I had the pleasure to ride with the class 43 in this livery In May 2019, two weeks before they were replaced. 1982 I went on BR one from Kings Cross to York. Had a Sunday roast in the diner. Not bad for a Swedish resident!
Growing up with the Pacers, 150, 156, 158s and HSTs and seeing them all disappear is disheartening. I'm starting with TfW on Monday, so I'm grateful that I'll be able to work at least two of these trains before they're all replaced by 197s and tram trains.
The TfW 197s are good but only 1 toilet per Unit is disgusting.
i’m from the west midlands with the 323s as my trains, i’m only 18 now however when the new 730s come in ill be upset when the last 323s are cascaded off to northern or scrapped, might even cry. i’m excited for the future but will miss the present when its the past.
Well said Megasim. It will be very sad when the last HSTs go. And unfortunately I believe that the trains that replace these will not perform the job quite as well - either in terms of capacity like you said or speed.
I saw a fgw hst. It was the only the power car. No carriages. And beside it was a class 101 in green livery and a few steam trains left beside an old disused station. Strange...
Such a shame with them leaving GWR - I think GWR are getting more 5 car IET's to replace them. 150's/158's/166's are not enough capacity unless they use 6 car sets all the time which they never do anymore btw, especially on the Cardiff - Penzance corridor.

It will be a shame to see the 43’s gone. But also why can’t they do what they are doing to the 314 or old tube stock and replace Diesel with hydrogen, but on a bigger scale for the HST’s

Our depot is slowly clearing out the FGW HST's to make way for these sadly and just 3 are left at our depot now

It is sad that the HST's are finally going.. It was really Britain's last home-engineered and world acclaimed diesel locomotive, and, you could argue that the HST was the last successful home-engineered train... (I know the Class 158 had oversees sales too...). And to be fair, even though that the IET's are going to be 'worthy' replacements, they are made in Japan and assembled in the UK. I guess we Brits just don't make 'things' anymore? I've only ever been on a HST once and that was with National Express East Coast Service between Wakefield and London Kings X.
If there was a public outcry to the decision to withdrawl the class then maybe they can be kept into service until they turn 50. Also Gwr said next couple of years 16 this year rest we don't know when there getting withdrawn but with GWR having a severe stock shortage they might just keep them in service into 2024 when they might no longer be able to scrap the class.
I thought all GWR will be gone by December. It was a stopgap in itself so lasted a long time, but will be missed!!

Yes, there are some on heritage railways (125 group) plus midland Pullman etc.
What are your recommendations for seeing the hsts (near London) I thought maybe Bristol temple meads but idk.
Yea Bristol temple meads, you can see GWR and XC (certain times of day) is a good place

I’m planning to get the Great Western Express. Does the route include 2 trains?
Yes the class 43 hst and the 166 networker. If you wondering there is a issue with the route as people say by the time you reach your max speed you have to slow down very quickly.

The GWR 43 has already retired services from London Paddington
And will retire completely in December 2023
@@WaschiXtreme 16 of them will be withdrawn aren't there 24. Also gwr have stuffed up as they cancelled getting those class 739 flexs plus there replacing the hsts with voyagers from avanti coast which I think is a downgrade. So this might be just me or is Gwr having financial problems, bad choices or network rail and DFT are being brats.

Is the voyager comment official? Not sure that was happening? The IETs will take over more of the routes plus the 158s but there will probably be less services and an uncomfortable ride ☹️
