A sad reminder that all the shops in the current Freshney Place would have fitted within the old Riverhead Centre given that the part facing on to Victoria Street has so much empty space. RIP to Binns, BHS, Lawson & Stockdale, Woolworths, half of Boots, WH Smith and countless shoe and clothing shops. Now the big draw is Poundland, TK Max and Primark. I confess I still use Millets. Many thanks for refreshing my old memories.

I only remeber the B & W one as I was a lucky Guy that escaped from Grimsby in 1976 when I joined the Army and never returned, but I now live in the South of the Country where the Winters are a lot milder, and the Summers a lot hotter.
Really enjoy your throwback videos mate. Really sad, I remember being young teenager and I genuinely use to be really excited getting a bus into town going into Andy’s records, electronic boutique(game), virgin megastore, Woolworths, Argos ,WH Smith all in the hunt for cds, games and wrestling videos. It was genuinely a great day out when I had some pocket money that I use to look forward to after a week at school topped off with a good ol maccies or Burger King. To be fair though unless a countryside town with some natural beauty all around most small towns have all become the same, it’s not just Grimsby.
@@superduperwillsaxbyyou actually had to go out and hunt for everything but there was something satisfying about physically doing that. Now you can get everything at touch of a button, but even if there was something you couldn’t find you had to mail order and send cheques, it could take weeks until you got the item you wanted. I never thought I would end up regretting giving all my vhs’s away that I collected from going to various stores in town and Meadowhall and now they are creeping up in value. Now silvervision and wwe have said there will be no more physical media after this year, it will make all that stuff collectors items

Use to go in Thursday night shopping near Xmas trading some games and using pocket money to get some of the latest releases, they always use to release the best games just before Xmas.
it shows how down hill its gone but in the year 2050 you will be looking back at the 2024 precinct as to how good it was, i remember people saying in the 1990's how bad the precinct is

Have no memory of the food court area or ever eating there. Related question - is the hobby and model shop still there next to McDonalds? You used to go down a flight of stairs and it was a bit like a dungeon!
Yeah, it was called Turners Traditional. The shopping mall used to be so vibrant. I used to love going there to spend my pocket money. It was always a good day out. People were a lot happier and nicer too. I so miss the old days. Life was far simpler and so much better.
Oh the irony…… the Precinct ripped the heart of the old town and now it too has suffered the same fate. Who is to blame? Idiot councillors or the internet.
Sad seeing what a shell it has become, that’s what happens when you charge extortionate rents like they do. Used to be so much better especially the Thursday late night Xmas shopping.

Wimpy was near Woolworths in the precinct,I worked in Mister Minute shoe repairs and key cutting opposite the friar tuck pub.
