    Plumb plomb, the crazy time in tools. I have lots of em. I got my first socket set in 1966, proto, 3/8, then in 67 got a 1/4 & 1/2 set, still have all, orig. boxes, and the sales slip for them all, (No I don't have a problem..LOL) I used them a lot until about 6 yrs ago. After seeing this video, I am going to dig in my pliers that I haven't looked at much boxes, don't know if I have a parrot head. Great video, Thanks

      I'm 55 and I got my first 2 Plomb tools in this last year, a couple of 1940s 5249 3/8'' ratchets - I think they'll still be going after I'm gone.

    As usual, I enjoy seeing the old tools, but I especially enjoyed your comments about your grade school. And I can relate, as I went to a Catholic grade school and was taught by the nuns wearing what we called their penguin suits. They were very strict and no one fooled around. That was in the early 50's.

    When you find plomb tools and the part number starts with the letters ( WF) { Wright Field Air Force Base ) that is a tool that was for the U.S. Military during WW2. The civilian tools with the pebble finish started in 1945 and ended in 1948. Civilian Plomb tools during 1941 to 1945 era, a lot of them will be marked ( WAR FINISH } { no chrome } The whole Plomb / Proto story is on Alloy Artifacts website. Plomb / Proto has been around longer than Snap-On.

    In our parish we have two schools and the competition to get in is fierce as parents know that the Catholic teachers accept no bad behaviour. The children STILL look like that in school photographs as my grandson knows. I am sure Peter is now organizing a small war or revolution somewhere in the world😁. Great mish mash Monday!.

    I can't help wonder what happened to Peter - Where is he now? Only that Sister knows for sure.
    I like the 1/2 way pause and show you did on that wrench it really shows the drastic difference between before and after.
    Could "Proto" stand for Professional Tools?
     ScoutCrafter Remember the photos of the captured crew of the USS Pueblo in LIFE magazine? The NOKO's released the photos not realizing the crew was "flipping the bird". The NOKO's believed the story the crew told them it was a Hawaiian good luck sign. After they found out what it really meant the crew was beaten pretty bad. I wonder if that was the inspiration for Peter's action. The ship was captured in Jan. 1968.

    Check for Peter in the Post Office registry. Looks like a good place to start. I got to look at Leavenworth once from the outside in the Ahmee and heard the cell doors clang when I was still able to get a tune out of a guitar and went with a fiddler buddy to the jail to make a little music. That was more than enough. I've tried to be a good little boy from then on but as you, We've both been insulted by professionals! And the wrench was nice too.

    Good afternoon sir. Plomb started using the upside down triangle in place of the letter o long before the lawsuit. In the late 1930's That wrench is a civilian pre 1945 style wrench. Some of their most collectible are the ones with both PLOMB and PROTO stamped on them. I like Plomb tools, but only collect their ratchets. Proto tools, I collect all of them. The other Plomb tools I sell to buy more Proto tools. Good video today as always. Thank you.

    Even though the newer craftsman wrenches like the one you showed may be technically superior, I really like these old designs. We use a Bonney Zenith Double Boxed end wrench on our mill, it's my favorite wrench. It's much too badly pitted to restore like this.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I too have a love for all things old... Not primitive old but all that stuff from the turn of the century. This wrench has heft to it and is super strong but the edges were just a little too pronounced. I was able to keep the form of the original design and still soften the edges just enough where you would want to use this wrench! Once the late 20's rolled around comfort was a big design factor in tools and the handles started to be really nice- wide and smooth! I remember in the 70's they were importing ratchets from overseas that the knurling was so sharp the ratchets were just about unusable!!! =D

    Nice job! I have some Plomb wrenches from my Dad and Uncle's tool collection. Once you've restored a wrench like that, how do you protect it (assuming it is a collector and not a daily user)? Carnauba Cleaning Wax? Shellac? Oiling?

    • @ScoutCrafter

      Hello NN! I always add one coat of Carnauba wax stop the fingerprints but when the tool is polished like that it's very hard to rust unless it is left to the elements or outside... Mine are inside warm and dry so need nothing else... LOL Thanks

    I went to grade school in an Ohio steel town. The public schools there required girls to wear long dresses or dress slacks. No shorts or jeans. I got in detention several times, even though I was a good boy. I tried to hide that from my parents which went about as bad as you can imagine. One of my classmates got thrown out of the school and his parents sent him to military school, but he said it was easier than Middletown public schools when he came back after a year. Then my parents moved to a uppity city school district where dress codes were very lax and about anything went on. Girls bra-less in halter tops, wearing hotpants etc. Early 1970s. Well anyway, Middletown had a shop class where boys were allowed to use any dangerous tools they were taught to use. I was 14 then and not allowed to use the table saw or grinder or anything with a tiny bit of danger, even an electric drill in the uppity school district. I still miss the tough old Middletown schools where boys were men and girls were dressed like old maids, and kept pure as far as possible in co-ed public schools, and no shenanigans were tolerated, and you toed the line or else corporal punishment was provided as a deterrent.

    I went to Catholic school too! St Aloysius in Great Neck, and we had almost the same uniforms and to this day, a tan shirt and a green plaid tie affect me deeply. After 8th grade I went so St Mary’s Catholic high school in Manhasset and they had brothers instead of nuns and these guys were rough. I remember one of them grabbing me by the chest and throwing me into the lockers and as he started yelling at me for what I had done (kick my lockers lock shut), he was thrusting his finger into my chest to make his point and it felt like I was being jabbed with the end of a broomstick. I understood why he did it and wasn’t mad or anything. But, because I was in 9th grade and it was a sexually segregated school, the boys would be looking longingly across the street to the girls school at them playing and wanted to get out of that school and I ended up failing out and had to repeat 9th grade in a public school and in that school, I got my act together and ended up excelling in my studies and that’s where I went to metal shop and learned a lot of what I know now.

He said they were out and out wild! Everybody had everybody else's back but they were lucky to get out alive. I'm telling you....the stories were something but I actually found a video on youtube of his plane going into battle. I even got a screenshot of his B-25 tail number from the video! Actually Russia did not rebuilt Germany, on the contraire between 1945 and 1953 they disassembled everything which was of use for them, whole factories, and even 11,800 km (7332 miles) of railway tracks. In 1946 they changed the things, and did no longer disassemble things, and used the incomes of factories which use a special legal form, like the Wismut mining company. Where do you think they got the uranium ore for their bombs? From the ore mountains in Germany...
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ore_Mountains
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wismut_(mining_company)
    In western Germany the things were different, the US invested there to create a bastion against communism. Same in other countries like Japan.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always thought East Germany was a result of Russian influence... Can you imagine if that happened today? All the procrastinating and back door deals? It would take decades to even decide who would do what!!!! I do know the Russians got the German Rocket Scientists! =) SPUTNIK!!

    • @Marcel_Germann
      @Marcel_Germann 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScoutCrafter The americans picked the german rocket scientists, the famous ones like Wernher von Braun. The russians picked the rest, the german rocket engineers. That was the reason for their success at first because the scientists know how the theory works, but the engineers are the guys for the practical work.
      And east Germany was the work of russian influence, but the influence was different of what you imagined.
      And for these things we're still paying today to improve the economics and the infrastructure of east Germany, almost 30 years after the reunification.
      And now imagine what would happen if north- and south-Korea would reunite. That would be a total disaster for the south. It would ruin them because the economy of the north is far more worse than the GDR ever was. And some of the east-german economy was ruined on purpose I suppose. They've introduced the west german Mark and set the exchange rate to the east-german Mark to 1:1. That was at first good for the people which had savings, but that broke the neck of most of the eastern companies, because then they were too expensive for the global market. And at last it was bad for the people because they've lost their jobs. But that was the way for some west-german companies to get rid of some competitors.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Marcel_Germann Honestly I would like to see a reunification of North and South Korea if it would benefit both sides. It would be a difficult task and would need help from outside investors. Politics is the biggest obstacle for that reunion I think...
