I know. I've been watchign a few episodes of Doctor Who, and I think it comes down to the time period and the writers consistancy. When it comes to average Humans with the 9th Doctor they are a huge threat, one Dalek gave some soldiers a hard time and was slaughtering them, only stopped with the DOctor's comanion convinced it to be good, but it had to commit suicide. Meanwhile at times in the modern eras they could still be pretty comedic and destroyed easily, but in classic Doctor Who they're mostly just an adorable joke. They're desighn is so cute like Battle Droids from Star Wars I just feel so bad for them and ust want to hug them, but then I remember despite the super adorable and comedic look to them they have a space laser that can kill any Human in 1 shot and they are absolutly evil unless speciel circumstances occur, like Rusty was only able to be "good" because he had damaged circutry that prevented him from feeling how Daleks do, after it was damaged the radiation from it effected him and allowed him to see how bad the Daleks were, but rather then simply want to be actually friendly and peaceful he began developing a desire to eradicate all Daleks, and nothing could change that desire of his, even when the closest to "good" a Dalek can get he still wanted to take some path of destruction.
If it's of any consolation, I thought he was talking about the master as well. However, I still think it's funny how he was sitting inside a Dalek and mocking it. One if the best moments. Sadly, I'm too young to have been able to watch the original series. Doesn't mean I can't look it up, though! Allons-y!
Voltaic Fire absolutely. The spaceships and their endless ranks of invasion forces are impressive in the revival. The Daleks were always kind of a joke-but it was a good joke because it mocked the overweening and ridiculous ego that lives in every Fascist.

Daleks scared the crap out of me as a child but my nightmares were always consoled by the simple fact that they could not get up stairs. Was gutted when the modern series decided they could levitate.
@@crazinventorirl it actually happened with the sixth doctor in Revelation of the Daleks. There's a scene where a Dalek levitates and exterminates the employees of Tranquil Repose, but it's shot very poorly. EDIT: It's made more clear in the updated CGI for the stories. Also, Davros levitates.
To be honest the new Daleks are way better They can fly, and now you can't grab one and chuck it out the window. Their exterminate sounds better nowadays than back in the 60s

Actually you're all mostly wrong... My best buddy has a *real* (BBC Props Dept) Dalek. Though the design and materials changed through the life of the series... I can confirm (as I've sat in it...) that some were constructed with a plywood armature (frame), with alumin-I-um paneling as a casing. The hemispherical 'bumps' are ball-cock floats sawn in half. The gun and 'manipulator' are fashioned from broomstick handle doweling, with one arm ending in either a plywood 'pincer', or rubber plumbers plunger. The Dalek was constructed in three main sections. The base, mid-face section and the rotating dome head. The mid-face section would either be hinged or sit on locator keys in the base, so that easy (ish) access was made by the 'actor'. Fibreglass and resin are used extensively. On the base are four or five trolley caster wheels. There is a small bench inside, which the 'actor' sits upon. Propulsion is enabled by foot-pedaling the casing in the desired direction. This was not often easily achieved as sight was somewhat impeded by the mesh grill of the layered Dalek 'face'. The rotating head section dome, was achieved by use of a 'Lazy Suzy' bearing beneath the dome pan and was rotated by the 'actor' from within. The 'eye stalk' was likewise manipulated. The beacon-like 'ear annunciators' were originally car direction indicator lenses (first generation), later lenses were from roadworks' beacons. The whole conveyance was quite heavy and the 'actors' often got cramp or bruised knees. They were also difficult to stop on occasions. I remember when I showed ‘Dalek Invasion 2150’ to my son when he was four and he became obsessed with them....all was well until one day I was called into the Primary School by his teacher to have a chat about some disturbing artwork he had drawn that day. I was shown the drawing and it was a great picture of The Doctor and his female assistant surrounded by a dozen Daleks....unfortunately my son’s renditions of the Daleks looked at best like pepper pots and at worst like……well I am sure you can picture the scene…. Actually later in that scene the Doctor says “No arm in trying.” Also when Davros is arrested the Doctor makes to shake Davros’ hand and Davros moves to reciprocate. Terry Malloy also makes a frustrated expression (like Davros is thinking ‘darn it!’) it’s a subtle and superb moment, so slick it looks like it’s spur of the moment.

To be honest, I find the idea that Davros actually went to shake the Doctor's hand in the first place hilarious, with or without his hand!

I particularly like the stupid scene where Davison pushes the Dalek out of the loading bay in the warehouse. - Daleks, extremely hard to kill normally, immune/highly resistant to all sorts of weapons. But make it fall 20 feet onto a road and it explodes into a thousand pieces lol

I watched Doctor Who from the first episode in November 1963. It was an instant hit, and the BBC had to repeat the first episode a week later, before broadcasting the second episode, because of the requests from people who had missed it. The Beeb had never repeated a science fiction drama before that. To a child, the Daleks were the scariest dustbins [trashcans] ever invented. When the Daleks first appeared, on a Saturday night, during the second or third season, all of the kids in our local school were going around the playground on Monday morning with one eye shut, and arms extended, repeating 'Ex-Ter_Mi-Nate! in freaky voices. The school teachers hadn't a clue about what was going on. But at least we had learned a new word. The craze went on for months. The other really scary villains in early Who stories were the Cybermen. Somehow they were much more frightening than the later Cybermen. Next up were the Silurians; another recurrent theme. There were also a few other early robotic enemies, such as the Krotons and the Jumblies, but the Jumblies in particular were a joke in comparison to the Daleks. One big thing was that there was never any blood and gore. Kids don't need to be shocked by seeing it; a good story leaves all of that up to the imagination. That art is mostly lost nowadays. Daleks evaporated people, and Cybermen turned them into robots. That's where the scriptwriters exercised a great deal of skill, much of which is lost to modern writers and producers. Modern Doctor Who stories are rubbish, despite the much flashier sets, and the sexual content detracts from good storytelling with a moral to it. Why isn't the Doctor a paragon of goodness, who never resorts to needless violence, whilst rescuing the Earth from evil; something wholesome for youngsters to look up to and emulate? What's wrong with 'keeping it clean'? All that is happening nowadays is that children are being taught to accept and copy violence. And then we wonder why it's becoming much more difficult to bring up our offspring as decent human beings who add to society, rather than destroying it. After more than 60 years of the series' history, I've found the last few years of tales to be not worth watching. And that's sad. I'll watch the surviving classic stories, wobbly sets and all, over and again, and enjoy both the tales and the skills of the characters. But today's stories are one-shot ponies, at best. They're more likely to be turned off part way through an episode.

Dalek Invasion 2150 Is a classic! I remember watching it like 50 times when I was younger. I can still quote most of it lol.

Actually later in that scene the Doctor says “No arm in trying.” Also when Davros is arrested the Doctor makes to shake Davros’ hand and Davros moves to reciprocate. Terry Malloy also makes a frustrated expression (like Davros is thinking ‘darn it!’) it’s a subtle and superb moment, so slick it looks like it’s spur of the moment.

To be honest, I find the idea that Davros actually went to shake the Doctor's hand in the first place hilarious, with or without his hand!

I watched Doctor Who from the first episode in November 1963. It was an instant hit, and the BBC had to repeat the first episode a week later, before broadcasting the second episode, because of the requests from people who had missed it. The Beeb had never repeated a science fiction drama before that.
To a child, the Daleks were the scariest dustbins [trashcans] ever invented. When the Daleks first appeared, on a Saturday night, during the second or third season, all of the kids in our local school were going around the playground on Monday morning with one eye shut, and arms extended, repeating 'Ex-Ter_Mi-Nate! in freaky voices. The school teachers hadn't a clue about what was going on. But at least we had learned a new word. The craze went on for months.
The other really scary villains in early Who stories were the Cybermen. Somehow they were much more frightening than the later Cybermen. Next up were the Silurians; another recurrent theme. There were also a few other early robotic enemies, such as the Krotons and the Jumblies, but the Jumblies in particular were a joke in comparison to the Daleks.
One big thing was that there was never any blood and gore. Kids don't need to be shocked by seeing it; a good story leaves all of that up to the imagination. That art is mostly lost nowadays. Daleks evaporated people, and Cybermen turned them into robots. That's where the scriptwriters exercised a great deal of skill, much of which is lost to modern writers and producers.
Modern Doctor Who stories are rubbish, despite the much flashier sets, and the sexual content detracts from good storytelling with a moral to it. Why isn't the Doctor a paragon of goodness, who never resorts to needless violence, whilst rescuing the Earth from evil; something wholesome for youngsters to look up to and emulate? What's wrong with 'keeping it clean'? All that is happening nowadays is that children are being taught to accept and copy violence. And then we wonder why it's becoming much more difficult to bring up our offspring as decent human beings who add to society, rather than destroying it.
After more than 60 years of the series' history, I've found the last few years of tales to be not worth watching. And that's sad. I'll watch the surviving classic stories, wobbly sets and all, over and again, and enjoy both the tales and the skills of the characters. But today's stories are one-shot ponies, at best. They're more likely to be turned off part way through an episode.
