The same thing happened to a friend of mine's father, age 85. He continued to give his money to a fifty-year-old woman until he finally had to go into a nursing home, then she was cut off by the family. During that time period, the family reported this to the police, but they said there was nothing they could do because their father can give away all of his money if he wanted to.

I was afraid that my 86 year old father was going to fall for his caregiver. Thank God it didn't happen. Old men (and women probably) still want to be loved and if you mix that with someone who is caregiving in a loving way, and with possibly some senility or just misguided affection it can be very scary. Fortunately besides me, my father had a fiduciary that was managing his affairs and his care. She kept a close eye and would step in any time there was potentially inappropriate behavior going on. I would advise families to stay close to your elders and don't say "Oh thank you for taking care of my father/mother" and walk away. You must be involved and keep your eyes and ears open. There are plenty of people in the world who make a career out of bilking the elderly. Keep your loved ones safe.

I think if this man said he was leaving all of his money to The Unwed Cats and Dogs Home in his will this woman would kick him out quicker than you could say kittens and puppies, she is concerned he is spending what she thinks of as 'HER" inheritance, man still has $1.2 MILLION and she's panicking? What he doesn't realize is that his staying there is contingent upon him leaving them money in the will, he should move out, not like he has to be there right now, financially or otherwise. Greedy.

Making him move out will give the girlfriend complete access to him and his money. It may be gone even faster. Then she will be done with him and you will be left with his care. I say welcome her. Invite her for dinner and family gatherings. Get to know her so you can see how she really is and if she really cares about him. If she becomes part of the family, she will have a relationship with the family and be less likely to try to swindle, if that is what she is doing. The other thing is to ask him to set aside a couple hundred thousand that will care for him when the rest is gone. It's his money. He can spend it how he wishes. It's hard to watch someone be stupid but if he is happy, that's important.

Depends honestly. I'm concerned about my in-laws since they own a business(own their job I mean) and have been talking about exiting it for years now that theyre in their 60s. I love them, theyre awesome---but I don't want to deal with the mess of selling that business if something happens to them(mainly my father in law since his health isnt amazing and the business almost 95% depends on him working).
I could care less about inheritance. I just don't want my parents or in laws living with me and want for them to manage their own retirement well.
