@@ShaneM223 ... Whistle does not matter, as was explained after. Once an official rules forward progress was stopped, whistle is meaningless. This isn't the first time this has happened. It happens all the time during a game and in how they spot the ball. It's only accentuated here because of the circumstance of the game and a potential TD, and fans crying about it, but it happens a lot during spots of the ball during a game. If fans are expecting officials to be perfect every time in a fast moving sport and match the fans' personal definition of what should be called, good luck with that.
He was definitely not stopped you can literally see his legs still churning. That being said both these teams defenses were so bad that they should just both lose
Why is everybody talking about the bad defense performance from both team and not talking about how that should have been a touchdown by Tennessee in OT. He definitely scored before the whistle.
it’s not even that it’s the fact that the refs gave us a lose due to their inconveniences.they blew the whistle when they shouldn’t have during ole miss with the scoop and score and the goal line td against purdue. but then again we’re tennessee no one likes us😅😅😅
3:24 refs missed a very obvious running into the kicker. Probably would've resulted in an offset due to the horse collar penalty, but with a clean tackle, that's an automatic first down for Purdue with the game tied.
4:27 refs ignore a blatant PI after calling PI on literally every play for Purdue. I don’t care for either team but the screw job they did on Tennessee was disgusting
Because it's not sudden death. Purdue has a chance to score after they do, and they didn't have any confidence that their defense could stop them. It's a real disadvantage to go first in college OT.
What Bryan said. If Tennessee kicked a field goal in OT, Purdue would still get their turn, in which case a touchdown would win it. Going first is indeed quite a disadvantage, since you don't know what you'll need to tie or win, whereas the team that goes second already knows exactly what they need. For example, in this case, since Purdue knew TN didn't score in their possession, then they knew all they needed was a field goal to win it, so there was no need for them to take risks like going for it on 4th down within field goal range.
Yeah sure, whatever... Instead of kicking the FG, Coach Heupel goes for it on 4th down, and comes up short.... Idiotic move. Gave the game away to Purdue
I'm an Alabama fan so Tennessee isn't one of my favorites. However that was definitely a touchdown by #20. He was never down and it should have been ruled a touchdown. But great game by both teams.
@@gking407 After the ball crossed the goal, they verified that on the replays. He was never down, they ruled forward progress was stopped before the whistle blew. It's kind of hypocritical, because several times runners got knocked backwards, but they never blew those plays dead & going backwards is the definition of forward progress stopped.
The refs followed the rules. What lost the game for Tennessee was the lack of time management and not using timeouts at the end of regulation. But they were probably too scared to leave any time on the clock. The end of the first half was probably on their mind.
@@sellison2192 refs absolutely did not follow rules on forward progression. that play was 100% still being played out and they arbitrarily decided when they wanted it over.

I was at this game. One of the most exciting football games I've ever seen. I'm a Purdue fan and think it should have been a touchdown, but the UT fans were some of the most disrespectful fans I have ever seen in my life. It was an awful experience in that regard. Booing the drum line, booing injured players, threatening Purdue fans near me because they were cheering, throwing beer and hats throughout the game. I saw some great sportsmanship between the players, but the fans were awful.
@@trippclayton Totally agree, all that I meant was that this game, it was the vast majority of the fans. I've seen some pretty terrible Purdue fans. And like you said, I've seen terrible fans at nearly every game, but most of the time it isn't like 80-90%
The play in OT where they thought they should have had a touchdown was called correctly by the officials. The reason was there was another Tennessee player, #88, who was trying to pull the player with the football forward. (See the 5:55 mark of the video) That is not allowed. The forward progress stopped at that point short of the end zone.
You gotta give Tennessee credit, their off season was terrible, they lost some really good players (Like Eric Gray, who ran all over Oregon last night). Coach Heupel has them pointed in the right direction.
Literally took the time to look it up. It's under Rule 9-3-2-b. If they were going to call it short there, they either should've penalized them for pulling or called it dead at best. You can't pull. I saw others comment and while I ALSO did not know that was a rule. I guess it makes sense why they stopped it and didn't end up giving it to them after review.
Tenn deserve to lose this game. That clock management with 3 timeouts and throwing for the endZone repeatedly when you were 5 years short of fg range was atrocious.
That's a touchdown Tennessee...he was on top of the defensive player and reached the ball over the goal line without touching the ground! Tennessee was ROBBED!
Absolutely idiotic referee took an incredible touchdown away from Tennessee. That was one of the best 1 yard runs I've ever seen. The very first time I watched I could see his forward progress was not stopped and he wasn't down. So obvious. Refs need to be held accountable.
I'm biased, but the ruling was correct. I would be so upset if it happened to us, but a player is not allowed to pull a player to assist him in his forward progress. The ball carrier was stopped in his tracks until his teammate pulled him into the endzone. Rarely is it enforced, but don't be upset when it is.

They didn't call it right live. You can't advance your own runner forward by pulling them. That's in both college and pro. It's a dumb rule but look it up lol.
@@johndavis8746 ahh!! Didn’t even consider that. Appreciate that, as it’s always good to learn more about the game.
@Noel Kunz I find that rule so stupid honestly but it's there🤣. The refs should've just said that after reviewing then there wouldn't be as much arguing over this😅🤣
@@johndavis8746 agreed
@@johndavis8746 there was no pulling. Otherwise they would have called that. Thus, they were wrong. You don't call forward progress when there's still movement towards the goal line. It was a bad call. Period.
Look at 2:38. Is that an illegal block above the waist from #3 & #11 on a Purdue player? If yes; that play is called back and Tenn. is at the 33 yard line with 3rd down and 5. Do they still get a touchdown?
Worst tackling I’ve seen in a bowl game. Exciting, but probably didn’t need to be *that* exciting
Best bowl game of the year…..by far! Wow!
That reception and run by Purdue’s TE was the best play of the bowl season imho.
True
Thank you to the producer of this video. U don't want to take anything away from Perdue amazing performance throughout this game. However, Kodos for this channel for at least showing the controversial call in the endzone by Tennessee. I mean thanks but for Heaven's sake. TOUCHDOWN TENNESSEE!
Shame that Tennessee had to lose. Both teams were balling. Great game. Watching it here in Savannah, Georgia.
as a tennessee fan i agree
Tennessee won for sure on that 4th down, the refs just fucked them of that win. Those refs should have been fired and that was a pretty bad call on their part.
@@brandon737 everyone keeps talking about the pulling the runner penalty. You know that wouldve just helped us right lmao. Give us the penalty and repeat 4th down and well kick a fg. Only big 10 fans agree with that call and you dont have to dig deep to see why. Great game tho minus us losing probably the most fun game to watch along with ole miss
Tennessee got screwed! That was most definitely a TD for the Vols in overtime…Ref blew the call! Hoping we don’t get any bad calls in the playoff games.
forward progress was stopped, teammate pulled ball carrier towards endzone which ends the play and whistle does not end the play so no TD 🤷♂️
@Rafael Felan I agree. Worst call ever. Even after replay. Refs are terrible in college football.
@@laidenologyl226 it was not stopped. There was no whistle. I don't care either way, I'm a duck fan and we have our own problems, but that was terrible. These college refs are trash.
Wrong.
it’s not even that it’s the fact that the refs gave us a lose due to their inconveniences.they blew the whistle when they shouldn’t have during ole miss with the scoop and score and the goal line td against purdue. but then again we’re tennessee no one likes us😅😅😅
@@codenameliberty9883 yes you are wrong that is very clear. That was a TD even Ray Charles could see that.
Once you get stood up for a second the play is dead. The refs fucked up by not Whistling on time.
@@adub1300 nah, he got stood up. Forward progress. If only you knew the rules🥱
3:24 refs missed a very obvious running into the kicker. Probably would've resulted in an offset due to the horse collar penalty, but with a clean tackle, that's an automatic first down for Purdue with the game tied.
No, they didn’t. He flopped. Tennessee player never touched him.
Tennessee won that game! That’s crazy!! Roll Tide!!
Wow that's a touchdown in my book
Basically the TN guy 88 was pulling his teammate so that’s why the ref called him down!
Try telling that to the rest of these pinheads! They all believe Tennessee was robbed... lol!
Exactly this
The A Train would be proud of that Boilermaker TD
Up 10+ points yet still loses the game, classic huepel
Watched yesterday.. Insane action
4:27 refs ignore a blatant PI after calling PI on literally every play for Purdue. I don’t care for either team but the screw job they did on Tennessee was disgusting
It was an amazing game to watch
Purdue Basketball: wanna see me beat Tennessee in OT
Purdue Football: wanna see me do it again
Lmao did you see that call that wasn't called a touchdown. Refs must've had money on Purdue lmfao.
@@5roductionz1466 keep crying #spoilermakers
@@DelGTAGrndrs you clearly don't know the rules of football. Tennessee should have one. Im not even a tennessee fan!
I felt nuts taking Purdue as the final in my parlay but they pulled it off whew
Maybe I’m missing something, or some kind of rule. But why did Tennessee go for it on 4th down twice in field goal territory in OT?
Take the points.
Purdue should give Coach Heupel a game ball. Some of the most absurd calls in recent history.
worst play calling ever.....wow .......Tenn needed that loss...
I think you mean the refs, considering they gifted this game to Purdue on a silver platter
Questionable at best
Yeah sure, whatever... Instead of kicking the FG, Coach Heupel goes for it on 4th down, and comes up short.... Idiotic move. Gave the game away to Purdue
@@Tbiblaine23 Are you sure the Tennessee defense didn't have anything to say about that?
Tennessee got screwed. That was an amazing touchdown. Great effort by the Tennessee running back. Should be proud.
Remember when these were two elite programs
I'm an Alabama fan so Tennessee isn't one of my favorites. However that was definitely a touchdown by #20. He was never down and it should have been ruled a touchdown. But great game by both teams.
they ruled forward progress not that he was down. that was the difference
Actually he was down, the ref was on TV making the call.
When did they whistle the play over?
@@gking407 After the ball crossed the goal, they verified that on the replays. He was never down, they ruled forward progress was stopped before the whistle blew. It's kind of hypocritical, because several times runners got knocked backwards, but they never blew those plays dead & going backwards is the definition of forward progress stopped.
When number 4 just kept running and never looked back at 1:50 😂😂
It's a flash back game when Tennessee vs ole miss, had players faking injuries and cramping and one bad call from the referees cost Tennessee the game.
The refs followed the rules. What lost the game for Tennessee was the lack of time management and not using timeouts at the end of regulation. But they were probably too scared to leave any time on the clock. The end of the first half was probably on their mind.
Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking.
@@sellison2192 refs absolutely did not follow rules on forward progression. that play was 100% still being played out and they arbitrarily decided when they wanted it over.
@@looperscooper3339 did you see in the video or little pictures one player pulling the other in an attempt to advance the other? That's when the play stopped. I don't know why you can push a player but not pull.
It was a carbon copy of the Ole Miss game.
Great defense!! Brother? Looks exciting.
I was at the game cheering on Purdue. The first play in the video was awesome and I lost my voice from yelling when that happened! One of the most exciting games I've ever been to!!!
They're from Tennessee man... What you expect
They are called Voltards for a reason.
Booing injured players is something they do at all the SEC schools. Yeah, it's pretty disgusting.
Both defenses were trying to throw the game lol
Big plays all day long exciting game for sure
You gotta give Tennessee credit, their off season was terrible, they lost some really good players (Like Eric Gray, who ran all over Oregon last night). Coach Heupel has them pointed in the right direction.
I usually watch two losing teams in the NFL for a great game since theyre so bad but this is much better
Welcome to another segment of "What the F$*% is a defense?" And another incident of RefBall!
Amazing game! No one gave up.
That was definitely a touchdown .... The Tennessee coach not sleeping on that one tonight.... Wow
VolunTEARS. Blame the refs yet their coach was as inept as their defense.
They didn’t mention anything about pulling the player. They said forward progress had stopped, which is BS.
That was most definitely a touchdown
As a Kentucky fan it does my heart good to see Hee-Haw U get robbed.
Considering the Vols take Kentucky’s lunch money every year for the last 100 years, I can see why you’d say that.
This was a great game to watch!
This was a great game…
Eh it was aight I just feel sympathy for Tennessee since nothing ever goes for them.
We always get effed by the refs. Look up Jabar Gaffney touchdown from 2000.
Tenn deserve to lose this game. That clock management with 3 timeouts and throwing for the endZone repeatedly when you were 5 years short of fg range was atrocious.
Officials CAN'T get it right, even with instant replay!
Say what you want to folks...this was one of the best bowls games of the holiday season.
That's a touchdown Tennessee...he was on top of the defensive player and reached the ball over the goal line without touching the ground! Tennessee was ROBBED!
Read the rulebook. Correct call, unquestionably. Not even remotely controversial. That is, unless you don't know the rules.
1:50 LOOOOL big man fallin down while celebrating is hilarious
Absolutely idiotic referee took an incredible touchdown away from Tennessee. That was one of the best 1 yard runs I've ever seen. The very first time I watched I could see his forward progress was not stopped and he wasn't down. So obvious. Refs need to be held accountable.
Salty
Best Bowl game thus far this season.
I thought this was going to be a blowout when UT put up a quick 21 points. Glad Purdue was able to pull it out. BoilerUp!
Good to see college head coaches really harping on playing good defense
I'm kentucky fan. That being said, I despise Tennessee but I'll be the first to admit that even Helen Keller could see that was a touchdown
was at this one with the purdue band
i still don't think my heart has recovered dear lord this fkin last 5 minutes
I'm biased, but the ruling was correct. I would be so upset if it happened to us, but a player is not allowed to pull a player to assist him in his forward progress. The ball carrier was stopped in his tracks until his teammate pulled him into the endzone. Rarely is it enforced, but don't be upset when it is.
His legs were still churning….. also he stretched his arm out….. highway robbery.
It's the No Defense Bowl™
Not to take away from the victors but we all know that man scored.
What is it with Tennessee being 1 yard short?
Wow, that was a Tennessee touchdown that they called short in overtime
What's the elevation of Nashville? It's gotta be 4,000-5,000 feet, right?
Regardless of the call Purdue beat Tennessee In Tennessee if one play decides the game both teams put it all out there
they both put it all out there the refs just helped one win it
2:38 is that clipping? by no.3
That was a touchdown no doubt at all
Yeah except for the part that it wasn't. You cannot pull a player. Correct call. No controversy whatsoever.
I love the ending Tennessee vs Purdue.
Big 10 !!
I just back to my hotel from this game. I cannot believe I saw this one in person. Just absolutely unreal finish. That was the longest last 5 mins + OT I've ever experienced in my life. Boiler Up! Also.. that totally should've been a td for Tennessee in OT.
Why does everybody think this? You cannot pull a player. Play is dead the second that happens. 100% correct call.
Did the crowd realize how bad hookers deep balls were all game ? I mean wide open wrs all game underthrown or overthrown or even worse never thrown too
