Bonus tip for the Donderbuss Cavalry: If for whatever reason you find yourself defending a castle and donderbuss are among your forces it can actually be quite useful to dismount them and position them on a wall that covers the approach to a gate or above a killzone. They are surprisingly effective at dispatching or routing attacking melee infantry.
Joe Scirrotto I dont think so mountedt guners are moslt just mountedt matchlock I havent testedt this but it wil most likley be tru and the have les men so even normole matchlock units would be better
It’s really sad that bow cavalry is so weak in this game. It’s one of the coolest formations in history and samurai were originally horse archers. Even today mounted archery is still a part of Japan tradition.
My guess before this video premiers: 1: Donderbuss Cavalry 2: Tokugawa Mounted Gunners 3: Yoritomo's Yabusame Cavalry 4: Bow Cavalry, with a mention of the Takeda I put the hero over the Bow Cav because while they have less men, cav already have low numbers so it doesn't matter as much. However knowing MrSmartDonkey he might invery 3 and 4, as the hero can only be fielded individually in the Campaign.
I moded that to my game then changed fire cavalrys' spear to long yari spear so they impact hit before getting hit by normal yari. Also did the same for great guard though noticed that some of the cavalrys' long yari clip on uneven ground and look weird standing still but they sure look cool on the charge.
@@datuputi777 That defeats the purpose of cavalry though. They are Flankers. Never use Horses in frontal Assault against Pikes (Ashigaru's Yari). The mod you have will just make the game easier.
Fireblast89 if you don’t pay attention to your Donderbuss cav and there is a fire cav unit well You can say good bye to the donderbuss and I say that because I’ve done that before
With lists for such limited unit pools, you might as well make a "Top 1 Oda Long Yari Ashigaru Units" list! Serious suggestion: Since we're clearly out of the realm of "Top 10s" or "Top 5s" search terms, would it make more sense just to say "Top [Type] Units" without the number?
PLAYING OTOMO right now. 1. Donderbuss don´t shoot at 50 range, more like 30 range as seen in 4:55. Their bullets travel like 100 more range and that makes the 50 range stat stupid. 2. 40 hero Yabusame always ranks first with around 300 kills in autoresolve offensive sieges. In defensive sieges it is also good because aura for friendly units and long range. 3. Bow samurai cav are usefull because in offensive siege you can use fire arrows to burn down gates and then run to safety. In defensive battles they can skirmish inside the fort and then chase routing enemies. For autoresolve I recommend: 1 General, 1 bow cav, 3 samurai archers, 3 Tercos, 7 naginata + 5 katana samurai.
The one thing about Swooping Crane that I think has the potential of making bow cavalry and its hero version a lot better is that it allows your cavalry to outpace charging infantry while maintaining fire. BUT, it only does so for standard unit size or lower in your game settings. Any higher then standard and bow cavalry especially will have more cavalry in the same size circle formation, leading to them clogging up and slowing down. So you end up in a situation where their effectiveness is dramatically different based on your default unit size.
@@anvos658 That would mean swooping crane having that speed with smaller unit sizes was probably unintentional. But man does it make them a lot more capable
Tokugawa mounted gunners actually better than any infantry musket because they can shoot from the backline just like infantry archer unit. Use it as replacement not as skirmish cavalry
5:01 hahaha that single guy shooting to route the enemy unit. He was like "seriously, 6 out of 80 are left and u still wanna fight? Fine *pulls trigger*
My Takeda campaigns were much easier once I learned to rely upon bow cav, which, despite being only of average strength, give incredible battlefield control and mobility that light or yari cav cannot always provide. But. Upon your recommendations previously, my Otomo playthrough featured stupid amounts of dunderbuss cavalry, and holy shit. Just...holy shit. The carnage.
In terms of multiplayer, best are Donderbuss cavalry.Mounted Gunners,Bow cavalry and Yoritomo Yabusame Cavalry.I tested all.Donderbusses are usually match winners.
I know this video is old but I like to point out in Avatar multiplayer the Dunderbus are a huge pain to deal with. You can only have one but your opponent pretty much has to place significant attention on them because the slightest opening you leave can lead to frustration and defeat.
I find if you commit to using bow cav as the major unit in a mounted army with Yari behind them in reserve you can have an army that takes very low losses. It could be my imagination but when I build entirety mounted armies it seems like the neighbouring AI recruits stacksof Yari Samurai which are perfect forthw bow cav
Yoritomo are so OP, they are the ultimate skirmishers. They basically work as a siege unit in battles, you'll not have to attack in any battle just put them and pull the enemy towards you
1. Donderbuss Cavalry 2. Mounted Gunners 3. Bow Cavalry 4. Yoritomo's Yabusame Cavalry I think I've been watching you long enough to know your preferences? x3 I'm honestly with you on Bow Cavalry, not having a 360 firing arc is a huge negative in my book. In Attila I won't even consider recruiting a horse archer unit that doesn't have Parthian Shot, with the only exceptions being the Sassanid's Savaran Crossbows and Semitic Pagan Himyar's Zodiac Archers, who are both good enough to make up for it. Although sadly the Zodiacs suffer the same problem as Gunpowder units in Shogun, late game building requirements.
Donderbuss Calvary to me are how Hero units should’ve been or at least half, either give them a full unit size, the ability to hire as many as you want, or both.
lol i really love to use bow cavalry. Put them in the pointblank range behind the enemy's army. It's also good for countering enemy's bow ashigaru. If they aproaching you and got separated from the spear unit you can just use bow cavalry to charge the bow unit. But i don't recommend to make them stay in the mele fight for too long even if they're against bow ashigaru.
I actually in my experience find the Yoritomo Bow Cav better than regular Bow Cav, in my Hojo campaign they regularly got 100-200 kills where the regular bow cav struggled to get 60.

Biggest flaw with the Total War 3 engine is that archers are unable to fire in a 360 degree firing archer and they must be lined up like they are using guns. This is why Horse Archers are pointless in all games using the TW 3 game engine. The TW2 game engine handled horse archers much better.
@@antlantis1234 Still dont you think samurai bow cavalry should be allowed to use parthain shot style tactics. It would have allowed bow cavalry actually being slightly better at their intended role of being a hit and run harrassing unit

I was planning on mentioning that and then completely forgot to add it to the script.
