What a lovely vet. I'm very sad for Lily but that horse now has a diagnosis. He can be dealt with appropriately. It was sensible to have him vetted well when your pride & joy will be on his back.
This is why you do the PPE. That vet was great, as is her trainer. It's not the initial expense with a horse, it's the upkeep for many years to come. This horse would have been another huge disappointment for Lily and more money down the drain for the Rhodes family. This also explains why he probably isn't in good condition, either, because he probably gets pretty sore when being worked consistently. There are a lot of horses out there, but I know from experience that at that age it is hard to walk away from one that you already have expectations for. You will find the right one eventually - there really is no time crunch here except for Lily just wanting a new horse as soon as possible which shouldn't be a deciding factor. She can continue to ride and learn and have fun with Blaze until "the" horse comes along. It's going to be hard for her to wait, understandably so, but that's life and just getting into the horse world is basically unaffordable for many folks, so she is already a lucky girl, although it probably doesn't feel that way to her right now.
@@dianehouse1441 Yes, it's when you pay the vet of your choice to do a thorough exam on a horse before you decide to buy it. In this case, a condition was discovered that would have prevented this horse from being able to advance the way Lily wants to, especially with her jumping goals. So they will not be buying this horse.
Thank you for showing the vet exam. It would be harder on Lily to purchase Ernie and deal with all the problems and not be able to ride him. You only looked at one horse and the search might take a while. Lily, the right horse is waiting for you!❤

Such a typical off the track racehorse problem! Ive got a thoroughbred off the track that I've had for 14 years. Almost never a totally sound day in those 14 years. Has cost me more than a college tuition to keep comfortable. So glad yall did a ppe with xrays, doing things the right way prevent you from getting into a situation like mine. My advice always is, NO THOROUGHBREDS. They are more often than not, fragile and often broken in some sort of way. Even though I love them.
I just realized the parallel between your possible purchase of a new horse, and a person’s possible purchase of a milk cow. Your first time purchasing a horse didn’t go so great. Now that you have more knowledge, you can make a better decision. Same holds true for someone who gets your intro to the family milk cow. They’ll get your knowledge and experience. Good timing, Justin.
Dear Lily, you need a strong, healthy horse with lots of longevity. I hope you can recover from such a disappointment by knowing that horse needs a quiet life (he’s done his work ands needs some TLC) and then look forward to a horse that is the perfect partner for you💕🙏 Write down everything you are searching for in a horse and put it under your pillow 🥰
Lily I'm so sorry but its so GOOD that you had all the testing done. Great vet doing all the testing.... He's a beautiful horse and will find his perfect match but for you there is a very special horse waiting for you for your continued development in your riding skills...
Hey Lily. Part of faith is believing that the absolutely perfect match will be drawn to you -- even if that means some disappointments along the way. I can see you are a spiritually sensitive soul. Don't be afraid to let the process play out. Learn how to process your intuition and trust that in learning to let go of poor solution to having a quality horse to be your "weapon in the ring" and your friend . . . you are training your intuition to recognize "the real thing" when it comes along. That is a life-skill that will serve you throughout your life. Pay attention to your parent's intuition in these things and trust their lead. You will be an amazing person for having paid attention to it.
I'm so sorry, Lily. I know it's heartbreaking to not get Ernie but look at it this way. There is the perfect horse out there for you and, when the time is right, you will find him. Everything happens for a reason and in the long run you will be happier. Sending hugs and love! ❤
Love your stuff as always! You are very motivating to me and my family as we are small homesteaders and growing. We live in the North East Georgia mountains and I wouldn't trade this living for anything! Can't wait to see the next video. 🏴🪶💚
A possible offspring from Winnie and Toby Dog from Gold Shaw Farm would probably make the ultimate livestock guardian dogs. Morgan should definitely bring Toby along the next time he visits you and start a breeding program!
Experience speaking do NOT buy a horse lease one until Lily gets more experience she’s gonna out grow any horse every two years until she’s about 14-16 years old. It’s better to lease and trade up than buy and be attached for life and need to get another horse every two years as Lilly’s abilities outgrow each horse. You can get leased horses that stay on your farm.
I totally agree with this. However, they will probably struggle to find someone that will allow a leased horse to be in the pasture with the cows and no shelter. That can be risky business for a show horse.
Hey kids and "nearly adults"! Please never underestimate just how much of the content-value you provide! I know the younger ones run away with the "cuteness content". But your growing competency and maturing relationship with your Mom and Dad is also a big part of what we come to watch. Ya, it's educational to hear Dad going on about the logistics and "the spirit of the homesteader". But watching "you be you" is a huge part of the content too. Never underestimate the value you bring to this enterprise as you grow up in it -- and the support and good will of your viewers. Thanks for what you share. Your supporters only see strength, and a reminds of their own tough times with discovering adulthood when they were your age.
I'm glad you did a thorough pre purchase. Lily, I'm sorry this horse didn't work out, but he would have never been able to do what you wanted. He would have only gotten worse, and would start bucking, and he would have been miserable. You will find the right one. There is a unicorn out there for you. We've had many unicorns, and very few that couldn't be managed.
I remember horse shopping. It can be heartbreaking. But there is a perfect match out there for Ms. Lily. Keep your head up baby girl. Your future best friend is waiting for you to find them.
I had one with kissing spine because I didn’t do a PPE but we kept her until the end. It is a devastating disease for horses. The vet mad it sound minor but it is not. Be glad they found it before you bought the horse because you would not be jumping or even showing him. V
I'm so so sorry for Miss Lily! Watching her cry hurts this mommas heart. Watching her grow developing her passion for horses has been wonderful! I will keep her in my prayers that our Father will place her perfect horse in your guys path. Love you all!!
Very interesting , thank you for that! Lily don't loose heart, better to take time to look for a good horse rather than see him in pain and constantly having to go to the vet! Blessings! Hugs!
I think there is a trough with a lid that the cows can open with their nose to drink but it closes over the water so they can't poop. Its also insulated so it wont freeze as fast.

I’m so sorry Lily but there is a wonderful horse just a little ways down the road. Don’t give up because you wouldn’t be able to do what you wanted with Ernie because he couldn’t give it to you. Life lessons can be so hard but you will be stronger in the end and you’ll have a wonderful horse soon. ❤
Well Miss Lilly, it's probably better to do the physical on any horse you need to reach your goals with. It's hard to let go of a horse you had already fallen in love with. 💞
Raise the container of the waterer for the cows, so that they can't 💩💩💩💩 in the water trough, raise it up, so that they can reach it... they've got long necks!
So sorry Lily … God feels your sadness. You and your family are taking all the right steps. To find the right pony for you. praying for the right pony to come your way. My Daughters barrel horse had kissing spine too he was young yet but did need to have surgery to alleviate his pain. several thousand $$$ later he is all recovered pain free and is having phenomenal barrel runs ! Trust and pray to God what you desire in a new horse. He knows your love and passion for horses and your riding ability is so good ! All good things take time
You did the right thing as heartbreaking it may be. Lily is learning along with us on identifying these things ahead of time. You and Rebekah did your due diligence as we know horses are quite the investment and Lily deserved to have a lifetime spent with her new horse.
Sweet Lily, I'm so sorry this wasn't the right horse. Keep the faith sweetheart, the right horse is out there and you will find him. Sending up prayers on your behalf, asking the good Lord to send the perfect horse for you.
Justin, take Lilly over to the THE FARM HOUSE TACK over in Tryon/Landrum. All the hunter jumper people around there go to that tack shop. See if they have some suggestions on who would be able to help Lilly find a great kids light competition hunter horse. The people there can be an excellent resource. Talk to the lady that owns the shop. Find the experts first, then tell them what you want and your budget range. Try to get 3-4 hunter people from this area of NC/SC looking for you. There are so many great horses perfect for Lilly here or at least the people will know who to talk to. I would also try to make your budget realistic for what you want. You want a horse younger than 14 years, healthy, great feet and legs, fully vetted with Tryon Equine Hospital. See if you can ask Dr. Emilie if she recommends any hunter trainers that work with kids. She's my vet and she's amazing.
Thank you so much for showing the PPE. That was so informative, and I'm sure it will be a useful resource as you continue to shop for a horse. The whole process was very interesting! You will find the right one. Every horse is a gamble.
I’m so sorry Lily! It’s so heartbreaking when you find an animal that you think would be perfect for you only to find out he needs some extra care! Praying the right horse is found for you soon! ❤️🩹
Love this video. Lily don't worry! You will find the perfect horse ! Thanks Justin for a fun video, and tell your son, he looks great with the hair cut! God bless you ! Happy Sabbath Day tomorrow!! Hmmm, any chance the wood chips could heat up enough to combust? Very close to the house. Ya’ll need a long handle net like a fishing net to catch those chickens. In your words, work harder not smarter. Always enjoyable content each and every video!
I bought a 7 year old ex race horse thoroughbred mare and she had kissing spine. We ended up having to put her down. I would look for a stockier hardy breed like a Clyde cross or Welsh cross. He is lovely natured but good on you for doing xrays, I spent $6000 trying to fix my $500 mare before she was put down.

I know you feel disappointed but the horse you are supposed to have will come. You are young and want to make sure you have the healthiest horse that will be around and your companion for years and years to come. I’m praying for you to find the most perfect horse for you💚
Oh I know what Lily is feeling. My first horse ended up coming down with Coggins and we had to have the vet put him down. This was in the early 70s. The poor guy had lost so many so many pounds of weight. He had an active case of it. But then my parents took me on a horse hunt like Lily is doing And the first one we liked the vet discouraged us from buying him. It’s heartbreaking and yet I couldn’t be more thankful for the mare I ended up with! Hang in there, Lily, the right one just for you is out there somewhere!
Oh Lily, I’m so sorry this horse didn’t work out! But trust me when I tell you, the pain you are feeling now is WAY less than what would happen down the line with a horse you hope to be sound to do anything but stand in your pasture. Ask me how I know. I am really impressed with your parents for making sure you did a pre-purchase exam. And that vet was REALLY good at his job. Please don’t be too discouraged, the right horse is definitely out there for you. You’re a very good rider, and if you’re looking for a horse to take you over 4ft courses, you need one who is VERY sound to start. Put the word out that you’re looking. Have your parents help you search for horses for sale in your area listed online. Touch base with any riding and boarding facilities in your area. Write a polite letter to the owner of any of those facilities telling them what you are looking for. Make a small ad to post on bulletin boards at all the tack and feed stores, riding and lesson barns, and show grounds nearby. You are fortunate to be in a part of the country where there are lots of horses. Don’t get discouraged! You will find one! I’m 65, and disabled myself, and I still have 3 horses here at our farm, but one is 34 years old and we’re going to have his final vet appointment in a few weeks. I was absolutely born addicted to horses, but wasn’t as lucky as you to live on a farm. I belonged to a girl scout sponsored riding program starting when I was 11 where I got to take 2 lessons a month. I also babysat, had a paper route, and did dog training and care to earn enough money to go to riding camp for a week each summer when I was 13, 14, and 15. I couldn’t afford my own horse until after I graduated college. I was fortunate to get a discount on my board by feeding and cleaning the barn 3 times a week. Anyway, trust that vet! Sometimes minor kissing spines might be OK for grandparents to have in their pasture for very young grandkids to sit on when they visit. But no one who wants to do any jumping AT ALL should consider it. I’ll be thinking lovely thoughts for you to find the right horse. 🫶🏼💕🫶🏼
Excellent vet and as a hunter jumper or cross-country whatever Lily wants to do this horse is definitely not for her. Keep searching and she will find the one that works with her and meets her requirements for Eventing
I'm so sorry Lily. You will find the right horse, I know it! I wanted a horse so bad that I I wanted an old nag, just because it was a horse. My dad asked me to wait. The next horse was the perfect horse! Be patient and you will be so happy when it's the right one!
A friend, ought here ‘dream’ horse several years ago, after year, the mare developed problems, kissing spine. It was so severe the horse had to be put down. You will find your heart horse, it just may take time. Use that time to develop your skills and knowledge. Best of luck
Sorry Lily, Ernie seemed like a good horse in every other way. It is all for the best for you and Ernie. Liked how the vet did not seem to be in a rush and explained everything. I found it fascinating, I would love to be his assistant but I'm too old and fat to be running around like that 🤣🤣
I bought a horse who was a little off but his hooves were long and the vet thought it was that. I didn’t pay for X-rays and it turned out he had navicular disease. 😔 I had had him for a year before his lameness was too much. I donated him the Davis CA vet school. They kept him medicated until he was used to teach surgery to students.
Lily, I know it's hard to not be excited getting a new horse, but like your dad said earlier "don't skimp on the education" research your needs and what to look for in a first "interview" when meeting a new horse. Maybe looking at your visit as an interview you can find a horse that can meet your standards and match your personality without a lot of disappointment. Good Luck!
Sweet girl I feel your disappointment. I had to learn the reason and that is "it wasn't meant to be" this time. Dry your tears, you will find the perfect horse. I know it's very upsetting. I recognize your strength ! The new horse will happen.
It would be much more heartbreaking to get so attached to a horse and have to let him go; in any form, than to deal with it now and pass him by. It takes time but there is a horse out there for dear Lily!
Lily we are keeping you in our prayers. Disappointment now is better than heartbreak later. You will find your perfect horse 🐎 enjoy the hunt.

Amazing vet, I'm sure if you pray God will help you find a great horse Lily❤
Dear Lily, you need a strong, healthy horse with lots of longevity. I hope you can recover from such a disappointment by knowing that horse needs a quiet life (he’s done his work ands needs some TLC) and then look forward to a horse that is the perfect partner for you💕🙏
Write down everything you are searching for in a horse and put it under your pillow 🥰
Lily I'm so sorry but its so GOOD that you had all the testing done. Great vet doing all the testing.... He's a beautiful horse and will find his perfect match but for you there is a very special horse waiting for you for your continued development in your riding skills...
Such a sweet horse though. I hope he finds a good home 🙏
Aw so sorry Lily. don't give up you will find that special horse you will love. Praying for you and that horse.
Vet is very thorough.
Jonah and Gideon really need Josiah’s haircut, get rid of the bowl!😂
All I think about is that I hope the owners of the horse take this new information and make adjustments for the horse!
Ahhh - when he was sore at that spot my first thought was kissing spine too. Good for you for doing the PPE. The right one will come along!
Lily I know the perfect horse is waiting for you. Praying for you 🙏❤
I remember horse shopping. It can be heartbreaking. But there is a perfect match out there for Ms. Lily. Keep your head up baby girl. Your future best friend is waiting for you to find them.
Poor Lily. She needs a good healthy horse. Glad you had a trust worthy vet.
That sucks! Was really hoping he was the right horse for Lily. 😢 She will find her right horse when it’s time! 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Keep the faith Lily, the right horse 🐎 will come soon! Happy Day! ❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🐎🐎
Cows need a higher water trough! No more poo. What a great vet with the horse
Aww Lily I’m so sorry. I am so sad for you. I am glad you have such supportive parents!
Raise the container of the waterer for the cows, so that they can't 💩💩💩💩 in the water trough, raise it up, so that they can reach it... they've got long necks!
Thank goodness for the man who did that PPE. Can't wait for your next prospect to come up Lily, it won't be long 💚
So sorry Lily … God feels your sadness.
Well done guys for checking because that would if been a huge issue moving forward. Her dream horse is out there ❤
I’m so sorry Lily!
We keep the new covenant Sabbath in Zion , where the Heavenly Jerusalem dwells and where all the feasts of God in the new covenant are observed.
Isaiah 33:20
Hebrews 12:22-25
Hmmm, any chance the wood chips could heat up enough to combust? Very close to the house. Ya’ll need a long handle net like a fishing net to catch those chickens. In your words, work harder not smarter. Always enjoyable content each and every video!
16:00 the look on her face 🤣🤣🤣... you were thinking right 😉 get another horse 🤣
It will happen Lily.. The right horse is out there... Shopping for horses is hard for the horsey girl who wants her dream horse. It will happen when you least expect it... We will all rejoice that day with you.. ❤🐎🫶🏼🩷
Much love.. The cat lady👩🏼🦳🐈🦮🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛ from the Oregon coast.. 🌀✨
I LOVE your haircut!! Very handsome!! 🤗🥰
Lilly I'm sorry he's not the horse for you. Trust me you will find the right horse. Just keep looking an think positive thoughts. I'm praying for you to find the right horse for you. ❤❤🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🐎
Poor Lily. Better to know the horse’s limitations before spending money to buy. Josiah welcome to the world of pumping gas.
Sorry Lily, Ernie seemed like a good horse in every other way. It is all for the best for you and Ernie. Liked how the vet did not seem to be in a rush and explained everything. I found it fascinating, I would love to be his assistant but I'm too old and fat to be running around like that 🤣🤣
You need to rebuild your boot rack. Those boots are a trip hazard plus they are out in the weather like that.
Prayers for sweet Lily. I hope the perfect horse comes along soon
I’m not certain but having a large mulch pile within a structure could be slightly risky. I’ve seen them spontaneously combust. Could be wrong though.
Oh Lily. I know how excited you were. But the next one will be worth the wait.
Awww Lily my heart breaks with you! I’m so sorry! Hugs from Ohio!
It would be much more heartbreaking to get so attached to a horse and have to let him go; in any form, than to deal with it now and pass him by. It takes time but there is a horse out there for dear Lily!
Freeze dry your milk after skimming the cream. Try building a raised platform for the cows water trough
Could someone tell me why they burn wood in the furnace outside. I am thinking to heat the house but I am not sure. 🤔
Yes...to heat the house
@gailkoprowski3177 Thanks👍😊
Awww. Hearing Lily cry squeezed my heart and made water shoot from my eyeballs.
