  • The 2021 Music City Bowl college football game between Tennessee and Purdue had an absolutely thrilling ending as Purdue won in overtime 48-45. Purdue scored a long 62 yard touchdown with five minutes left to take a 38-31 lead. Then on the next drive, Tennessee scored a touchdown with three minutes left to tie it up, in large part due to a 69 yard play. Purdue then scored another touchdown on a 70 yard pass to make it 45-38 with under three minutes left. Tennessee answered yet again, and tied the game up with under two minutes left at 45-45. Tennessee got a stop on the next drive, but missed a potential game winning 56 yard field goal. In overtime, Purdue stopped Tennessee on fourth down thanks to a controversial forward progress call on fourth and goal. Purdue then kicked the game winning field on their possession to win the 2021 Music City Bowl 48-45.

    2. The ot call was correct. The official ruled the play dead you can see him running into the field signaling the play dead before he blows the whistle and before the ball crosses the plane.
    3. If the official didn't rule it dead (forward progress stopping), it would have been flagged on the lineman grabbing the runner pulling him into the end zone (no touchdown).
    4. Even if it was ruled a td that doesn't mean purdue wouldn't have scored a td on the following drive.

      @vbscript2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What Bryan said. If Tennessee kicked a field goal in OT, Purdue would still get their turn, in which case a touchdown would win it. Going first is indeed quite a disadvantage, since you don't know what you'll need to tie or win, whereas the team that goes second already knows exactly what they need. For example, in this case, since Purdue knew TN didn't score in their possession, then they knew all they needed was a field goal to win it, so there was no need for them to take risks like going for it on 4th down within field goal range.

    • @jalenbarnes7888
      @jalenbarnes7888 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, people keep saying they got robbed but turn a blind eye to the fact that Tenn's defense gave up 600+ offense, and 12 plays that went for 20+ yards for Purdue. You're not gonna win a lot of games when your defense keeps giving up big plays, period. (plus TBH that controversial 4th down stop IMO is actually the right call, the ref just screwed up by not blowing the whistle fast enough)

    Seriously though, since this was more or less a meaningless game, (except to Vols/Perdue fans) the bad call doesn't really matter in the grand scheme. But if this was the national title game, it would be getting calls for rule changes and ref firings.

I'm a Purdue fan and think it should have been a touchdown, but the UT fans were some of the most disrespectful fans I have ever seen in my life. It was an awful experience in that regard. Booing the drum line, booing injured players, threatening Purdue fans near me because they were cheering, throwing beer and hats throughout the game. I saw some great sportsmanship between the players, but the fans were awful.

      The play in OT where they thought they should have had a touchdown was called correctly by the officials. It's obvious that the forward progress was stopped because you had Purdue guys trying to pull him one way and Tenn players trying to pull him into the end zone. If the player can not move forward on his own then forward progress has stopped. If he reached a second or 2 earlier he may have gotten the TD.
