  • In today's video we had Stuart from Eternit come round and look at the air flow and humidity of our current sheds. Me and Stuart have been talking for well over a year on whats the best idea going forward with the new shed and how we can improve our current one.
I know it's not the most exciting video in the world but its massively important for cow health. I really enjoy videos like this, looking at the science not just guessing!
    Hope you guys enjoy it.
Smoke Bombs go off at 9:33 and 17:37
Once again a huge thank you to Stuart for agreeing to be on film with me, Really appreciate it!
He did mention that his sheets are the "Semi compressed" Sheets, Not fully compressed.

    Hey Guys,
Let me know what you think about this video? It’s a bit different because there is loads of information. I personally find things like this super interesting the more and more I got in to it. Not going to make these videos every week but do we like to know the science? Or just stick to the norm?
    Thanks for the feed back

Bit off topic but I read something about pig sheds in the USA the other day. I get how slatted floors work etc but those guys were storing the slurry under the slatted floors / under the sheds rather than moving it out from under the slats. That can’t be good for the animals can it?

Moreover, it is always good to know where things can be done better. Classic scientific tag line: Knowing is half the battle.

Whenever you're going to spend a lot of money on a building, it pays to explore as many different aspects of design as possible before starting the build. Good design is everything - you do not want to be partly pleased with your new building, but regretting not doing this, or having that, particular design feature. Its the architecture equivalent of 'measure twice, cut once' carpentry; make sure to get it right before starting building. Love the smoke bombs, though.

Stuart has some good points. We went for 22 degree roof pitch for better airflow, also if you use Galebreakers on sides instead of boarding it gives you more options to remove/change if needed. I will never build without gaps between buildings in the future! Helps with access and ventilation. 👍

I grew up on a dairy farm in the United States back in the 50s and 60s and I find this video to be absolutely fascinating with all the science and testing for light ,air flow humidity, etc. For milk production and the comfort of the cows. Our cows were pasture raised they were on the pasture for 10 to 12 hours a day they came back to the barn to be milked in the morning and evening. I can't even imagine that there was that much thought / science put in to the building of our milk parlor. Just simply very interesting and fascinating video.

Not a farmer but horse owner. So still a very interesting and enlightening installment. Horses spend their nights in a barn with young cattle (varying in age from just weaned until a week before due date). The barn is old but kind of effective, I think the Dutch builders didn't do a bad job back then. It has tall doors on the short ends, it's open under the roof on the long sides and the roof itself is open at the top and has a raised skylight from front to back. Animals live on either side of the corridor. Only downside is that you'll get rained on when it's really windy and raining from the rain being blown in between skylight and roof.
Doors will be closed and shutters will be placed only when it's freezing and windy. On average, wind blows from the west here most often, I assume (as all field shelters have their doorway facing east).

When my uncle put in his robots he extended his shed and we changed the design of the ridge and side sheeting for ventilation. The ridge originally was just a gap and now it's a proper covered ridge, the sides are tin sheets but we spaced them out from the wall so air comes through the gap between the tin and the wall instead of through perforated sheets or timber cladding. The tin on the roof is also spaced aswell. Seems to have worked well it would be interesting though to see it with the smoke bomb to see how the air is actually moving.

I am not a farmer. From what he seemed to stress was to get the air straight up after being pulled in from the sides. Sounds like exhaust fan air handlers on the roof would suck out humidity and control flow of air up and out. With automatic controls it would free you up from needing to fiddle with things. I kept waiting to hear you talk about that. Maybe I missed it? I love how you are sharing your process. Good animal husbandry is thinking about the animal's health conditions (mental & physical) as well as the $ profit.

That was fierce interesting Tom, that type of information is brilliant to know, even if it was over some peoples heads, least we can look back on the video and write it all down. Love to hear more about it Tom, looking forward to being on the adventure with you.

Tom before the first smoke was set off I knew the result because where I work is a slatted beef shed 66 metres long with 55 pens of 6 metres by 4 metres it can hold 550 cattle of various sizes. It is surrounded by sheds and used to have sheets missing to aid ventilation which did nothing. Next a large gap was created along the 4 ridges and sheets were moved to create gaps between the sheets but cattle still got too warm. The cure in the end was fitting a canopy over the large ridge opening helping to keep out rain and creating a vacuum. Each ridge was done a few months apart but you could feel how fresh the air was in there instantly. The final proof of the vacuum like your smoke was a dry November when the cattle came in and the automatic feeding system creates some dust which was saw blowing out and because of the dry November it settled just below the canopy on the roof but no dust on the roof at the other gap till we fitted it’s canopy.

It’s good to see that you are using expert advise on ventilation and lighting. Technology has certainly changed in the past fifty years, you might as well use it to design and build the best barn you can afford to get the best from your cows. And yes, the smoke bombs were cool too!

I'm pretty much like a vast majority of people watching this video, I know very little about farming, and what I do know I've learnt from watching Tom's video's 😅. But what is inspiring is seeing people like Stuart with huge amounts of experience sharing that knowledge with Tom, yes I know he's trying sell a product however you can tell he genuinely wants to share that knowledge with the younger farmer's like Tom. Some trade's and industries you don't get that and the older boy's shoot the young lads down and are closed book for information which is a real shame. Anyway waffle over, keep up the good work Tom keep inspiring stay motivated and keep grafting 💪

Well done to you Tom. So, so many farmers will be gobsmacked at the tests done today and the productivity they could be losing. You've most probably helped 100's of farmers. Being on TH-cam is a fabulous thing when we have farmers that want to share the knowledge they have for the good of their animals. I wish I could come and give you a hug 🤗 I am so proud of you being the farmer you are. I am not a farmer at all by the way

Gasp...the amazing sum of money over time that something a little as air circulation or heat retention because of lighting and building material...AHHHH. So cool. Can't wait to see it go up. When I saw the smoke bombs, I thought we were going to see the loader tractor go up .... but that means even more to look forward too.

I know there’s a lot of science going on but I think Stuart is also a good salesman 😉 he is after all working for the company that you’re getting the work done by!

    I found this very interesting.
My mind seems to always go to the science part, not that I KNOW IT, but, to seek out people who do know it.
I'm more excited now knowing that you are approaching this build with experts. Farmers know a lot because they were either very much aware of their surroundings or they were taught to pay attention to their crops or cattle etc. We just happen to have hopefully more products at our disposal to help create a healthy productive environment.
Add this video to many that you already have that should be shown to the youth in school. Farming is a business and educational.

Hi Tom and family. I have been watching the hoof gp since the start of the year and have heard him talking about you. I can honestly say I am now addicted to your videos. Love your dad and watching what you do on a daily basis 👍🏼 keep them coming, love the toys, the drone footage. New fan for sure.

Well this channel has taught me that grass isn't just grass and a shed isn't just a shed.
I LOVE hearing about all this research and that all these things are considered for the welfare of the animals.
What you have been talking about was never considered by me (I'm not a farmer) so I hope fellow farmers know or think about this stuff.
