The Ghost Town - Part II
It's not often you come across an abandoned ghost town, this week we get to see what the time capsule house had to offer. Let's begin with some exteriors as well as a couple of the items found inside!!
After the railway was expanded to the area in 1905, the townsite began to emerge from the land in 1909. There was once a railway station, two grain elevators, a school and a post office which was attached to the general store. Like most of the country at the time the area was largely settled by Europeans, people from Scotland in particular.
The general store was closed in 1968 and the post office was last in operation in 1975. There is also a locally known story that the last owner of the general store took his life in the back of the building in 1989. Although I have not been able to find any proof of this, the years following would see many different owners as they would never live there for more than a few years, before once again putting it up for sale.
The town was created because of the railway and when it was no longer necessary to have towns along the rail line, the people of the town soon disappeared like ghosts.
Today, only three main buildings remain, two houses and the former general store. There are also a few outbuildings further back in the fields.
Keith's parents emigrated to Canada in 1922 from Scotland, he was born in 1928 along with his twin sister. He travelled to school by car in the summer and by horse drawn van during the winter months. Some of his hobby's included playing kick the can and fastball, he also enjoyed collecting things, such as gopher tails and crow's eggs.
After finishing school, Keith continued farming in the area where he grew up. He moved to this very home in 1977 when he was in his 50s. He spent most of his time farming the surrounding land until he unfortunately had a stroke at the age of 75 and of all days, it was his birthday.
Keith would spend his remaining years living in a retirement home while still occasionally returning to the farm to see how his gardens were doing. He would later pass away at the age of 88 leaving all of his personal belongings behind.

Great back story on this one! As a young boy in Manitoba, my grandfather snared and collected gopher tails. The province had a bounty on them and paid a couple cents a piece for each tail as they were considered a nuisance animal back in the early 1900s.
Well, I suppose that explains why collecting them was one of his hobbies then. 😆 There certainly were a lot of signs of them in the area. Thanks very much for your comment!!
Cool old house. Must be difficult to live alone in such a remote location. The house had a cute design. Liked the shape of the roof and the little entryway/sun porch. Each room served its purpose. Quite a difference between this and the elaborate mansions that have so much wasted space. I wonder who was happiest in their home, probably not the mansion dwellers. Thanks James for telling the stories of this little ghost town. Makes it come alive.

I was chuckling at the gopher tail collecting too, that's a first, Must have been a quiet peaceful life living there and he must have loved it, to come back to check on his gardens. Sad when people aren't able to pass on at home. Love that fridge.

Back before they made scratching posts for cats, people would often put up carpet on a corner of the wall so that cats could sharpen their claws. Gopher tails, 😂😂😂😂 Great video James!

First, I absolutely believe that was a small black widow spider. I am 53 years old now and have lost all of my grandparents and a couple of aunts and uncles. There is nothing that I have found in my life that is as profound as the passage of time. It is the source of Joy and Pain all at the same time. The idea that such important people and important events fade until it's nothing more than old photographs and junk. Nothing makes me more introspective than an old graduation picture or an old wedding photo. It automatically puts everything into complete perspective. These videos I not only enjoy, but also receive sadness from. It really is just about what we do with our time in this world and what we leave behind

James this is my favorite house also of the Abandoned Ghost Town. Allot of interesting items there, I am always amazed how many of these different items that are left in these homes good video..🙂

Those were some extremely old hockey skates in the garage! Love seeing old bread boxes. Loved the living room curtains too. We used to have a hamper like that only ours was all white. Don’t like paneling but at least that one was a nice light color and didn’t darken the room. Quirky little paintings, make the house feel lively with family energy. I remember my grandma had a key holder like that. Of, back then she had at least 2 keys just for the car.😉 Those slide holders are awesome! I could definitely see myself using them in a craft! The corner rack in the kitchen looked to be in decent shape. What was that thing you said you had as a kid? I’ve never seen anything like that before! Cute old fashioned fruit basket. Really cool little house that was!
It was a coin bank, each of the towers held a different size coin, I think they were 5¢, 10¢ and 25¢. It also had a flimsy chain through the top to lock it. Glad you enjoyed this one and thanks so much for your comment!!
James what a wonderful look into the past, just so much to explore while watching this one, I just love the retro colors, clocks and chairs just so much. OK since this was a ghost town did you hear or see anything unusual, I had to ask lol, oh and gopher tails this was great at the end haha, thanks James!
I didn't see anything I couldn't explain during the explore. Surprisingly I had only seen a couple of cars drive by over a few hours too, it was a very quiet and peaceful explore. Actually probably more trains driving by than cars! 😂 Glad you enjoyed it Polly and thanks a lot for your comment!!
Haha, I had one of those coin towers as well. I remember it being red. And that was a neat little house. Still sad to see them abandoned, especially when there's so many personal effects in the home. Once full of life, but now silent like a graveyard.
He had kids, so I'm not entirely sure why they wouldn't have at least taken some of the items from the home....or maybe they had already taken everything they wanted. Thanks very much for your comment!!

Hi James! Very interesting time capsule. I especially love it when they have vintage technology and appliances left behind. Really shows you how long it’s been abandoned. I saw a video years ago of one in Florida. Think it was called Paramore, or something like that. I love a ghost town!

interesting place lots left surprised the curtains are in good shape still, carpet on the wall, home made scratch post maybe they had cats.

Another time capsule that I really enjoyed watching. Yes it was small but it did not disappoint me.
This video reminds of memories I cherish from family members I had and miss but in a good way a sentimental way 😊

I didn't realize it but I just read the info about your channel and you did say you take pictures for all kinds of companies and big named ones as well, that is something to be proud of. Definitely a skill set involved.

Keith appears to have lived a very simple life, clearly with very little in the way of finances. From the age and condition of everything in that house and the overall signs of neglect and filth that reflect through the decay, I would say he was borderline of living homeless. That home was in need of attention long before 1977 when he moved in as the next owner. That house simply doesn't speak of a happy place to be by any means, even if the gardens surrounding it were flourishing.
It's hard to say, because some people don't like to spend money on things, like updating etc, especially if they aren't likely to see a return on that investment. The fact that it's a ghost, means that people generally don't want to live in the area any longer. Also, I'm not sure how long this one has been abandoned but I'd imagine it's been several years, if not decades and unattended buildings degrade quickly without upkeep. Not sure but I'd guess most situations are different given the circumstances. I would imagine that this land doesn't have a lot of value, given that it's in a ghost town. Thank you very much for your comment!!
