I am of the opinion that it's better to have any type of knife on you in all situations, even in Church. I read a story years ago about a man defending himself from a cougar. He somehow managed to pull out the only knife he had, a Victorinox (no mention of the model), open it, and proceed to stab the cougar multiple times, all the while it was literally ripping him to shreads, and the authorities found the cougar dead nearby. Miraculously the man survived the attack. I am an avid cyclist and I even carry an easily deploy folder, clipped to my jersey pocket for that just in case situation. It has fended off dogs on two different occasions, one dog even has a scar across its nose.
@@411Outdoors I've been thinking about it, and the problem with that knife you have, and the Tokyo Spike I have, is they do not make much of a wound channel, because the blades are very wide. I've been carrying my Buck 117 Brahma on my hip, and its about the same length as that blade you have, but with a deeper belly. Just something to think about.
I like how you mentioned and carrying a knife for more than just defense against human threats. I have two small dogs and I don’t always want to or need to carry a pistol in the event. They were attacked a piercing knife could get a dog off of them safely.
This would make a nice "Jagdnicker" which is a German hunting knife used to put a wounded animal out of its misery. I think that is where the knife would shine in a non-defense role. I'm not sure I have a need for it but it is one slick looking knife and it looks extremely functional. Great review.
Own the blade. The edge out of the box is not fantastic. But even someone who is far from an expert sharpener can touch it up (me with a worksharp). Once done it will slice into steak readily enough. But it is not a slasher. I don't imagine it would fare too well on a pork man test. But as you identify that is not its role. It is a high adrenaline gross motor skill option. And given that most of us have not been placed in that situation it is all thought experiment. Given that it is a pry bar turned into a shiv it will absolutely not fail. Hammer or ice pick grip once your hand locks around it, it's not going anywhere. The end of the handle is, well, unique would be a fare word. I doesn't add to the functionality of the knife, but once in hand it doesn't really detract. Though an argument could be made that a more conventional butt would give a better hammer option. The sheath locks the knife in tight which is always a good thing. Withdrawal though? So little of the handle presents. From a worse case scenario adrenaline dump perspective where you imagine yourself performing at your worst, not your best, the inability to wrap a full grip for withdrawal is for me a big downside. Perhaps a lanyard could help with this, though the gap would not be bridged entirely. So when moments count you lose time. I found removal of the clip and the attachment of an ulti clip allowed for deep pocket carry. Though this did require cutting a small hole in the pocket, lol. From a legal perspective? Again worst case scenario, it screams that it is a death dealer. Depending on where you live this is something to take into consideration. I like this knife a lot. And God forbid if I am placed in a worst day of my life situation I would welcome it. Though when I look at a blade like the the enuff 2, I can't help but think that, while not as strong, it presents full grip from sheath, is a good piercer, is more utilitarian in appearance, and has greater slashing capabilities.
I've seen this video a few times and every time I get anxious because that same thing happened to me when I was younger. And that's one of the main reasons I have always carried a blade. I really want one of these though.
Another blade - quite a budget one - Cold Steel Roach Belly ... Pretty sturdy little knife ... And very pointy ... Definitelly, that TOPS blade is very strong - but CS Roach Belly is strong enough I guess ...
@@411OutdoorsAlso, they have some interesting lnives on that Drop Forged series - including some tactical blades - is one with a ring on the top of the handle - I don't recall its name - pretty tough and stabby 😊
Pretty uncommon to EDC more than one belt knife, at least for me. The knife I am carrying must have multiple functionality in multiple grip styles. My go to every day EDC is the C.U.T 4.0. This knife has excellent performance from Bushcraft to skinning game. Fantastic knife from TOPs. I can see this knife being reviewed as a boot carry candidate. You were correct in identifying it's true nature, it's a shank.
I love this design but 1095 is the wrong steel if you want to carry this knife concealed. 1095 just rusts far to easily. I have the el pionero & as much as I love the knife, it rusts like crazy when carried concealed.
DAM YOU!! after watching this i had to go look online at Amazon and they had 2 left and i just had to buy it, just came in and WOW what a wicked blade can't wait to take it out. side mote my brother just had his dog attacked by coyotes and his wife only had a stick to chase them off with just a few days ago. it happens stay safe
Tjat is a nice slim blade, but that grip is a deal breaker right away. I practice libre fighting, and 80% at least of what we do is ice pick grip, edge facing inwards. I don't like blades that dictate how to hold it. Those finger choils is nothing for me. Tops El pionero is something very similiar, if slightly smaller. But the grip there is much more comfy in any position.
I know this video has nothing to do with tantos but I want to know why you love them so much for self-defense I have the recon tanto and just ordered the magnum I hear that they are good for self-defense and penetrating, but I also hear that they are not good for penetrating what’s your input on this??
Actually my friend, Tanto knives are some of the strongest penetrating blades there is. I’m more into reverse edge blades these days such as the disciple from shivworks nevertheless, Tantos are made for fighting👍. The tip is like that is a guillotine if you think about it
If you are in the market for self defense from animals, especially dogs, bear mace/pepper spray is preferably imo because 1. it has some range 2.. more importantly you doing have to kill some poor dog. But yes, a small fixed blade ought to be the foundation of your protective carry, a good last resort. Tops Knives similar to this: Ranger Bootlegger 1 and 2. Larger longer blade... far more practical for general things. A more multi-talented shank. The 2 has a saw on the back. and the Rapid Strike, quite similar to this in size but double edged and a thinner blade= easier penetration on soft targets. This knife above is surely great if you have to stab through a car for some reason. Than there is the Szabo express which has the same toughness as this i that you can keep the dagger tip after hammer fisting the hood of a truck a dozen or more times. Unlike this it comes with a double edge variant...superior fighting knife but far far less concealable. It isn’t as if Tops knives are cheap but they all are pretty reasonably priced it seems, they don’t do what Benchmade does (price gouge, create artificial scarcity purposefully, up-charge because of its brand name. Spyderco, although to a much lesser extent for sure, does this... or at least more than tops. All of the tops models fall around 150 bucks which is pretty cool. 150 bucks is just getting you in the door for a benchmade... and it will have the cheapest plastic handles, G10 and Micarta (which can be found on budget knives) are saved for the 200 plus costing knives.

Great review!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Reminds me of an over sized Cold Steel Spike knife. And boy howdy is Tops proud of that knife.
Oh yeah haha! When I hold this and then I hold my Coldsteel Spike I understand a little bit

This just arrived for me today. Love it.
It’s a real beast! 🙂

In my neighborhood you should actually carry about a dozen of these if you're going for a walk at night 😅
😂😂 i hear ya👍

My pleasure! Love your work! Especially that Cali Cobra🔥🔥I’ve got some more reviews coming.
I have one and love it. I agree, a dagger for animals will make a difference

Great informative video again. One can only imagine how many snowflakes melted down whilst watching it. Keep up the good work. 👍🏼
Thanks, will do! And you’re so right lol!
Interesting design
I carry the street scalpel 2, thinking about the street spike though.
I carry one too. Quite possibly my overall favorite knife. I love the thin handle.
Excellent knife, bro!
it will make a great boot knife as well

I got the last one 3 minutes ago😆
I saw a guy faught off a 750 Pound brown bear with a buck 110. Would you say this blade is skinnier then buck 110 or the same?
It’s a little thicker

That’s for the reply what I hear is that it’s good for strength but it won’t penetrate good at all you good experience with easy penetration?
You did not give a price point.
I don’t always necessarily talk about the price because they always change but I do provide a link. These are usually over $160
Expensive lol

Yep, the Lions Toothpick is not a cutting tool. It is a stabbing implement. Even if you put a good edge on it, the edge retention sucks.
Oh yeah I'm diggin this blade. 👊🏼🥷🏼
