  • A very informal comparison of three basses I have lying around, my Flip Nasty 90's Fender Jazz Bass as a baseline vs two different "Beatle basses": an Epiphone Viola Bass and a vintage hollow-body MIJ Crestwood.
    1. MIM Fender Jazz Bass (1:44)
    2. Epiphone Viola Bass (3:43)
    3. Crestwood Vintage Beatle Bass (5:14)
For each, I play the same figure on the bridge PU, both PU, Neck PU, and Bridge palm-muted (a few bars of the bassline from my song, "Make Still Your Wings"). Played through a Mark Bass amp as unaffected as possible.

My Brother had a Univox Violin shaped Beatle Bass. Pretty nice. Eko made one as well.

I've seen & played a Univox, and I agree --it's another nice one. Haven't come across an Eko yet.

Years ago I had a Kingston Beatle bass that was nice. Wish I still had it.

    Crestwood. Hands down.

Crestwood sounds great, but the Epiphone you can get used for like $250 Canadian so it wins on price, and frankly still sounds good.

I don't disagree. The Epiphone is a great affordable option, and I love playing it --it's still my #1.

I have a Crestwood Jazz Bass. It is by far the nicest Jbass I own and I have it if nice JBass's. Never heard of Crestwood until I bought this and now seeing this video. Thanks for sharing. Crestwood is apparently very rare. Your Crestwood sounds best in this comparison.

Have you got a link to any samples of your bass? I'm very curious now...

I think you'd really like flatwound strings. I like Viola the best.

sounds like all three have round wound strings .... try flat wound strings for that true 60s thump without the scratching

I'm coming around to this point of view

The Epiphone sounds 100000x better with flat wounds

I think you're almost certainly right. I only recently tested out flatwounds on my 5-string Jazz Bass, and were it not for sheer laziness, I probably would've made the switch already. I've also come around to half-rounds on my hollowbody 6-string, which seemed initially like sacrilege, but again, may now have me hooked. Good call.

@@CodyWeathers Yeah man it makes such a difference! I've never tried half rounds, might have to check those out. The viola has been my primary bass for years.
