ReelBlend Podcast 98 | A Very Heated Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Debate

  • If there’s one thing all Star Wars fans have in common, it’s passion. That passion often brings us together in ways that only cinema and Star Wars can, but it can also drive us to opposite ends when it comes to debating what makes Star Wars good and what doesn’t. The “sequel trilogy” of Star Wars films that we’ve all come to enjoy (to varied degrees) over the past few years have been some of the most divisive additions to canon of all time.
    Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, as the conclusion to the epic saga spanning 9 films and numerous decades, may prove to be the most divisive yet, and we, as many groups of friends are, find ourselves split right down the middle. However, that makes for a really fun show! Some of you may love it. Some of you may hate it. Either way, in episode 98 of ReelBlend, you’ll find something to relate to. Enjoy!

    "A New Hope had a lot of problems"???? Totally disagree with that. That was a great film, and enormously influential. None of the Disney Star Wars trilogy movies can even compare to it and the original trilogy.

      Even the despised 'Prequel' trilogy is better than the Disney garbage. The latter movies are dark, literally and figuratively, and dull.

      @@Avital4414 I agree, the prequels are definitely more satisfying than Disney Star Wars trilogy also. Revenge of the Sith is my favorite Star Wars film.

    51:00 That is a really dumb point. Just because someone likes a film, does not mean they like or think everything about that film is amazing.

    I feel like I’m one of the few people who disliked TLJ quite a bit and still think it was a better film than TROS. Was it better than any of the prequels? Overall I’d say yes, in the sense that it was more entertaining and the chemistry between the characters is far superior, but from a narrative structure, it’s a lot messier than what Lucas did with I - III. Current ranking of the saga: 5, 4, 7, 6, 8, 3, 9, 1, 2. I’ve only seen it once so hopefully its standing might improve, but I don’t see it changing much.

      you you like 7 more than 6 or 3?...nonsense...also the last jedi may have annoyed people but at least it tried to be different and not indulge nostalgia and play to the video game fans...its not a great film but its better than tros..which Is an awful star wars continuity film on phantom menace level ...its a big middle finger to everyone..fuck that film

    Its nice to get some Star wars movies after all this time but the fact is they are Not from the mind of George Lucas so they cant really be compared. All new movies are going to be some other directors take on the story. Im just enjoying them for what they are, 2nd rate Star Wars.

    I'll never get over the marginalisation of Luke from the new Trilogy and the new GOD mode Jedi powers.. You cant tell me they gave people what they wanted. I would have taken Luke training Rey or Luke doing anything... I liked it when there was rules in Star Wars that couldn't be broken. Kills it for me. It seems loads of people love the new film though. So that's good..

      ZanyGeek I’m 37 and I felt sincerely sad for my 43 year old brother. Growing up he always loved Luke Skywalker and when word came out these sequels were getting made I was genuinely excited that my bro was gonna see his favorite childhood character up on the silver screen again. I am still perplexed at how Rian Johnson struck out when all he had to was swing!

    • @AdderTude
      @AdderTude 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vhscopyofseinfeld Oh, he did swing but not only did he strikeout, he denies making a mistake, blames the pitcher, catcher, the fans and almost everyone else, and tries arguing about how he deserves to be on base.

  • @AdderTude

    Attack of the Clones at least tried to be consistent to the story since Phantom Menace. The sequel trilogy was a garbled mess from start to finish. There's overwhelming evidence that Rey is an absolute Mary Sue, along with Finn being utterly useless and merely a bystander, Poe is a bumbling idiot. Rise of Skywalker, just like Last Jedi, continued breaking rules established by the first six films in the name of spectacle and style without any explanation or setup, and the pace of film is meant to make fans come up with a plausible explanation themselves as it moves from one spectacle to the next at a brisk pace. Rise of Skywalker is nonsensical, the in-depth video reviews I've watched all have the same criticisms (minus Kevin Smith, he practically worshiped the movie) which is an utter testament to how the entire arc was written over three films. It's inconsistent and incoherent. The two worst films for me are easily TLJ at the bottom, followed by TRoS.

  • @Enzophanis1892
    @Enzophanis1892 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First time I saw it I liked it but I thought the structure was incredibly messy and suffered from a disconnect from The Last Jedi, second time it felt like none of that mattered and I absolutely loved it.

  • @WesleyWhiteside

    The best I could describe it is as a "guilty pleasure." I know it's a bad film. But as a Star Wars fan, there's so much to enjoy.

    • @razkable
      @razkable 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah but thats not how most fans think and for you its enjoyable but for most its just nothing all to ruin the series and end the skywalker saga by just killing them all off just to seel new merch to kids and make a female the main character who adds nothing new to the table as a character ..its not special anymore...and palps back making anakin's arc pointless plus now that you can force heal hes even more of a terrible character since his whole motivation was to save padme and gain this power that rey just has now.. ..absolute disgrace 2/10 film..worst by far

      it goes to show if its entertaining looks great Is action fast paced aka not as boring or exposition filled gives you what you want regardless of continuity and has a great villain and decent enough acting people will eat up anything in 2019 even if the story is shit and script is full of holes..this movie says don't think about it just like force awakens...hate films like this..3/10 worst star wars film by far..the prequels allowed you to breathe and see the flaws and told a narrative these new films tell nonsense and expect us to buy it

    • @AdderTude
      @AdderTude 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@razkable At least the prequels tried to be consistent over three films. Calling Attack of the Clones still the worst film out of all nine is being far too harsh, considering TLJ and TRoS are both nonsensical and completely incoherent.

    I loved TLJ. It was legit beautifully filmed, I liked the story and I’ve watched it multiple times. I liked TROS. Just liked it. I hated the intense fan service - even though I’ve been a fan as long as Sean has (I think he is a year older than I am). The beginning was too frantic. I was ok with some of the fan service, and felt the ending was predicable - but ok.
    I want to watch it again, because I didn’t like TLJ the first time I saw it, but the second time it clicked. That might happen again with TROS.
    I genuinely think the reason a lot of people didn’t get or like a lot of stuff in TLJ, because they are younger people (mid 30’s and earlier) and don’t understand just yet how a bright eyed optimist can become jaded and cynical over so many disappointments and sadness in their life. People change. Shit happens. And Rey came back and showed him hope and brought his optimism back. It was so damn obvious.
    My biggest regret about this film is that it was going to be Leia’s story, and as a person who was a little girl when the original movies came out and loved Leia so much, I wanted her movie so so badly. But you can’t really bring back someone from the dead. :)
    And Sean, the kiss made sense. :)

      Donna Raphael I disagree about the people’s ages argument, though understand where you’re coming from. I recommend watching the MauLer critique series (or maybe even AngryJoe for some good laughs 😄) to understand why a lot of people didn’t like TLJ. I personally thought LJ was ok, just super slow and would have preferred if Poe was the one with Finn going to Canto Bight so the two characters could’ve had more development together
