I've never heard John singing "Chameleon," my favorite Petra song. He did extremely well! Both John and Greg had unique styles, but both are amazing talents! I really don't get bogged down in the debate, because both are great!
It's especially cool if you hear John's story prior to joining the band...he got saved and was working a construction job that was an hour drive each way. Had two Petra albums on tape and would listen to one on the way to work and one on the way home. So he definitely knew these songs really well.
Man oh man, I just got an early Christmas present. I've never seen this concert with John singing all Greg X Volz songs. I'd heard about this specific concert. I'd seen him sing "It is finished" before here in Australia for the "This means war" concert, but not all these oldies for a whole concert. Thanks so much for the upload. John has done so well with pretty much all songs covered in this concert. Both he and Greg had such a fantastic range. Thanks to john for keeping close to the original songs and not trying to change them.
Wow this is epic I love Petra. And John Schlitt fit perfect in the the band Petra. Praise the Lord for Bob Hartman finding John as Lead singer or I would have never been a huge Petra fan. Way to go
I became a Petra fan about 1986. My brother let me borrow his "Never Say Die" tape and I loved it. It's cool to listen to John Schlitt sing all the Greg Volz favorites here.
John is absolutely astounding! Both he and Greg are/ were great live performers. Thank God Bob Hartman found him, & found the perfect style & direction, instead of trying to pound a "square peg into a round hole". Not that John couldn't have adjusted, he showed early on he was quite capable. Petra (IMHO) set the standard for CCM & I cannot say whether it was with John or Greg, that I truly ever saw a sub-par show. Whether a free concert or a big arena show, (All the times I saw them), it was always a full setlist and 100% effort by every member of that band.
Arguably Petra with their best lineup. John Schlitt, Bob Hartman, John Lawry, Mark Kelly & Louie Weaver. I'm a huge Greg Voltz fan, but this is really cool.
Got to see Greg on the "Beat the System" tour and later as a solo artist. I saw John with Petra during "Beyond Belief" and "Unseen Power". I love Petra!
This is a really great view into the development of the band.. Most of the arraignments are still from "Captured".. Its great to see J.S before Back to the Street!!. This is kind of "Captured in Time and Schlitt"!!.. Thanks for posting this concert!!!!
I'll admit I was one of the naysayers that said "Petra couldn't work without Greg Volz" and then some months after this concert, they came to the Ohio State Fair in the summer of '86 and when John came out and sang "Chameleon" as the first number and onwards, I knew Petra was going to be around for awhile. I soon bought "Back to the Street" and played it til it wore out.
What a coincidence! I was at that same concert and still have the pictures I took. I just wish that I had a zoom lens back then! But I'm with you...Greg and John are both great singers and each of them elevated the band to a higher level.
I said the same thing, and my twin brother said, "just wait, and you'll see." I'm never going to tell him how right he was. I really don't want to hear him say I told you so. We were 14 at the time John came in.
Really awesome to hear John singing these songs! Personally, my favorite Petra is all with John, but I ADORE the music Greg put out when he went solo, so it's all a massive win in my eyes!
I loved this! I didn't know about the band until 1987 when This Means War came out. The album blew me away!! It was hard to imagine that Petra ever had a different lead singer than John Schlitt!! A friend gave me a bunch of record albums of Petra's earlier years with Greg X Volz...and he was awesome too! I guess I worked my way backwards through their music history. Both lead singers are awesome and I thank God for them... Bob Hartman is my favorite songwriter...ever...and he kept this all together by the grace of God!!
Me too, it was not till recent years I really got into the old Petra with Greg's voice but This means war was the album that got me hooked to Petra. John and his voice was the face of Petra for me but Greg's voice is great too!

It was very smart starting off with Chameleon to show Schlitt had the range to hit those notes at the beginning. Good stuff... Greg & John are both enormous talents and easily some of the best vocalists in music during their prime.
This showed up on my recommended, and I’m glad it did! I first saw Petra on the This Means War tour and worked backward to discover the music they put out prior. Fell in love with them and have seen them 20 + times. Great songs never get old
John singing “Chameleon” completely blew me away! I am a millennial, so I grew up on John Schlitt’s Petra (particularly his Petra Praise album). I am a bit partial to him for nostalgic reasons, but I still love Greg and classic Petra. Seeing both eras combined like this is super cool!!

David Maggs all I was trying to do was appreciate great music and acknowledge the fond memories I have of seeing Petra live. I’m not trying to get into a theological argument. To answer your question.......I no longer believe in a god because I have read the Bible many times and honestly sought after the lord in prayer and fasting. I saw believers of many faiths who were just as passionate as I was and had to stop and ask myself....”how do I know I have the correct faith?” I asked the lord. For years. “Please God.....show me the way.......I don’t want to get to heaven and be shown that I was only 70% correct.” I wanted to please the father. Then, I completely ignored Christian music and the Lord for a number of years, but when The Lord brought me back, I began to see what amazing music Petra had been making for SO long. Lyrically, song writing, and musicianship were absolutely top notch. Thank you for sharing this.
I have always appreciated the talents of John Schiltt and Greg Volz. John did an excellent job performing music written for Greg Volz voice. I know their voices are distinct. I believe the songs well performed in John Schlitt's key, which means that the band performed the Greg Volz songs, not in Greg's key, but performed in the key better suited fo John Schlitt. Very good job. Both are premier lead singers. Greg turned down REO Speedwagon to minister for Petra. John Schlitt came over from a very successful turn singing lead for Headeast. Both the best lead singers available.
