Did a job once they wanted everything dumped down the hill toward the yarder and left full length. It was steep ground and there were a lot of four and five foot spruce, putting boards in on the downhill side all day long to get the undercuts out, real pain. The yarding crew had runaways too, some of them pretty spectacular, four foot full length spruce out of the choker and picking up speed, landing guys scattering. One of those runaways came off the bank on the edge of the landing airborne and drove in under the mainline drum on the yarder, right next to the operator's cab. We had to buck it up and pull it out with the haulback. Exciting job

Nicely done. Thanks for sharing the angled back cut in the steep hill. Makes sense. Lower stump, keeps the wrap away from the ground.

Say whattt? I was a C Sawyer after 5 years of chainsaw experience under the belt. Est '92 💪 not actively a wildland firefighter now, but once in a while someone bets me $100 or $200 that I can't drop a tree on a stick sticking up out of the ground 50ft out from where the face cut is made. Rule was if I used a chainsaw wedge then I'd get $100. I never used a chainsaw wedge in said situation. A good size stick does the job just fine. For some reason people think domino felling trees is more fun 🤷‍♂️ might as well run a line of explosives instead. And oh how we miss the old Stihl 044s that we always ported🙏

It's a very fun job! Just don't ever get overconfident in your abilities because it'll bite you in the butt...or kill you 🙃 There's nothing like hearing a tree fall in the right place for the right reason. I remember having to take down a tree in a local area. Had to be a 100+ year old Red Oak, struck by lightning TWICE, and we were called out to take it down because the neighbors had some twigs on their roof once in awhile 😐
It was a healthy tree and had been kept trimmed but city ordinances & laws dictated it be taken down. We roped a LOT of limbs down before my boss did the final cut. When he started cutting that wedge, the tree started gushing sap like an artery had been cut... because it was. I actually got teary eyed about it TBH.
I felt that SOB fall and I'm sure the entire subdivision did. Felt that WHOOSH. I kept a 3' long section of a branch, well over a foot in diameter, and I'm sitting on it now 3+ years later.
Sorry to ramble here but I loved that job 👍

@@k.a.8494 no worries, that's an awesome but sad story. Glad to hear it, these videos have always come across my various feeds and i feel like it's something that's calling to me because I love being out in the forests. Have always loved climbing tree as a kid and have zero fear of heights. It always just seems like something right up my alley.

So much has changed since I worked summers in logging. Back then, the fallers bucked everything and had to limb three sides of the log. This was cat logging and working the landing meant you had to get any limbs or big knots remaining so the loader could get a tight load.
