    Thankyou for these last few videos, personal for me, my grandfather is from waimamaku, we are proudly Ngati pou, of teroroa(iwi), with strong ties to ngapuhi and ngatiwhatua, some of our relatives come from taratara.. and aslo my grandmother's last name( Kingi) descends from Te whareumu of kororareka I've been wanting to know more about tewhareumu... thankyou kiwi codger

    • @kiwicodger
      @kiwicodger  ปีที่แล้ว

      For more on Te Whareumu, read all of Augustus Earle's reference, he spends a number of days at Kororareka. Te Whareumu was referred to as King George, is this where your grandma's last name Kingi comes from?

    • @taliaware1110
      @taliaware1110 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it proudly is through his son hori tohua Kingi... I will have to have a look at that,. My grandmother's side is also of Ngati korora/ te waiariki from the tutukaka coast, I grew up spending lots of time in ngunguru, my whenua is on the sand spit side, I never go told by my family of the huge battle that took place there. It's through my journey assisted by you I've discovered there was a great battle that took place there when wherowhero took Utu upon my ancestors... I'm lucky to say that my whakapapa is rich with musket history. I come from the whangarei erea but decent from kawiti, whareumu, motu tepeke who fought with kawiti against the British, commander willingby Shortland an Israeli man in the British navy. Keripeti te peke married kimete Amos Amos Roland's Daughter... I don't know if any of those names sound familiar... I'm very proud of my lineage

    • @kiwicodger
      @kiwicodger  ปีที่แล้ว

      Everyone should be proud of their lineage, it honours those, often unsung heroes who have gone before. I am familiar with all those named, less so for Te Peke. Do you mean you whakapapa back to Willoughby Shortland...if so that would be an interesting story.?

    • @taliaware1110
      @taliaware1110 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, our history goes that Willoughby had relations with kawitis Daughter , before kawiti seperated there union, that hay three kids two of which were twins, I descend from one of the twin named Heni riria.. yes I totally agree every single person should be proud of there descent, and honour and remember ones ancestors whom struggled to get us here.... Thankyou again kiwi for your insight

    Really cool videos!! Do you know why the 'h' is always written as 'sh' in these old accounts? I find it very interesting that Hongi is written as Shunghie and even Hokianga is written as Shukiangha or something like that. Was there a phonetic change that happened between then and now?

    • @kiwicodger
      @kiwicodger  ปีที่แล้ว

      Back in the day the H must have sounded like Sh. Most English accounts of this period for this region have this spelling . When Kendall finally developed speeling of the Maori language then a commonality started. Languages evolve, adopt and adapt. Also te reo is the base layer, each area had its own quirks, just like the diverse accents you get in Great Britian.

    Mahoe maybe shortened name for Oromahoe in the Bay of Islands there is a Marae there of Ngati Raahiri. Location halfway between Kerikeri and Paihia.

    • @kiwicodger
      @kiwicodger  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s a possibility but unlikely, too far away. The idea of moving Hongi from Wharera was to ensure that Pa didn’t become tapu. Mahoe had to be close or close for canoe travel. I feel it’s in the Whangaroa area, most likely in the Pupuke area.

    • @fredhayward1350
      @fredhayward1350 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kiwicodger Thanks for that yes it would be more likely. I see there is a Hapuu listed up that way Te uri o Mahoe.... maybe a connection?

      Here is a link indicating Mahoe, or Mahoe creek in a land description document. If you can figure it out, great, let me know...but I think it would take a local to now know these places.

    Gets me wondering if there were a treatment for this wound that could've saved his life.

    • @kiwicodger
      @kiwicodger  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cheers for the question. When you look at Hongi's progress there seems quite good optimism in the weeks after the wounding. Modern medical intervention would probably have got him through. By Nov he sounds pretty stuffed, no mention is made of his appetite which I found unusual. Still perhaps antibiotics could have worked wonders on that seeping back wound. Once infection sets in you'd be in trouble, air coming out of that back wound and gunk being sucked back in, its a miracle he made it through to March.

    Tena koe Kiwi. Great story about the end of a great rangatira. (*)
    Mahoe and Whareroa Pa are near Pupuke, west of Kaeo at top of Whangaroa moana. Evidence in Waitangi Tribunal indicated Whareroa was pa of Tuhikura (HH’s mum) where he was dying, but he asked to be moved to die in the whare he had built at Mahoe (‘a small flat beside Pupuke Rd, below Wharera Hill, labelled ‘tapu place’ on subsequent county maps.’[Sale]) so that Wharera would not become tapu. Report says the wahi tapu is ‘behind the homestead on the Hayes property’
    * engari it’s complicated

      Great research Errol. Had a feeling that it had to be close by. Poor old Hongi must have just been a skeleton, its a shame he faded away and didn't go out with a bang. Having said that, if he died on the battle field, then the missionaries would have been flushed back to Port Jackson, who knows what that would have caused... Cheers Errol, good stuff
