Facing the Consequences of Your Actions

  • Free will is an incredible gift from God that we often underestimate. We truly get to make a choice in every decision that we come across-even the smallest decisions. But guess what we DON'T get to choose?
    The consequences.
Today, Fr. Mike reminds us that every action has a consequence built into it. So, if you want a certain result, make a choice. If you choose sin, you get sin. If you choose God, you get God. The choice... is yours.

I know all to well, that there are no rewards for sin. Up until 2015, had no faith in God, nothing at all. That summer, I'm not sure about it, but I was being yanked to attend church at one of the Catholic Churchs where I live. So I started attending, then I started realizing that was where I belonged. That fall I went through RCIA, found my faith, and was baptized and confirmed Catholic in the Spring of 2016. Then The Lord opened my eyes to a darkside that exists within martial arts, that a lot of effort is put in to hiding, so he pulled me out of martial arts. Still I resisted and said no to him, not realizing he was tugging and yanking on me. Come 2020 or was it in 2021, during the pandemic and after I don't recall how many confessions, I finally started praying the Rosary. I thought at times, that The Lord wanted me to try and be a Deacon in the church. I was wrong on that, in 2022, I started going on retreats to a Benedictine Monastery that is about 3 hours from where I live, and now in 2023, and I have been praying about and continue to, The Lord has revealed to me, that he has told the monks at that Benedictine Monastery to admit me as a monk, and continues to get me ready for when it comes time for me to make the vows. If I had known, in my younger days, even back in the 1990's that being a monk is what The Lord had in his plan for me, I would have prayed about it and pursued it a long time ago. In closing The Lord didn't give up on me, despite me having for a long time before this said, no to him in some way or another. I urge people to regularly go to Confession(The Sacrament of Reconciliation), and prayerfully consider what The Lord may be calling you to.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

I think women stopped in 1980-s but that was more of a "sexual revolution" thing, and then it sounds like the church wanted to stay popular, rather than it actually being redundant due to some type of evolution (e.g. not celebrating Shabbat as Christians due to the "natural evolution" of Christ's coming)

According to Job's friends he didn't need any help from them at all other than advice on how to change in order to avoid more misfortunes in life like he experienced before according to them only because he made bad choices in life. Instead of becoming in a state of learned helplessness while people pleasing all of his friends god inspired him to continue praying for them no matter what. Nothing more was said by Job's friends after that. We are left to imagine what they from there continued to think of Job. Did they believe he was a workaholic while continuing to work hard at his praying for them there? Or did they just get bored while Job got busy praying for them because he was no longer defending himself during their constant false accusations of him to explain why Job ended up experiencing severe adversity? We don't know. All we know is the results of focused prayer for others is destined to be benefitng ourselves too regardless if that is at the time meaning that it is taking our attention off of our own pain at the time.

Love all you guys, just wanted to make sure you understand salvation because most don't. Salvation is free, as stated in Romans "for the wages of sin is death, but the FREE gift of God is eternal life through christ Jesus our lord. Grace is also free by its very nature. Ephesians 2:8-9 "for by grace you have been saved through faith, and not of yourselves it is a GIFT of God. Not of works lest anyman should boast." Salvation is by grace through faith alone, you cannot add anything or you are not under grace. The Greek translation for the word grace is CHARIS meaning "unMERITTED favor." Simply believe the gospel to be saved and be saved permanently. "After you BELIEVED, you were sealed with the holy spirit of promise who is the GUARANTEE of our inherentance until the redemption of the purchased possession."
Romans 11:7 "And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work."

Whatever sin you commit regularly, try to pray daily and use your best judgment to avoid it. They say change the people you surround yourself with, things, and change the places you go.
I carry a heavy burden of shame from various sins from gossip, lying, etc.

    THE MYSTERY
THE MYSTERY IS THAT SOMETIMES GOD BEARS WITNESS OF JESUS THROUGH JESUS, AND AT OTHER TIMES JESUS BEARS WITNESS OF THE FATHER IF THE FATHER COMMANDS HIM. JESUS IS NOT JUST GOD'S SON; HE IS HIS PROPHET AND SERVANT AS WELL (JOHN 5:31, JOHN 5:37). THIS WILL CONFUSE THE CARNAL MIND BECAUSE IT CANNOT BE SUBJECTED TO GOD'S WORD, BUT GOD IS NOT THE AUTHOR OF CONFUSION. JESUS IS GOD'S INTERPRETER; THIS IS WHY JESUS SAYS YOU HAVE NEITHER HEARD GOD'S VOICE NOR SEEN HIS SHAPE-BECAUSE HE IS NOT GOD HIMSELF. ALL THINGS ARE COMMANDED FROM THE FATHER FIRST, THEN ARE SPOKEN THROUGH JESUS. JESUS SAID HIMSELF THAT HE CAME TO SAY AND DO ONLY GOD'S WILL, WHETHER HE SPEAKS OF GOD, HIMSELF, OR ANYONE ELSE. JESUS SPEAKS AND DOES ALL THINGS USING THE POWER AND SPIRIT OF GOD ALONE (JOHN 12:49 50).

    Only this is life eternal:
Jesus said “not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father” (John 6:46). Jesus did all he did for us to be united with God, yet people stop at Jesus and have completely forgotten about God. Instead, the whole world says “Jesus is God,” no matter what God says through Jesus. Jesus himself prayed to the Father and said, “and this is life eternal, that they might know YOU, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3). This comes from Jesus himself; anyone who goes against his words will not be with God (Revelation 22:18-19).

So, correct my understanding if I'm wrong, but when we as Christians believe in the saving grace of Jesus' death on the cross, but occasionally we fall, and choose sin, with some latent expectation that Jesus will save us (which He will/does - by his Passion and death on the cross), haven't we effectively chosen Jesus' death on the cross; aren't we joining the throng stirred up by the Pharisees crying out "crucify Him, crucify Him", when Pilate was ready to release Him? So when we choose mortal sin, we are effectively choosing to send Jesus to the cross. That's the consequence. That's the price He pays for our wrong choices. It's something else to think about next time we think we might be able to get away with something. "they say, “The Lord does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive""

How fortunate you are that your sister could take care of that problem for you. I am sure she did not want to frighten you by telling you what it could’ve turned into. Yes, you were inconvenienced for a few days. But had she not removed it had it not bothered you enough to have her remove it you might have found yourself in a pretty serious problem. Blessings to your sister.

Mercy is not self pity or the pitying of others while believing they no longer have the need for personal boundaries which they have the right to set for themselves. Instead of for example them living in an institution where there is no door to their room whcih they cn shut to be alone when they want to.

    hey father mike,
here is a question i have been wrestling with...
If asked both the Orthodox church and the Roman Catholic church will say come worship here we have apostolic succession we are the true church founded by Jesus down to the current day. Can they both actually trace back to that time. If yes is one "more right" than the other? Are both equally the original church that started with the Jesus and the original Twelve and therefore both right? if yes does it matter then which I choose to join (Roman vs Orthodoxy)? I do know about the east- west schism of 1054 and the split. The question is about the time that came after end up to the present time, and why i should choose one over the other. PS my background for asking this question is that I am a non catholic and non orthodox, and i was raised in the Mormon faith. thanks in advance to father mike and all others who may choose to comment on this.

I hope someone with more knowledge can answer your question, but as a Christian of the Catholic Church i of course would say you should become catholic. Maybe if i were Orthodox i would be saying the same thing about the Orthodox faith though. I have studied a bit about Church history and from what I've learned it seems both sides have failed each other, but i definitely think the West really messed up when the East needed help, and as a Catholic i feel shame in thinking that there's a lot that needs to be apologized for. However, I think the split was caused by prideful people, and that God wants His Church to be one...and there is also something to being united under the Bishop of Rome, whereas they don't have that. The debate was really over how much decision making power the Bishop of Rome has...
