Induction Rail Coil Gun (Part 1)

  • Introduction to the Induction Rail Coil Gun.
Basically the Induction Rail Gun is a UNI Rail design where a ring of magnetic flux travels down the rod or rail to repel the copper or brass projectile.
Watch how I wind a tight clean coil with 14# wire with no end caps to contain the wire from falling off.
    About 2 inches in length.
    3/8 Steel Rod
    11 layers
    #14 Wire
    0.15 Ohms DCR
    1.75 mH
I switch to this topography because only one coil is needed and most likely several pulses will be needed to get to proper operation.
    Also less weight and size.

Surely a coil with just two connections can only be an inductor not a transformer?

Is this a coilgun, or a railgun? It can't be both. The work similar but on very different principles as in one has a coil and barrel while the other has rails and no coil.

Hello: As you stated: you are winding 11 layers of 14 AWG magnet wire (can I use 12 AWG--I have lots of this and no 14 AWG). I assume that each successive layer has a couple of less turns. Can you tell me how many turns went on the first and last layers?

Clay, Can you tell me what kind of tape that is you are winding around the coils--the different colors of the tape look like they are different widths. I assume it's conductive--from the all too familiar sounds I hear! I have several rolls of insulative yellow "transformer tape"...don't know where this would be useful. Aren't you worried about the eddy current effect of the conductive tape surrounding each layer killing a bit of the self-inductance of the coil?
    Thanks again.

Hello ...Clay...? Is that the right name. I am still interested in your coil array, but plan to modify it a bit. I am using critical damping along with other method on coils down the line. After seeing you wind that thing, I do not want to repeat that process!! The method I am going to use is for research timing with various turn-on methods. I have decided to use the Phillips bits, and that is why I need to know the unloaded inductance as well as the loaded inductance (measured with a simple passive "L-meter". I hope you can supply this. Also, since I am familiar with the coil-driving mathematics of the coils, I will, if possible, try to help you in any way if I can. I use a very cheap LCR meter that goes from 2uH - 200uF (bit on the high side). Cost: about $18.
    Thanks much...again,

    • @Solarenemy1
      @Solarenemy1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Have you done any real coilgun research or building? Is this your first one. Firstly you cannot use a metal barrel unless you cut a slot the full length to break the circuit it creates. It acts like the secondary of a transformer. So the eddy currents created in it rob you of the majority of your power. That is why if we are left with no choice in out design but to use a metal barrel we cut a slot in it for it;s full length before the coil is wound. The barrel in a coilgun serves no purpose but as a coil form and to protect the inner windings in the event the round was to strike them. There is no magnetic force that is traveling along your barrel, pulsed or otherwise. Sorry to break this to you. I have built these guns for years and have tried all sorts of tricks. This design has one function and one function only. When the coil is energized the round is pulled in to it. The coil is then de-energized right before round reaches the center threshold and starts getting pulled back by the coil. The round then travels via kinetic energy only the rest of the way. If this was a multi coil then each coil would repeat the previous process imparting more velocity and energy into the round.
What you might be thinking of is an induction coilgun which is different from this model that is a reluctance coilgun. With an induction coilgun the coil is wound flat and the projectile is a ring made of non ferromagnetic material like aluminum or copper. The coil can also be shaped like an inverted cup that the ring sits halfway into. The way that works is when the coil is energized. The ring generates an opposing field of the same magnitude against the coil thus pushing the ring away from the coil at high velocity. These are often called ring launchers but you can get creative and configure them to launch horizontally as well. A rappel ring woks very well as the rounded cross section makes it somewhat aerodynamic
