On paper, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly are the perfect Renault team. Both young, both very talented Formula 1 drivers, and both French! But unfortunately, it's not quite that simple. Today I look at the history between the pair, and how they went from best friends as kids, to anything but. Hope you enjoy!

I've met him in Interlagos last year and he was kind with everyone who asked for a photo and stuff. And he actually asked about my football team because he liked my shirt.
Just goes to show what an absolute gun of a driver Danny Ric is. Neither Gasly nor Albon could cut it next to Max, but ma boi Danny could.
The last season Danny and Max were together at Red Bull Max was comfortably ahead of Daniel and the seasons before Daniel was much more expierenced and older than Max so I do not think it is fair to say

@@gijsbroere9180 Ricciardo had shocking reliability in 2018. He was destroying Verstappen at the start of the season, and fell off later mainly because his engine kept failing over and over again.
On top of that, in their time as teammates, Ricciardo got 3 poles to Verstappen's 0.
@@pokeboi5438 I dont hate Dani but Max was faster than Dani in quali in 2017 (you cant really compare 2016), and even while Max was crashing it in 2018 he was quite ahead of Dani in quali, and once he got it straight he straight up embarassed him even in the races (which is whree Dani was ahead of him in 2017), obviuosly the points deficit is exaggerated by all the issues poor Dani had to face, but acrosss 2018 Max was quite far ahead.

I just think Ocon's a bit quiet, not shy, but almost like he has his friends away from F1 and doesn't really mind if he has none in the paddock. Sorta 'I'm here to race and be a great driver, nowhere to piss about with friends and drama'

I thought i was the only one who liked and understood Ocon. The guy is one of the most determined drivers, as his parents sacrificed their livelihood for a small chance of him becoming an F1 driver, so his priority is his racing. He was clearly faster than Perez who resorted to cheap tactics to beat him in the championship, not to say that Ocon didn't have his moments but i lost a lot of respect for Perez in 2017. Yet everyone else saw Ocon as the bad guy. Also remember he collided with Verstappen, who is like the 2nd or 3rd most supported driver atm, in Brazil 2018 and all of his fans haven't forgotten that (I'm a fan of Verstappen but i thought Max should've given him more room.)
Ocon is a driver who with his upbringing had to see it more so has a job being one of the sources of income for his family. That kind of tension makes many people lose the “passion” in it like you see in motocross with amateur races. It’s no longer able to separate on track and off track as it’s “if I don’t win this, my parents sacrifice is for nothing”

The only time I think Perez should have received a penalty when driving besides Ocon were on Canada 2017 and Spa 2017, but the funny thing is Ocon also deserved a penalty in Spa 2017 by trying to force his way through Eau Rouge while Perez and Palmer were also making the corner and crashing with Perez.
Th other time Perez "crashed" into Ocon was Singapore, but if you try to call that a dirty move you should also call Ocon's crash into Perez in Baku 2017 a dirty move, which was way worse for the team because both cars had the chance of being on the podium.
The reality is, Ocon crashed a lot, especially in 2018, I wouldn't call them dirty drives by Ocon, but it wasn't Perez ramming Estaban every race so he could beat him, that's just bs. Ocon just seems to put the car on very risky situations and that's why he DNFs so much.
I'm glad Pierre is still good friends with Charles, they still go on holiday together

I actually quite like Ocon. I feel that because he came from a different background than most drivers (more poor and no racing heritage) he had a lot to sacrifice and he couldn’t really afford to lose what he has now, so he is just extremely determined to perform and sometimes that extreme desire can turn into saltiness when things don’t go his way. But I wouldn’t blame him for it considering his journey to f1.
Exactly I am not a fan of ocon, but ocon's story is inspiring. Comes from a very humble background, lived some years in caravan as well. He has that innate pressure to deliver every race.
And to top it off he smiles at very wrong moment , Brazil for eg
he drives like a bit of a dick, i feel like most of the other drivers do not trust him in wheel to wheel battle the way they do with most other guys in F1. he is one of about 3 or 4 of the current drivers I get that vibe from.
His background is not a free pass to be a dick
@@j3d89 Verstappen was a dick too on track in his early season in F1... Ocon is surely a little bit too agressive but, like it's says before, he needs to deliver each and every race to stay in formula 1, to pay tribute to his parents who sacrifice everything for him.
Plus after being demoted from racing point by Stroll, I think he's more angry to prouve his skills than ever before.
And to finish, how people speak about Ocon, really make me think of how they talk about Pierre when he was on the RB car. The so called internet "expert" should take time before jumping onto a driver. Because now everybody love Pierre, but they gladly spit on him when he was at RB.

Exactly the kid clearly has a ton of talent he’s shown that over and over. If things weren’t going great in the first half they should have had the foresight to see this kid can be fast we need to help make him comfortable in the car so we can maximize his talent instead they ditch and things haven’t gone better for Albon.
Personally I think it's the setup of the car. Both Gasly and Albon performed well at Torro rosso in comparison to rb

He's not a good driver and he got kicked out bc of money AND performance
He was beaten in the championship though... Keeping Perez was the better option as well as his experience helped them develop RP20. A race winner car and serious podium contender. Ocon would not have seriously helped in the development tbh, much of the teams focus goes into minimizing Ocon's ability to turn any work environment into a toxic one.
@@Michallote the 2019 car was the worst car they ever had, that came after kicking Ocon out. The 2020 car started good and ended up being the fifth best car at the end of the season even though they copied the best car on the grid, that would only help them at the start of the season, following was up to the drivers to keep it there or develop it further. Ocon joined renault and a few races in they are becoming the top 3 best team. Now at alpine development is going further up judging by their step in pace. Ocon has shown he can develop a car. the 2018 force india was their best car up to the time, 2 years after Ocon had joined the team. He beat Perez in everything bar points and had worse luck and reliability in their second season together.

Both drivers are exceptionally talented. But similar to Hamilton and Rosberg, things happen, things get more heated, and drivers can develop somewhat of a hatred for each other due to extreme levels of competitiveness.

Pierre just made another similar comment in his Belgium interview. When asked about growing up with Houbert, he mentioned that him, Anthoine, and one other unnamed driver grew up in a French driving academy. Ocon was the unnamed driver.

I remember an interview or QA with Fernando Alonso where he said: "You don't have a lot of friends in F1. You get along, but friends? just a few, if any." (paraphrasing). And yes, it's sad... It shouldn't be like that. Maybe as they grow older, they can learn that competitions will end, and when everything else ends, you will only have the friendships you made.

When I saw Pierre going top 5 in Q2 earlier in the season, I had to blink twice and make sure what I was seeing was legit; and in the Alfa Tauri. He's really been putting it down this year. Definitely better improved from last year.

Ocon is just the kinda person doesnt make the effort to be a social media clown like Norris or Russell. he, like Stroll, is just there race, to work, thats why they get along. they just mind their own business and do their thing, and its not like they're rude in interviews, social media or anything, they seem to be completely down to earth guys. they're professionals in and outside the circuit and not cringy clowns like Norris
it annoys me how many ppl bash and judge Esteban as if they knew him personally. guy seems fairly nice in interviews and social media, and he's doing his work properly, thats all he has to do. we dont know him in person, we dont have the right to judge him
and whatever beef there is between Gasly & Ocon its THEIR business. and we havent heard Ocon's side of the story, and theres prob much more to it than what Gasly said as obviously Gasly wouldnt reveal something from the story that made him look bad
THIIIIS!!! Yes!!! Absolutely agree. İ definitely commend Esteban for not taking everything with Gasly further and keeping everything else for himself, shows class and respect. There's no need to bash another person to pine yourself as the good guy and leave a former friend in the dust. Gasly to me proved everything with his actions in that sense as a person. Ocon's upbringing definitely shape his way of viewing everything from racing to popularity. To me, he seems reserved but humble and really underrated.

Also the statement about Gasly being behind him will make him happy is a statement every F1 driver makes or comments when they are asked to give an opinion on another driver, no one wishes for other drivers to beat them.
