That last call was bad though, and since it was 4th down, it had the biggest impact. Ball was thrown out of bounds, and the DB made more effort to make a play than the WR. It either no-call hand fighting or uncatchable, but no way is that 15 for the offense.

The ball hit out of bounds at the 10 yard line - when it did, the receiver, who had been held up by the DB, was between the 11 and 12. Feels like that might have been a catchable ball had the receiver's route not been interfered with.

I don't have any skin in this game but man were these refs ass in the last minute. The umpire staring right at obvious holding on a takedown by Syracuse #76 (5:22) but instead they call holding on the defense, and then follow it up with pass interference on a ball where the guy would have had to have been 12 feet tall to catch it at the 15 yard line. Purdue put the wrapping paper on the gift for Syracuse with those unsportsmanlike penalties but this ref crew finished it off with the bow on top.

Following this "logic" OL should just grab DL and fall to the ground every play taking them with them.

Freeze it at 5:49 or 5:50. You can see the impact of the ball on the orange stripe along the sidelines. That orange stripe looks to be about a yard wide (maybe a little more, but not a lot) and that ball lands right around the middle of it. That's about 1.5 feet, not 15.
That was pretty obvious but I'll say that when your coach starts getting in the refs' faces they miss those types of calls and catch all of them on the other side. I saw it with Pelini.

It was a penalty on the field, regardless if the ball was catchable or not. You can't impede a receiver's route after 5 yards if your not making a play on the ball. It will be called everytime.

Either way, it was clearly PI. How do you think the receiver injured his arm? It’s because the defender made a play on the receiver, not the ball.

That's an NFL rule. In college, if the ball is around the receiver and he gets bumped before he has chance to grab it, it's a PI. It will be called everytime in college. It will never be called in the NFL.

I live in Syracuse so follow the team even though I’m a Georgia grad. There was another angle that clearly showed the receiver with both feet in the front corner. It was a TD.
Purdue should never have lost this game. Late hit out of bounds penalty on the 3rd and 10 that gave Syracuse a first down and they ended up scoring a TD later on that drive. Then the two 15-yard penalties after they score the go-ahead TD. A pass interference penalty on a 3rd down on Syracuse's winning drive. I've never been so mad at the way a game ended in a long time...

The HC needs to sit that man down for a game, to show the team that everyone is accountable. 15 extra yards would have been nice at the end.
It sounded like the ref said 15 yards on the kicking team head coach. The announcers said special teams coach but I think they were incorrect. The head coach getting flagged is even more inexcusable.
Man the call for this ending might have been just as good as the ending. Those guys were def happy to be able to call a 4th quarter like that after they just had to research 2 teams all week whom they likely won’t see again this year.
Definitely PI but I also question whether it was catchable. I agree with @hartsickdisciple that it wasn't that far out of bounds, but the at the first moment of contact with the defender that ball was just about sailing 3-4 feet over their heads, and even if not contacted I don't think he would have caught up to it.

Payne Durham, #87, seems like a really, really crappy person to compete against and have as a teammate. He had multiple instances where he was running his mouth, showing poor sportsmanship, showboating/celebrating disrespectfully, and in general being a bad teammate/competitor. He possibly cost them the game with the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. I'd really hate to have him on my team because of the liability and chemistry issues. Like for real, you can't set him up for a good play because he might showboat afterwards and erase the progress with a penalty. He's a liability. It's sad to see a total lack of maturity like that.

This loss falls 100% on Durham and the special teams coach. No self discipline. Syracuse had a lot of "no-calls" of holding on that O-line some were right in front of the referee but his eyes were watching that QB scramble. #87 for Purdue you own this loss... you put them at midfield with little time to take. That was a pointless penalty to take...
I would put more on the COACH that cost them a second 15 yard penalty. Both deserve blame, but I'd put more on the coach than the player.
On the 3rd down defensive holding there should have been offsetting penalties. Lineman tackled one of the pass rushers to buy his QB more time.

It was a penalty on the field, regardless if the ball was catchable or not. You can't impede a receiver's route after 5 yards if your not making a play on the ball. It will be called everytime.

@@jowens150 the ball has to be a catchable pass for it to be PI. It wasn’t, therefore it shouldn’t have been called. It’s actually stated in the rule too. Regardless, Purdue wouldn’t have been in that position without the two dumb unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
That's an NFL rule. In college, if the ball is around the receiver and he gets bumped before he has chance to grab it, it's a PI. It will be called everytime in college. It will never be called in the NFL.

The only thing that’s questionable is whether the ball was catchable or not (in this case it wasn’t) so you side with the offense at that point and consider it a catchable ball.

I live in Syracuse so follow the team even though I’m a Georgia grad. There was another angle that clearly showed the receiver with both feet in the front corner. It was a TD.
Purdue should never have lost this game. Late hit out of bounds penalty on the 3rd and 10 that gave Syracuse a first down and they ended up scoring a TD later on that drive. Then the two 15-yard penalties after they score the go-ahead TD. A pass interference penalty on a 3rd down on Syracuse's winning drive. I've never been so mad at the way a game ended in a long time...

Definitely PI but I also question whether it was catchable. I agree with @hartsickdisciple that it wasn't that far out of bounds, but the at the first moment of contact with the defender that ball was just about sailing 3-4 feet over their heads, and even if not contacted I don't think he would have caught up to it.

Payne Durham, #87, seems like a really, really crappy person to compete against and have as a teammate. He had multiple instances where he was running his mouth, showing poor sportsmanship, showboating/celebrating disrespectfully, and in general being a bad teammate/competitor. He possibly cost them the game with the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. I'd really hate to have him on my team because of the liability and chemistry issues.
Like for real, you can't set him up for a good play because he might showboat afterwards and erase the progress with a penalty. He's a liability. It's sad to see a total lack of maturity like that.

It had to have been a make up call for the play before, where the receiver made a toe tap catch, which they called out of bounds, despite his toe very clearly landing in bounds
