking to sell. It does fire on fuel dripped down the intake but won't run. I'll check the carb diaphragm and fuel lines. Let me know if you're interested in buying it. It doesn't have any bar and chain but us in pretty good shape cosmetically

Anyone remember the Homelite XL? I still have and use my Pioneer 45 to 50 year old Chainsaw! Don’t scrimp on the oil content in the mix. Smoking is good after all!!!!!

Well you really don't need to mix it that rich if you use high quality full synthetic oil such as Amsoil Dominator or Evinrude xd100
I run all my equipment at 40 to 1 I use Evinrude oil
Evinrude xd100 is made Buy BRP also known as Ski-Doo

Hmmmm.....so the previous owner thoroughly cleaned everything before leaving it at the curb?
it was actually in really good shape when I picked it up but I cleaned it before doing the video.
I have one of those in my garage I was working on it for awhile and when I first got it out the piston was stuck like my dads stihl so I got that free and the carb was actually really clean and the diaphragms were good but somehow the spark plug boot got cut off and the spark plug was missing so I put on in to check for compression and it didn't have much so I took the muffler off and man them rings were destroyed along with the top of the piston and also I told a guy I would fix his chainsaw. I'm only 10. But I did in fact get 4 machines running again one of my dads old homelites which he used for cutting stone my grandpas old home lite super which he put a chain driven shaft on my grandpas old mculloch weed water and now my dads stihl chainsaw which I mentioned wouldn't start in another video of yours

Here in the UK you can't legally sell a chainsaw that has no chainbrake mechanism. Good job on getting it running though 👍 those small 2 strokes can be very picky and not run 🙄😊

Smoke may be just to rich of a fuel mix or the carburetor may need a little ajusting. Nice saw though those old home lites are starting to become a collector item these days.

i don't remember if it was super clean when i got it but this is when I wasn't cleaning them before filming so it must have been clean before i got it.
When tackling smaler screws put a small magnet on screwdrivet shaft.this magnitizes your tool.eadier to deal with tiny screws.

I have run old Homelite mcculloch's and all kinds of saws like that it should have more compression than that you should be able to hold it by its rope and let go of the saw and it'll stand on its rope if the engine was in good condition

My guess is the owner . Is not mechanically inclined. John Deere AND a chainsaw? He called a shop and they quoted a crazy price sight unseen. Lots of those old homelite xl and mini macs need EVERYTHING removed to access the carb. Fuel tank, oil tank, engine -cylinder etc. Its a royal pain in the ass! Some shops will just refuse them alltogether. The best part about that saw is that it spent the majority of its working life in a "EPA FREE" enviroment and ethanol free. Ill bet the piston thru the exhaust port looks like it came feom the factory. Get well and continue setting the bar high. Great job. (I hate you) 😏 JK

The smoke is 100% normal. It's a 2 cycle. 2 cycle fuel has oil in it. Oil smokes when burnt.

Try tip it over I guess it may have some air leak problem or carburetor needs adjustment by the sound after you let off throttle it kind want to rev up a bit

Is the gas you put in that Homelite chainsaw 40:1 because most old machines like that need more oil?
I do believe the fuel I used when testing it was 40:1, but I didn't use it that way. Yes these older saws wanted

Get a new spark plug or clean and gap the one you have than run it for a little and the smoke I might clear up.

The owner probably just wanted a newer saw -- looks like that Homelite has a manual chain oiler.
I haven't tried cutting anything yet but I think it an automatic oiler. If you want a manual oiler watch the next video. The next one is even older.
It's an automatic oiler. I have one. The black thing next to the carb is the oiler.

Don’t think it’s because of rings on a 2 stroke. Older ones smoked a lot more than modern saws in part due to the oil/fuel mix they ran. Bad rings it wouldn’t have that good compression.
It’s an older 2 stroke , they smoke .
Home Garage there is no crankcase , so oil cannot pass the rings into the combustion chamber . Check the pressure with a gauge that will tell you if the rings are worn .

easy, they want you to buy one from their show room instead. Its an old saw and they don't want to work on them either.
@@HomeGaragechannel I know it only needs an Ignition module and yet they won't even order one for me to replace. I can find them online now, but not several years ago when I needed the saw. I mean fuck, I only used it ONE season, (from new) and it died the next time I needed it.Ran for about 35 to 45 seconds perfectly and then just said blah... Done.

Outstanding video. It was "smoking"? Well, yeah it runs the gutenrich 16:1 fuel. It's from the Reagan era. And it might need a new tensioner that could be difficult to obtain. Looking forward to seeing you tinker with the John Deere. Get well soon, sir.

Why go through all this why not just put fuel in the tank and see if it ran then go through all the work ????? just does not make sense what you did If it aint broken don't try to fix it

you're absolutely right you can if you want to. I just chose not to.
Now if only there was a fix for that shitty new style gas can in the video. I hate those damn things. They don't like to pour fuel and the cheap valves love to break. I have three small cans of the old style that just pour fuel like they should I very carefully kep in good condition so I don't have to buy one of the new ones again.
I understand how you feel. I miss the old cans too.
Them carb bolts are 5/16ths or 8mm your cringing me with that damn screw driver attempt.

330 BACKFIRES and the recoil VERY WEAK& SMALL. airfilter TINY, NO PROPER OIL PUMP just non adjustable vacumm set up, cover over carb WARPS letting sawdust in, ALL INTAKE BOOTS SPLIT causing overheating, PAINT rubs off as no primer in factory
it IS NOT REALLY WELL BUILT. it has a VERY WEAK plastic recoil that breaks and the engine has a habit of BACKFIRING when pulling cord. VERY NAFF pulse oiler instead of mechanical pump. FLOODS EASY. air filter TINY, not much power , sawdust gets in under choke cover, INTAKE BOOT SPLITS and everything TOO THIN. also NO CHAIN BRAKE and the paint is ONE LAYER of colour onto bare metal and rubs off.
