Here in Australia, we have a unique and special situation, where over 300 species of Birds, marsupials, mammals and reptiles need tree hollows to survive. And competition for tree hollows is intense, since most trees keep on being chopped down. Any animal that can't find a safe hollow, is eaten by cats, foxes, owls, or any other predator. SO, Man-made nesting boxes are going to be the future of saving Australian species from extinction, and regular people watching videos of how to do it, is going to be crucial :)

I have a bird box a the back of my garden and when I first got it the robins nested In it. Now, whenever my mum goes out to do any gardening, one of the baby robins(Who is all grown up now) will go up to her and look at her and she will get up and get some meal worms for him. My dad has recently bought a bird box but it is three boxes in one, of the hole variety, I was wondering if it was the best idea or not and weather I should put it up

Hi - it sounds like it could be a Sparrow Terrace, if this is the case, then that's fine as they nest in colonies.

    Bill
I am buying a bird box of the hole entrance variety, fitted with an internal camera.
I intend to position it facing south about 10 foot high in a tree. There is a birdfeeder about ten feet away. Do you have any comments on its positioning?
    Thanks

Hi Frank - nestboxes should always be sited between north and east, never in strong sunlight and out of prevailing winds if possible.

can i paint a nest box with water based preservative or not? Even the RSPB on the same page disagree with themselves (not a forum page either).

Hi Thomas, we would recommend a water-based paint - avoid lead-based.

I have had a bird box up for 3 years now. And the sparrows decided to nest in the really spiky juniper tree not 4 feet away. And another juniper tree with sparrows in the bottom and collared doves in the top.
But all have fledged now. I seen the sparrows come crashing to the ground a few weeks ago. Mum rounded them up into a corner, flew around the garden collecting bugs off my vegs :) and led them back into the tree. Not seen them since :(
I still cant see the nest because of the incredibly spiky needles. That tree hates me. Damn things kills. Imagine a thousands hypodermic needles been thrown at your bare skin.

Strange how birds can decide not to use a ready made nest box. At least you tried. Hey, here's a thought: have you cleaned inside the nest box? Is it full of nasties? Worth a look...

yes i have looked inside and its like new. Nothing at all inside it.
I dont mind. I put up 1 nest box on an ivy covered fence and got 3 nests in 2 trees instead. I suppose it would be different if the trees weren't there.
      Always next year.
I might take the front off and see if another species would like a room with a view of my veg patch. Eat all the bugs, raspberries and a mixture of bird feed they want. Swim in the pond. Laze in the birdbath. What a life.

Hi Bill can I use treated timber

    • @HaithsBirdFoodRecipes

Hi Martin, we would always recommend using timber that has been treated with water-based paint. Avoid anything lead-based.

Also dont cover them in wood preservative .. give your new nest box the "lived in" look by rubbing in a couple of handfuls of damp earth into the wood... eco and just how Mother nature intended.
