Was Felipe Lopez the FIRST LEBRON? Stunted Growth

  • I disagree that FELIPE LOPEZ was anything close to Lebron before Lebron. The only similarity is that he was sorta hyped the same. He's definitely a NY legend, but... imo more for name than game. He went to St Johns and had a solid scoring career, but his teams were terrible every year beside his last, where they were eliminated early by DETROIT MERCY smh. His personality was larger than life, and he made it from poverty and made something of himself so salute to that.

the 30 for 30 on him really is terrific. He absolutely would've been a 1 and done had he come up in this generation, and it was also interesting that he really wanted to go to the NBA out of high school, but it wasn't really mainstream to do that at that point, and his mom wanted him to go to college. I wonder what would've happened had he gone to the league from high school, as he would've no doubt been a lottery pick, and maybe he would've found more success had he done so. But, he really seems like a very good dude, and the stuff he's doing now is admirable.

Great job again bruh. However just wanted to add. In his last year at St. Johns his jumper started to develop. This I believe was the only reason he drafted at 24. As a native New Yorker. His hype was so huge that people were telling him to skip college and go straight to the league. Now, I did not agree but that's how huge that hype was. Someone would have grabbed him. Just wanted to add, again great job. Keep them coming.

Y'all really coerced this man to do a "Stunted Growth" on brother Felipé Lopez? This joker has a whole "30 for 30" about him. But anyway, thanks J.C. Felipé was wipin' ninjas noses, before it was a trend. The Dominican Jordan, hailing from the south Bronx, via the Dominican Republic. Shorty had the whole nation on lock, when he was ballin' out for Rice High School. Even my dad, couldn't pass up the opportunity to see him play live, when they visited Baltimore, for one of their national games.

As a very good friend of Felipe, Im going to spill the beans on what really happened during those college years. The real reason why Felipe wasnt the player he was potentially able to be is because his own teammates, his own "BROTHERS", did NOT like the hype that Felipe came in with and did not want to see him succeed. Pride-heavy Seniors and juniors often had team meetings with Felipe asking him to STOP taking so many shots!!! The team was winning when Felipe carried the offensive load, however his teammates did not like that he had the spotlight on him at all times!! Felipe became very discouraged during the games because of this, removing himself entirely from the offense at times scoring only 10-12 points per game. You even failed to mention the fact that his NBA career was ended EARLY because of a dirty play by PAUL PIERCE early in the season where he was averaging 18 PPG with the TWOLVES!! You claim he was average but he won MVP for the Mcdonald All American HS game? Seems like something an "AVERAGE" player is capable of.

Exactly J.C. Everybody doesn't needs a "stunted growth" profile (i.e. your Andre Barrett intermission). Some people max out their growth to the fullest, even if it doesn't lead to fame and riches (via their sports craft). Your "Stunted Growth", and "Growth Spurt" series, should mostly only profile, the people who had super hype, in highschool, that didn't live up to the hype (i.e. Felipé Lopez). Or the ones that were extremely good in college, but was nowhere near as good in the pros, relative, to what they were in college (i.e. almost every Duke player highly drafted pre 2000). And of course "growth spurt" profilers, are the brothers that overachieved, after being slept on, for most of their amateur careers (i.e. C.J. McCollum). Keep up the good work broski. And for you jokers keep requesting the entire NCAA rosters from 1990-2010 for a "Stunted Growth" profile on every post.. I'm a have my steppers wipe your nose. 🤧

This video was so well done! The 30 for 30 on him is really, really good. A couple of tidbits about it that I gathered...1) He really wanted to go to the NBA out of high school, but his mom wanted him to go to college, and he decided to fulfill a commitment to her and do so. There's nothing wrong with that, but I wonder if he had gone to the NBA at that point, what would've happened. He would have absolutely been a lottery pick, and maybe in a different situation with different coaches, he becomes a better NBA player. 2) I know it was close to home, but he should've NEVER gone to St. John's. They were REALLY mediocre and down when he got there, and there really wasn't much on that team other than him initially. His senior year is when they got Ron Artest as a freshman and Lavor Postell as a sophomore, and Finally they had a little more talent around him & they actually got to the tourney that year. Had he gone to a different school that had more immediate talent, I wonder if he would've flourished. Ultimately though, him not being able to shoot was a massive issue. As you pointed out, as a wing player, you need to be able to make an open shot consistently, and he couldn't really do that.

Felipe Lopez's ESPN 30 For 30 Documentary titled The Dominican Dream is a must see. Even though Felipe Lopez didn't live up to his potential he has done great things working for the NBA and providing goods for different communities. I felt he shouldn't have went to St. John's. He should have went to Kansas or Connecticut. Better coaching is what he needed which he received from Fran Fraschilla in the middle of his college career, but it was too late to achieve the greatness that was expected from him. Fran Frachilla helped him get better in his junior & senior years. Felipe Lopez was suppose to be a mid to late 2nd round pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, but he worked himself into the 1st round after impressive performance in the NBA combine & team workouts. Coaching & culture is everything. Overall, his buzz in High School was great to witness especially for myself being a Dominican Basketball fan.

Probably the first I watched your videos and disagreed. Felipe was a legitimate scorer who could've benefitted from attending UNC, a school he was considering. The Big East was guard heavy from Iverson, Ray, Kittles, Lawrence Moten, Victor Page, Scoonie Penn, Shammgod, Shaheen Holloway, Alvin Williams, and so forth. That era was nasty. He would've benefitted from leaving area esp the Washington Heights community. I'm sure the off court distractions were real.

I remember him strutting after he got a And 1 layup play He looked like RODGER off of WHATS HAPPENING TV SHOW irritated my soul he was an example of a fake sweet ninja's,trying to have a pretty shooting form but cant shoot ,he never could shoot, nor dribble around defenders he fooled alot of people in college with all that gliding around or over smaller defenders to the hoop .and his weak ass side show antics

U forgot the impact that Allen Iverson had at Georgetown that overshadowed Felipe. They wrote more about AI as a Freshman in NYC. AI was gaining momentum in the NYC media from Day 1. He was dropping numbers since the 36 point exhibition game and it impacted the expectations and perception of Lopez. We saw him differently with rise of AI who sat out a yr while Lopez gained momentum without contest. Lopez was and is loved in NY for his spirit. Dominicans are some of the most athletic scorers, but they Avg was around 5' 9' back then.He wasn't the best one, but he had all the best qualities.Basketball was what he did, not all he was.Being the first to attend college and graduate was the dream. It changed the families legacy forever... Salute

Bruh!!!! I grew up a Red Storm fan cuz of Felipe and Ron Ron. My step pop's was Panamanian....and my older Step bro was heavy into Basketball. All that was on TV was Felipe Lopez and Ed Cota (he was Panamanian and was from our hood). That last year in Minnesota was supposed to be Felipe's year!!!! His story would've turned out differently if he didn't get injured!!! The jumpshot seemed to be developing. Should've left after is 1st or 2nd year of college. So sad. P.S: Andre Barrett was nasty!!! I remember the McDonald's game where he low dribbled between his legs down court and then mixed the shit outta somebody 😭😭🤣🤣😂💀💀💀⚰️⚰️⚰️. Please do JOHN WALLACE FROM 'CUSE!!!
