My first XS650SF that I put 100,000 miles on used to start great in the cold weather. Ten degrees and she'd start usually on the first kick. I'd ride 45 miles to motorcycle school and work at the Honda Suzuki shop.

Yeah I like riding in the colder weather when I was younger but not so much nowadays. Thanks for watching you be safe out there ,cheers Miyagi

Mr miyagi I've been using a wide band O2 sensor to read my air fuel ratio after it's burned to help me with tuning. I currently have a 83xs 650 I'm running two vm34 carburetors and a relatively wide Open exhaust with baffles in the end. And was having a very hard time tuning the bike. Once I set up the wideband O2 sensor and mind you it's only temporary it was telling me that I was running very lean and that's why I kept on installing out. So I went from an 11.5 pilot jet to a 17.5 and it was still running very lean I decided to go up to a 22.5 and it's running perfect right now. My main jet was a 185 and the Wide band told me that at wide open throttle I was extremely rich so I went down to a 175 and it was still rich went down to a 170 and seems to be perfect. All this in the matter of an hour with this particular tool.
There's another TH-camr on here it does a very good job of explaining how carburetors work and actually sells these wideband O2 sensors and demonstrates it in his video he goes by rolling wrench check him out. He has a couple videos on carp tuning.

I do it the old school way, I read the spark plug .How it looks when it's black or gray as for jetting always I go a little rick on the intermediate and light on the main when I first start the bike because most of the running is on your intermediate. But I'm old school I've been tuning bikes for years. CO2 sensors are okay but takes a lot more equipment and most guys out there don't have equipment or the ability to do it. It's nice you figured it out but like I said it's not going to work for everybody. Thanks for your input.

@@outlaw86custom yes I have tried the old school method of reading the plugs very time consuming also still learning tuning. The whole gauge and oxygen sensor is less than 200 bucks and it can be used on multiple different bikes as a tool.
But thank you for what you do showing the ins and outs of these bikes it's very helpful I'm just bringing to light the New age technology that people with zero tuning experience could you use to make it so they don't pull out their hair.

Hi Sir 1st thank you for all of the AWESOME info and your wealth of knowledge on the XS 650s. Could you do a video of reasons an XS 650 could be running hot?

I heard you say you were a Air Force load master veteran. I worked B-52H models at Barksdale. I remember my recruiter calling me and telling me to pack my bags I was leaving that night for basic and then I would start training to be a load master on a 130..lol
I should have done it...now I'm stuck here looking at my neighbor all day...

Being a load Master for all those years sometimes I just think myself as a flight Stewart as we did a lot of VIP runs with the high rank I like it Vietnam a lot better less bullshit.

@@outlaw86custom I reckon there is a flip side to that "less bullshit" during Vietnam. A C-130's ceiling height isn't that high!! Lol
I wonder alot how it would have been as a load master. I flew a C-5 and a C-17 once on a deployment to England. It's amazing how they get off the ground. I remember being all excited that I was going to England and I just knew I was going to find all the good buys on the old Triumphs and BSA's. Not so, there wasn't any over there! They are all over here!

So, if I have a '80 with factory electronic ignition and I want to go to a PMA, does that mean I have to use the electronic ignition module that triggers off the cam, just as if I had a '79 or earlier model that I'm upgrading to electronic ignition? That part wasn't clear in the video.
Also, again if I have an '80 model and I want to go to BS38s, can I just buy the carb mounts for a '79 and earlier, and maybe even swap in a air box joint from the '79? It can't be that easy, can it?

    • @outlaw86custom
      @outlaw86custom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If you go with the PMA upgrade you will have to run the cam operated style ignition fire which could be either points or electronic ignition. As running the bs38 you will have to change the manifolds and for the air box you may get away with using the old stock air cleaner it may have to be to
open a bit for the intake. I have not tried it let me know how it works out.

I've gotten away with running pods on 650 Yamahas when didn't wanna carburate because there wasn't as much restriction as a factory air cleaner, I'd cover the mouth of the carbs with panty hose and it help alot. Sometimes is dont need anything and works fine but sometimes the carbs need a little restriction to make it run better.

Sometimes it depends on altitude and humidity on how they run.

A great resource for these bikes is xs650.com great forum with VERY knowledgeable members. If it can be done to an xs650 it's been done there for sure. This channel is also a great resource. It's just that he doesn't have time to go into all the details.

carbs will never plug if you stop using ethanol gas you can buy ethanol free gas harder to find but worth it for carb bikes what area are you in

Or you just drain the carburetor bowls if bike is setting over the winter or for long time storage.
