Eric, Thanks for this test. Man, you are right, there just isn't enough of a price delta between these and the AFR's to justify the cost savings. I just got a set of 65cc 195 comp's for my 383 crawler motor. I fully disassembled them, measured, CC'd, etc. Their quality (at least at the time of this typing) is pretty damn good. Like you said, as of right now, the AFR's actually seem like a bargain (PAC springs, good valves, seals, seats, and guide clearances that are actually correct). I don't have any buyers remorse, -and as an added bonus, they have been more than helpful when I called them. My heads were cast at the Edelbrock facility (thanks to me watching one of your other videos), but I have seen firsthand their latest castings from cheener, -and you are right, -they look better than the Edelbrock castings. Cheener has castings down, but their machine work, -quality of the rest of the components, and the lackluster QC at this price point further solidifies my purchase from AFR (machined, assembled with quality components, and QC'd in the USA -and someone who answers a damn phone!). Thanks for all you do, I appreciate it!
Great video! Got to appreciate someone who is a straight shooter. I can't believe people actually have the nerve to compare the Promax and AFR heads. I am just a brodix casting guy. I been running them since the 90's and I've always been happy. I tried 2 off brand companies on real budget builds and was real disappointed and never again. I rather buy a cheap brodix or profiler and support American made and have better quality.. I looked at those heads for awhile for my 406 sbc.I ended up going much smaller to AFR 195.Very happy for just $200 more.Great video thanks again.Been waiting for this one.
I watched a video once where they built a 406 sbc and they topped it off with AFR 195 heads and a Performer RPM intake. The engine had a very mild hydraulic roller cam with 230/234 duration. The engine made 540HP and 550TQ. Such an impressive combo for a street-driven deal. You made the right choice my friend.

The Promaxx 200cc head you flowed a while back are pretty much identical up to .500 lift both intake and exhaust side. From .600 up these 225's are roughly 10-15 cfm better intake side only. Seems like the 200's would make close power with better throttle response all for a few hundred $$ less.

A question every customer needs to ask himself, when the engine is up and running, was it worth saving a grand on heads to make 25, 50, 100 less horsepower?
Very true, but Like Eric pointed out, it isn't just about the flow numbers or net power potential. There isn't even a grand to be saved on these versus a set of AFR's. It is also about the quality of the rest of the components. An engine is always a big investment (at least if it's done right), and dropping a valve or a seat will certainly cost you more than a set of heads. I would hate to grenade a nice block and reciprocating assembly because I saved $550 on a set of heads, -including the power you would be leaving on the table. One word, -NOPE! Thank you Eric!
I had a set of these heads on my kart for a customer bulld when you posted this video. I ran them over to another machine shop and had them flowed and he came up with damn near the same numbers you did, at no point did they break 295 cfm, they were just about 10% below every lift point that was advertised except .400 where it was 20%. I called Promaxx and asked what was going on and the guy pleasantly told me that I flowed them on a 4 inch bore which I hadn`t, he didn`t say send them back or anything of the sort, I dynoed the motor and sure enough it made 600HP on pump gas at 6500 rpm and 577 ft/lbs. with a small hyd roller. My customer was happy which made me relieved. You`re right it aint a bad head but its not a great one. either. I have a question, can they be fixed? or would you have to port them over from scratch?

You help the world go round and it blesses god. Thanks a ton from all of us, i am sure i speak for them, all of us, also when i say that.
i dont have a huge budget so after seeing some good information I went with Promaxx Project X 185. Now Im worried the flow numbers might not be as theyre showing. have you flowed any Project X heads? sounded like you thought they looked pretty good. what do you think of thsse?
It seems that most people of the world make the mistake of thinking that cylinder head flow is what you look for in a cylinder head. Of course all of the manufacturers know this and therefore want to elevate the values which you clearly illustrated here. You, of course, brought up the big issue with the plug being over exposed, risking preignition but there's another big consideration for me. The way say it is that cylinder head flow does not equate to cylinder filling. Put another way, if you have high flow from a really large valve, compared to a little bit less flow from a much smaller valve, the lower flowing cylinder head with the smaller valve will murder the higher flowing head with a larger valve under many circumstances. I realize there is a point which the lower velocity might help but it will require enough RPM to justify the lower velocity, caused by the using the larger valve. There are a number of equations that I've seen but being a linear equation, the easiest method I use for comparing is simply flow/ valve diameter. Some like to calculate the area of the valve but using the only the diameter will illustrate the differences more easily and quickly. For those that aren't familiar with this method of looking at cylinder heads, it's referred to as the "coefficient of discharge". I've often gone with smaller valves because I wasn't moving enough air to justify the larger ones. This falls along the same lines as people running camshafts that are too big. That's an age-old problem too.
There is a head that is a copy of the AFR, appears to be similar or the same as the older 210cc CNC flow numbers. Externally I doubt you'd pick the difference besides the obvious engraving being changed to No-flow, I mean Aeroflow. it is the. Aeroflow 213 cnc head that I'm talking about. put that on your bench, they're about a quarter to a third of the price of AFR here in Australia.
Those blue seals suck for boost applications. The boost comes up the valve stem and push’s them off and those littles around the top of them come off and go thru the motor.
I would like to see a comparison on the casting material strength as to not strip and not warp, etc.... not to mention batch to batch consistency.(even just weight of bare heads). More times than not, product from China will change (for the worse) at time goes on. cutting corners and using tooling far past it's cycle is always a issue to consider. I notice most China products get worse over time, almost never better....
When you flow the heads, do you know if temperature and humidity make much difference and do you have to correct for this? just playing around with my own home made bench and wondered if this is something i need to correct for
Hey Eric , I am building a pro street S10 blazer for a customer with a 383sbc. He bought the 64cc chamber version of those heads. Promaxx 200cc 2.02 64cc 4.030 Bore 240 @ 0.400 270 @ 0.600 On your bench. If you are going to buy Promaxx I don't see the Shockers as being cost effecrive. For the typical under 0.600 flat tappet bracket cam I think the 200 would be a better value for a 355 or 383. But since the Brodix IK 200 (admittedly needs a little more minor cleanup) is no more expensive why buy Chinese?
@@WeingartnerRacing just kidding. You mentioned the best catfish you ever had. I made a bad joke I guess. Texas Roadhouse had a great catfish meal but they dropped it due to lack of demand. Very disappointed.
Many things keep the catfish from becoming popular nationwide. First it is a fish with no scales. So in turn many religions speak against eating it. Secondly the catfish is like a carp. It feeds and mainly resides on the bottom of its waterscape. So there brings with it a muddy taste in the meat. Though I am like you, I like it now that I'm older. My second cousin that was much older than I taught me that if you take carp or catfish and soak the meat in a bowl of salt water for 24 hours it will draw the muddy taste out of the fish.
Can’t be ported more. It would better to do the project x heads.
Hey Eric,
So with those flow numbers how much more duration would you run on the exhaust to compensate? Thanks Dennis ✌️
I appreciate your videos . I been to Tulsa a few times as I use to work for a utility company that has a class there .. I give the cat fish a try if I in the area .. thanks
Great video Eric, thanks for sharing.
Now the question is, Why is the as Cast 200cc so good and the CNC 225 so bad????
Good to know. Thanks Eric.
Great video! Thanks again Eric!
Thanks for info I payed $1200 for new set back in 2020
what about promaxx project X heads 185cc does it match listed flow numbers with the 3/4" intake plate , 4.06" bore and 1&3/4" pipe? it is showing. And how do they compare to their 183cc MaXX series ? didn't know if you have already done these or not. Hey eric thanks soo much for your great works and compilations, it is really helping the people's economy and the world of racing, hot rodding, and cool cars inginuity. You help the world go round and it blesses god. Thanks a ton from all of us, i am sure i speak for them, all of us, also when i say that.
I’m still waiting to get a set to test. When I do I will make a video.
Those ports are so big, you could fit 3 fingers in there! Wait ..."shocker" heads?🤔🤣🤣🤣
I was thinking those flow numbers they advertised seemed alittle optimistic. What's the price on them CNCd 225s?
i dont have a huge budget so after seeing some good information I went with Promaxx Project X 185.
Looks like pretty good heads but they need some r&d on the cnc program
What's the best afr head for a blown street strip 350 sbc ?
Love your videos
You ever flow a CNC 220 Flotek head? 320 @ .700 supposedly
Wonder if anyone goes back and looks at comments.
Go look at the new 215 promaxx project C heads he tests. They flow more than these.
Do you think these heads would do ok with some boost? Maybe 15lbs with a turbo setup?
Hello Eric, Could you please explain how you would fit a set of headers to the the exhaust ports (10.13+ vid time) on these heads. Thank you.
The boost comes up the valve stem and push’s them off and those littles around the top of them come off and go thru the motor.
good use of those free flash lights lol
Hi Eric
What would you suggest would be the best head to use on a LS 434 with a supercharger or NA
All Ferrera Valves have the part number on the valve stem. If they don't, send them back to where they came from.
Valves in the last 2 years or so do not always have them. In fact I'd say it's only old stock ones that do.
Great info on that head!
I know you don't port iron heads, would you flow one?
Yes
Do you ever do port designs and or work on sbc superstock heads?
Great video!
When you flow the heads, do you know if temperature and humidity make much difference and do you have to correct for this? just playing around with my own home made bench and wondered if this is something i need to correct for
On an orfice bench you don’t have to. However my shop is climate controlled.
Great information
Did you flow the edelbrock 210?
Whats the best size primary for a 421? 13.5 ps. Thank you!
Hi Eric I have PRC 225 Heads do you have a Video of them ,,,,,,I thought I was buying some of thee BesT
I have only seen them at the trade shows. They look good. Someday I will get a set through the shop.
Hey Eric I am building a pro street S10 blazer for a customer . he bought the same,225cc shocker head but in a 64cc chamber. Do you think the 64cc
Hey Eric , I am building a pro street S10 blazer for a customer with a 383sbc. He bought the 64cc chamber version of those heads. Do you think the 64cc chamber version would flow alittle better then the 72cc? Also this engine will be supercharged with a 10psi torque storm . Your thoughts appreciated. And thank you for sharing your knowledge, with us.,if helps to make the right choices. Wished you lived closer to Maryland..Stay Frosty..
How do they compare to the Brodix they copy?
The Chinese heads have seats in them that remind me of the Yamaha ATVs. Very similar 🤔
Have you checked the Brodix IK-200 64cc heads ?
Yes they are in a different video.
Eric How do you measure and calculate the area above the short side?
It’s usually rectangular in shape so length times width at apex then remove corner radius. For ease I didn’t remove corner radius for video.
@@WeingartnerRacing Thanks!
Can you A flow test on the AFR enforcer cylinder heads 195
I did a video on it. You just have to search.
What's your favorite sbc head?
American
Does this head have raised exhaust port?
Will sleep better at night with AFR
I just got mine in the mail and I put them in the bed next to me.Your right I had the best sleep of my lift.Content.
Good stuff.......
Promaxx 200cc 2.02 64cc
4.030 Bore
240 @ 0.400
270 @ 0.600
On your bench.
How long is the turn around for flow testing?
Maybe a week.
Is this part number 2121 ?
What were the flow numbers for the catfish?
What
@@WeingartnerRacing just kidding. You mentioned the best catfish you ever had. I made a bad joke I guess. Texas Roadhouse had a great catfish meal but they dropped it due to lack of demand. Very disappointed.
Before seeing the numbers i am thinking that 325cfm is lots from a 225cc port.
$30 to Flowbench a cylinder head, U should advertise this every time you talk imho.? Food for thought...
Marys Grill?
Yes, have you eaten there?
Fun
Yep don't like the spark plug area also
Moral of the story... if they copied a Brodix, just buy the Brodix.
you only charge $30 for a test and evaluation? Seems really cheap to me even without the video.
I cannot believe you will flow a head for 30 bucks. My local engine builder wants $700
I would be rich if I charged that but $30 is for one cylinder.
Trick Flow would spank it
👍🏽🇺🇸👍🏽
So buy AFR heads
Understand not using a pipe on the exhaust. Who knows the size and the angles
😲
add Nitrous or blower
They are comparing apples & oranges.
Disappointed with the exhaust flow. I've seen better out of a modified stock cast iron SBC
Everyone always bashed be for eating catfish. Its a tasty chunk of meat, why wouldnt you eat it?
Many things keep the catfish from becoming popular nationwide. First it is a fish with no scales. So in turn many religions speak against eating it.
Secondly the catfish is like a carp. It feeds and mainly resides on the bottom of its waterscape. So there brings with it a muddy taste in the meat.
Though I am like you, I like it now that I'm older. My second cousin that was much older than I taught me that if you take carp or catfish and soak the meat in a bowl of salt water for 24 hours it will draw the muddy taste out of the fish.
If it were only that easy for things like pond raised lobster.
Hey Eric , Do you think it would have flowed alittle, better numbers if it,was a 64CC chamber vs a 72cc. Just asking your thoughts on it. A customer of mine bought the 64cc version for a 383 supercharged 12psi max motor for street that I am building for a S10 blazer project. Thanks for sharing your knowledge videos.,wish you lived closer to Maryland.,
Pass on the catfish.I have Chrons disease and it just about killed me.My brother took one last ditch effort and put me on A salmon/greens/alkaline water every day diet. Literally every single day. Six months later I put weight back on and got my color back and the doctor said to me you figured it out and he walked out of the room. I am still in shock to this day so grateful for everything.
@@kramnull8962 i would way rather eat a catfish over a carp. I have eaten a few sucker but didnt really like them. A couple that were under 20" werent too bad. You run into issues with bigger ones being full of mercury and they taste like they died a week before you cooked them
725 uh nahhh
Unless managed directly by a non Chinese company (e.g., Honda, Dell, etc.), they cannot deliver consistent quality and/or believable performance specifications.
If you love your engine you'll pass on Chinese heads
So, flat-out false advertising!!
Don't buy Chinese
