    You might not fix things to start with, but then you will, and your confidence and experience will grow.

      Another good use for just a cheap infrared temperature gun, is battery banks. Like used for solar/wind electricity storage. You point it at each terminal post and where you get a higher reading tells you you've got resistance and you need to clean the terminal/battery post. Sometimes its the interconnect jumper cable terminals. Its a quick way of checking the battery connections. To further pin point the problem you can put your meter on DCV and one meter probe on the actual lead battery post and the other probe on the terminal itself. You should have 0 volts. If there's a difference of potential, (a voltage reading) then you've got resistance and need to clean the connection.

    My guess as to why it's easier to strip with the flush cutters facing backwards: If you look at how the blades are shaped, you'll see that they're flush on the back (hence the name) and tapered on the front. If you use the cutters "forwards" then due to the angle of the blades, a part of the force will be directed downwards into the wire, essentially pushing the isolation under the blade, causing it to slip. If you use them "backwards", the blades will be perpendicular to the wire and all of the force will be directed towards stripping the isolation from the wire.

    Wouldn't be surprised if the glue was also a problem. It can become conductive, and if it was part of the issue, removing components would break/crack the glue removing the conductive path. Watch out for the yellow (Ados?) glue on PCB's. It's the worst. Easy to check that with an ohm meter before disturbing components. 50yrs in the trade, and now as a hobby, it's fun to get something from earlier times dropped off for repair.

    Be sure to check the supplied plug adapter for ground continuity if you buy the linked desoldering gun. Mine was not connected. the Chinese power cord that came with it was absolutely fine and so was the ground continuity from the tip of the gun to the socket on the device. It's easy to restore the full ground continuity. Just swap out the Chinese power cord for one suitable for your own region. If I'm not mistaken the thing is multi-voltage, but it is only marked like that on the power supply inside, not on the outer shell, so please check that first.

    To stop shrink tube shrink during soldering a short wire, slip a bare solid #14 awg “ish” wire under the shrink tubing, along the short wire. After soldering, pull the bare wire out. There should still be enough clearance to slip the shrink tube over the solder joint.

    I learned electronics with a Philips Electronic experimental kit (late 1970s) which led me to my first professional education 1984 as Radio & TV service technician in the 4-man workshop of a local electronic distributor which delivered small electrician shops with electronic components & kits, devices, antennas and installation material, also some special jobs were done (manufactored speaker boxes, PCBs for lab power supply, alarm & video monitor system).
    After that I studied electrical engineering specialized on technical informatics comparable with computer engineering (1990), working on measurement acquisition (and control) software development, later software build- & test-systems (QA).

    Richard, it is much easier to strip the wire with the flat bottom of the cutters because the top edge has a rather steep bevel, which acts like a wedge working against you in all ways. The wedge shape forces the blades apart (as you push on the insulation) causing the need for more pressure applied, which only compounds the fact that the wedge shape will naturally squeeze the insulation against the wire.
    The flat side of the cutters mates up to the flat end of the cut in the insulation where the only direction of force is pushing the insulation off.

I've never really learned how to use Ohms as a testing measure... Maybe someday you can do a video on it as opposed to using 'continuity' and how and why Ohms is a main go-to method for you? When I saw that amplifier is doing the sound like an oscilation when you increased volume I said to myself that time that there should be a capacitor fault because started oscilation when volume was increasing. If was the chip, I think most of the time would oscilate continuously till would explode without modify volume (opinion of a beginner in electronics).

    4. Электролитические конденсаторы в сигнальных цепях это то что сразу надо менять на новые, особенно если устройству лет 5-10, и оно еще дополнительно пару лет провалялось выключенным. Выпаивать и измерять смысла нет, при пайке они нагреваются и при измерении они обманут. Стоят они копейки, менять сразу, соблюдая емкость, и желательно хоть немного сформировать, чтобы избежать больших утечек.

    From 42:00 onwards in the video. The capacitors of the amplifier can be easily tested without removing them from the circuit board. I mean the method where the tip of the soldering iron is used to heat the capacitor casing. If the sound improves/changes, you have found the bad one.

    Seems to me the amplifier chip is oscillating at a high frequency. That would explain the strange sounds and the burnt up resistor (-s, probably in the zobel network)

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  ปีที่แล้ว

      The burnt up resistors (one on the PSU board the other on the volume control board) only supply zener diodes which provide lower regulated voltage rails purely to supply current to the LED indicators as far as I can see.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair

      It's working fine now -so it must be single supply, also I think the datasheet for the bass amp chip said it was single supply rail actually though I didn't pick up on that at the time. The stuff I was talking about on bridged amplifiers still applies to single supply rails.

    Those PC speaker systems are often so full of hot glue, silicone paste and mounting glue they become very hard to work on. It will be interesting to see if this fixes the problem or if the stressed caps were a result of an underlying issue. Those two cooked resistors are shocking design flaws.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the cooked resistors were horrible. As mentioned they only exist to feed zener diodes that then feed a stable voltage to the power indicator LEDs (one front one rear) through a current limiting resistor. Worse thing that would happen if they fail, apart from the thing catching on fire, is one or both of the power LEDs would not work.

    • @ElectricBillAlbright
      @ElectricBillAlbright ปีที่แล้ว

      In switching power supplies they use those blue colored flame proof resistors as a protective fuse. They're usually a low ohm value like 2 ohms. The trouble is when you got something with a resistor that is now literally a piece of carbon! 😅 No schematic, how do you determine the value for a replacement. If you're good at reverse engineering or engineering period may be you could figure it out. 😉 Then again, if you had that kind of knowledge, you'd probably throw it away and get a new one! Lol 🤣 😆

  • @theshemullet

    On your capacitance meter, are the little holes that say, cx+ and cx- used to just stick the capacitor legs in and test; or are they for something else?

    • @theshemullet
      @theshemullet ปีที่แล้ว

      Secondary question. Is the ESR reading on a component theater any use, compared to the dedicated device. I'm guessing not, it would like to see how close it is

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theshemullet No not the same at all - a dedicated ESR tester can do all sort of things such as measure inductors and find short circuit Mosfets in VRMS. The ones in a component tester can not.

    My dear Richard ... a note because it seems like YT is mental when it comes to audio or video copyright, many channels have had their videos removed because they passed music from a radio station ... sad to say but that has been the case for this platform.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
      @LearnElectronicsRepair  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which is one reason why I use obscure rare records from the 1960s that have hardly been anywhere near a commercial radio station, and I also play the audio directly from, guess what, a TH-cam channel video - so the audio is coming from TH-cam itself. Common sense says that is not a problem, otherwise TH-cam would not allow me to watch the original video I am playing in the background in the first place th-cam.com/video/A-c_veZrmiE/w-d-xo.html
      The other better reason is because I love northern soul and have since the 70s

      @@LearnElectronicsRepair That's the way to go! I would like to repair a set of cables for a car battery jump starter (lithium). My daughter connected the crocodile clamps the wrong way round on her car and although they are supposed to be protected with a light for reverse connection they dont work anymore. There are only few components including 3 small capacitors , 1 chip and and a large black cube which resembles a relay that you would get in a car fuse box. (However its not a pull out like in a car). Anybody have any advice or direct me to a tutorial please? Shame I cant upload photos.

    Love your videos. I learn a lot from them, and maybe it's me, but in this video you're not showing so well, what you're talking about. Example at 28:00, when you discover the burnt resistor and Zener diode, you're moving the board around so quickly, it's hard to see what you're talking about. I'm not trying to troll you, just constructive criticism.
