- Jocko’s back in the workshop because it's finally time to add some 4WD mods to his stock N70 Hilux!

Now it's time for the fun stuff, Jocko takes the N70 out bush for a torture test to see how far you can push a stock 4WD offroad before you start adding mods like suspension, wheels and lockers. Leave a comment about how your 4x4 builds are going and if you have any mechanical hacks and tips!

A great video mate, I dare say a lot of people myself included don’t have a lot of money, have an IFS ute and just want to see how far it goes without breaking something but upgrading small pieces bit by bit. A great way to connect with a lot of your viewers in very similar situations, well done.
Certain breakages are just gunna happen. Carry a cv and some u joints and things like that that are not super expensive and more prone to breaking

@@swampypolitics9574 been wheeling a stock 2007 hilux. Never done a cv, cvs break when they are under to much pressure from mainly drivers error, whether it’s driving like an idiot or trying to drive some thing to hard for the car, or lifting the ifs to much without a diff drop.
I think that taking a stock vehicle wheeling before upgrading is a must! Not only do you see where you need to make changes first… but also it teaches you how to pick a line on obstacles. That the reason I love this channel. Graham is right there with the highly modded rigs but with a little line picking he can go right with them!! Great channel for learning and always entertaining!!!

I have been skipping some video's on this channel lately and I must say this video was super interesting. Watching the team do hard tracks weekly has not hit the spot with me lately and always find video's very interesting regarding tyres and general product or vehicle reviews,especially becasue the guys are super knowledgeable.

IMO tyres should probably be one of your first mods. Everyone is always obsessed with getting the biggest tyres possible, but most dual-cabs will fit a 31-32" tyre on stock suspension and rims, and a decent-priced AT (or even cheaper MT) will get you a LOT further than those HTs while you're building up funds for other mods.
Yup, just tyres not even wheels really. You can get yourself a lift by just putting bugger tyres on than from factory and with more grip which will let ya go further
I have just snuck mine up to 32's (ish) with a 2 inch lift. Simply because going up to 33's will be burning fuel and increasing driveline stress for the 60-70% i use it on paved roads. It just doesnt make sense, and it gets me anywhere i have tried to go
Can even get cheap as MT/AT and throw them on some steelies. Change over when heading out. Saves fuel and they will last ages.

Thanks Jocko - I bought my N70 Diesel Auto early Feb 2020 just before Covid for 18k (yes I know what you’re thinking) - it had low kms, spotless duco and interior with factory bullbar, ARB canopy and ARB tow bar - I’m a solo touring cyclist in Australia and discovered the practicality (water access) and common sense (security) of touring the outback with a vehicle compared to my easy 6 mth treks through Europe - this ute has been amazing as a standard ‘light” off-roader and tourer for my needs - the ARB canopy and tub have now been replaced with 1600mm canopy because unlike you I’m short in stature and had trouble reaching into the side windows and over the rear tailgate - I’ve fitted ‘truck’ spec A/T tyres, Safari snorkel and that’s all I need - a NSW/QLD chap on Gumtree made a roof console fully lined to suit this model for around $280.
Like the idea of dropping parts you don't need in the dry run and replace or upgrade all that survived or scraped through 😀

You're a very good presenter. Probably the best out there in the 4wd/off-road segment. Your explanation is logical, easy to follow and even I can understand. Good job!

Great video! Looking forward to future installments. This is exactly how I built my truck (yes I am in the states) - start with small items I knew would be necessary then test to learn what else would be required. Rinse and repeat... An added benefit of doing it this way is it allowed me time to budget and save and remain debt free. Thanks for the great content over the years!

👍 I'm in USA, and have followed that "line" of mods for my last 2 Jeeps. I quit " keeping up with the Jones" on lifting mods and what not. I stopped on 33-35 in. tire sizes when "who's who" was moving to 38s - 40s ect. Many local trails quit being fun, let alone more parts wearing out more often. Sticking with 33-35 tires with gear change and lockers my MPG's didn't take the hit surprisingly on XJ.

Took my stock Ranger off-roading. First thing I broke was side steps - 1 ripping it off in a mud puddle and 1 bashed by a rock. Rock sliders were the first mod!
Mind you, it went pretty ok offroad. It was quite fun anyway!
I'll be curious to see how you handle touring storage with daily driver space.
We don't have the luxury of multiple 4wds, so the one vehicle has to be a daily driver and also accommodate us on trips. I'm considering putting in some tie down rails rather than drawers. Keep all the room in the back, and then store everything in canvas bags we can just strap or net down.
But also have a 90 series, so a lot less room than a ute.

Hey Joko, thanks for the video. At minute 7:12, why go in the ruts? By 7:00 minutes you avoid the ruts. On the end of the video you know how to change the line.
at 7:55 minutes: You dont need a suspensionlift. A lift dont make more room in the wheelarches by cross up the axles. Your limit is still the factory bumpstop on up travel. You have this new build. Try it out. Fit 33" and test where the tires rub. Install a lift and test again. For your IFS is a lift a lift, you get more groundclearens.

One thing I found with my N70 is a full length slide in the tub has made camping so much easier. I picked up a set of 1500mm runners on special order from Bunnings an I built as a split draw system with a ute sized draw. The second battery goes behind the draw. Also measure how high where you keep your car as well as your place of works parking.
No point in driving a to work and not be able to park in the works under cover parking.

Hey Jock love the concept of the build as its what i have done to my Paj. Think you got it wrong with the radio mike mount however. One of the reasons you get that style is because the controls and channel/volume screen info is on the hand piece. When touring you are often switching between channels and or turning the volume up and down (there are some conversations you your partner or kids just don't need to hear) . it is good to be able to see the info on the screen easily and be able to adjust things with the mike on the mount. I have mine high up on the dash just to the side of the left driver vent. I can scan down from the road and up easily to see the screen and can operate the controls without leaning forward in my seat or having to pick up the handset. Give it a go and see.

So I’ve got the same stock hylux I added a 100 ltr fridge made a cage for it out of an old screen door light and works epic have 1 titan draw 12 volt system peddler 2 inch lift and constant 300 in the rear. And a snorkel a/t tyres on original rims no bar work yet although there is literally thousands I want to spend to get it where I’m happy. I’d love a rear locker also and a full canopy set up. But it’s just a lot of money

Nice video Jock. Mates with these have fitted RG Colorado leafs on the rear ( couple of hundred bucks on Marketplace ) and fitted extended shackles, shocks and brake lines for some impressive rear articulation.
Pity you pushed it a little too far on that trip. Nice dent to the RHS sill. 😁👍

My wife and I have done an awful lot in a standard 2003 Hilux with Cooper AT3 tryes. The Snowys, the Simpson and lots of other non-"name places". There are so often alternative routes near an obstacle that suit stock cars. Best "mod" - have a playground with a ton of different lines and different sorts of obstacles and spend time going from easy to hard and improve your technique and car control. Practice doesn't need to be a chore!

IFS is great. Once they're lifted on larger tires, the lack of front pumpkin and smooth skid plates really lets them slide over obstacles.

Drove my N70 up Billy Goats and Blue Rag with it stock. Only mods were snorkel and All Terrains. Mind u I do prefer the 2” and bullbar with winch and sliders I have now. Lol enjoyed the vid Jock. 👍🏻
Hi Jock, loving this series I bought as near duplicate N70 in Jan 2023 . Just put a winch on and heading to Fraser next week with my wife and camper trailer.for a week. Loved the previous engine mods hope to have those done in 2nd 1/4 of this year. Also up graded to EC Offroad head unit great to have apps at fingertips. Look forward to future instalments.

Hey Jocko, you have the pony and the other luxxy for tough tracks.
Build a pure tourer. Would like to see how a younger person builds a tourer.
In a tourer, as i am planning on building a touring rig, multiple small water containers is better than one large one. Can move the weight around the chassis making the weight more even, and if one container gets contaminated, you still have other water sources.
Plan ahead. What are your vision requirements around the car? What items do you want access less regularly, but easily after getting out of the car? What side will you most put towards your campsite and what will you want access to easily at camp? For me itll be the right side (drivers). So food and shelter will be that side. The offside would be recovery and power.
As a someone who will be looking at a similar hilux soon to use for work, play & touring I’d love to see an in-depth tray back conversion (live in the UK where traybacks are near non-existent, but my time in Aus on the farms I fell in love with them)
I will be looking to do a tray back conversion and have a canopy for all my tools that is easily jacked off at the job site so I have the tray free
cool almost my mods.
Started with bumper (rhine evolution) front and rocksliders (handmade from poland).
Next was winch bashplate (frontrunner, had to modify cause of bad fit) and in thereafter a 2" lift (OME rear and kings front with 4 ToughDoug dampeners. 350+ kg set). Recently i've chosen slightly bigger tyres 32.2" on steelies (Dotz Dakar 7j et20 r17, Cooper st maxx 275/70R17) and chucked in a plate for gearbox.
Here in europe it gets me anywhere, it is my daily.

Bullbar, tyres, winch, suspension, roof platform, 12v setup, front mount, snorkel, UHF, tune, etc etc. not cheap

Body lift. It's one of the cheapest mods I did to fit bigger tires. I rarely hear it mentioned. Is it an aussie thing to not do it? The 2" body lift made all kinds of wonders for me.
Bigger tires fits now.
I could move my intercooler 2" up away from the hot engine with homemade spacer.
The hot exhaust sits further away from the cab floor.
Wrenching on the car is easier with less tight spaces.
Inspecting the frame is easier when you can see and reach the top of it.
Sills sit higher off the ground and frame with more clearance for sliders.
No suspension geometry altered.
I did it on a Nissan D22. I lifted it 2" for about $250. I would do it again.

There's a small company called Tooheys Engineering that makes inserts for those storage pockets on the dash to allow the mounting of a UHF mic.
You said in the video that the only way to fit bigger tyres is to fit a supsension lift, but that isn't true on an IFS, whatever you can fit on a four inch lift will also fit on stock suspension because the arms move through the same arc of travel. You're much better off keeping the lift to the bare minimum, and fitting 32's for a daily driver (33's work as well, but require more clearance work, and for your style of driving would require a change of diff ratios to maintain good gearing for off road). you would require upgraded shocks to control the bigger tyres though.
i just like what they do and the cars they drive and the the tracks i’m only new to this though(saturday new) and it’s all i watch now
How much did putting that Bullbar (and winch) on the front decrease the clearance on stock springs? Somehow I doubt it would have helped.

Not even gonna lie. I have no money for anything, barely scraped up enough for a hand held uhf set and recover rope. But despite been stock as a rock, road tires included my triton is remarkably capable in most basic offroad areas. Not gotten stuck yet and id probably put that down to judgment but still slot of fun and gives me ideas for whats next. 😊
Keep the anti-roll bar in the rear, helps the front to really "flex" on an ifs 👍👍
We’ve got an amarok with 32” all terrains, it’s centre and rear locked stock and it is so capable, really underrated
I did the Maytown Track in a Nav D40 with a bull bar, winch and ATs, no suspension lift, no lockers, no sliders. Crazy, possibly, but no damage. That included going up to the ‘pub’ location above THAT rock step. It is possible to get a reasonably standard dual cab through some tough tracks, but it is hard work with big risks.

One question I do have, is changing tyres really taking it away from stock? I understand if you were to get bigger tyres it would be, but if you got all terrain tyres the same size as what’s on there, is that really taking it away from being stock?
yeah i would say so, because generally you dont buy them from the showroom with AT tyres standard which is stupid.

With the lack of finances, the best i could do on my Isuzu frontier was new engine and gearbox mountings, new cab rubbers (between body and chassis), and bigger rims and tyre.
Thinking this will make for a better ride, this only showed me that my suspension is shot 😂

yeah I think a rear bar might be 3rd on the list after the rock sliders considering the near miss with the bank between the 1st and 2nd winchers lol, but question when it comes down to lockers which line do you think you'll be going down e-locker or air locker with the budget lux

Owning a 2005 N70 1KD hilux, but with a steel tray, the first mods i did where phatbars bashplates and transmission bashplate 6years later never busted a CV its unlocked so i have done a few sendy bois getting up some good narly hills, drive the right way and some common sense and it will treat you very well (but at the end of the day its a touring 4wd not a rockcrawler ahah)

I took my stock 2002 hilux sr5 2.7 petrol from Brisbane to cape York Tele track and Frenchman’s last year 2022, and it didn’t miss a beat, the only time I needed help was the soft bottom of cannibal creek.
330,000 plus klms on the clock.

Maybe steel rims, if wheel is deformed, just use hammer or a rock and u can keep driving. And aluminum rims usualy cracks, and needs profesional welding. Thank you guys for awesome conent, i watch and enjoy every single video. 😉

Got a stock ‘05 Jeep WK Grand Cherokee with a V8 hemi, all stock (KO2 tires on it).
While I would LOVE to gove it a 3-4 inch lift and some 33s, it gets me where I need currently. Definitely still plan on doing upgrades but $$ is an issue atm sadly
Must sound good with the hemi mate! You might be able to get away with a 2 inch lift and 33s? It would handle much better on the road

Thanks buddy, I've been thinking what mod i can do with my stock ute and i"m thinking to invest on rock slider because i'm always bend my sidesteps and I'm kinda afraid to lift my car thinking of being unable to use shopping mall basement park which is have 2.3 meter limit height or you gonna risk your roof being scrapped on the ceiling.
When you get used to owning a capable 4wd, it truely shocking how terrible stock 4wds are in the bush lol I have to remind myself a lot in the work Ute

I reckon a tray with some dog boxes would be a good touring setup but would be light enough to keep the weight down

Watch maccas video on his N80 hilux, the coil conversion in the rear drastically increased the capability of the rig.

I got n70 all I have is 32s with twin lockers an witch 2 inch lift goes really well
I want to manufacture my own sliders so would love to see the details of the sliders you put on, tube Dia, leg thickness that sort of stuff
So what level of damage did you do on the drivers side rear quater when you winched? See the camera angle quickly changed!?
I recently got a 08 n70 with a little bit done to it I would think a transmission cooler would be a good buy , as I’ve overheated mine a few times even with a service my auto didn’t like a long day on the tracks
