    'He went to settle a score... or something of that nature.' Surely, in the end, given the magnitude of the slaughter, it must just have been about self-aggrandization and the drama of war for war's sake. I think this was also a large reason for Nga Puhi chiefs being so keen to sign the Waitangi Treaty... with finally tribes to the south properly armed and looking for revenge.

    Kia ora from Illinois in the US. I recognized William's voice immediately. I often listen to the Aotearoa History Show and knew it was him but had to replay the beginning to be 100% sure I was correct. Thanks so much for this Podcast William.

      Completely savage and merciless... as if his native culture was reacting against the Christian culture that he was very familiar with.

    "Noble savage" thinking. Hingakaka, the largest battle in New Zealand history, occured before the colonial period. The South Island was also embroiled in constant wars of conquest for a century before the colonial period, the conquest of Kati Mamoe and the extermination of Ngati Wairangi on the west coast in the 1700's, the enslavement of Ngati Tumatakokiri at the turn of the 1800's prior to Te Rauparaha's invasion.

    Traditional weapons - ritual, sportmanship and chivalry. Muskets in the hands of the northern chiefs - disproportionate slaughter, bloodlust, savagery, and... feasting. Apparently, some toa died from bloat from too much feasting [not sure if this is true].

      Wouldn’t be surprised the same thing was said about Te Wherowheros Warriors at the Pukerangiora Pa Massacre in 1831.

    While australians were eating potatoes from NZ, Hongis men were eating women and children from the middle of the North Island, what a great food exchange program.

    For people unfamiliar with modern Maori people ,it's amazing how many will clam to be direct ancestor's of the well known Maori chiefs of the past ie Hone Hiki ,when most in truth are descended from Maori war 'slaves' or lower ranked member's of tribes (which numbered in the ten of thousands across New Zealand ).Maori people in the past and today value being the ones who know knowledge others don't -often individual's will say they know the truth this all part of Maori Mana (gaining respect/rank for themselves in other eyes ). No one Maori today will know the truth ,only the many verbal stories and written accounts put together from all account's verbal or written from Maori and non Maori can a likely truth be known for the History of New Zealand and it's people . Like most history the winners will set the narrative ,but Maori have an approach to history where the losers would 'spin a tale' to make them look much better to save their 'Mana' . Maori are a fascinating people and how there people evolved and developed there ways of life and believes shouldn't be forgotten

      @Aaroniusnz ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is true but it’s really easy to pick out inconsistencies in these people’s narratives whether it be common sensual stuff (Many modern Te Arawa claim that Tama Te Kapua was the paramount ariki of Hawaiki - but if this were true he wouldn’t have left to come to Aotearoa); or just straight up inconsistencies in timelines/descendants (many modern Māori skip 15 generations per Tupuna some times); or just straight up lies (claiming to be a descendent of a chief without knowing their actual whakapapa).
      There is enough factual, researched, noted whakapapa from either Aotearoa or even from other islands that note whakapapa for us to spend a bit of time to check 😂

    • @Aaroniusnz
      @Aaroniusnz ปีที่แล้ว

      One thing I love doing with these people who claim Hongi’s descent is asking his Marae on both sides and barely anyone could name any of the three he associated with

    William Rey often has a woke bias in his representation of NZ history sadly.Although he recalls Hongi actively sort weaponry and went to England and Australia Hongi Hika’s need for revenge or “utu” stemmed from the battle of Moremonui in 1807. In this battle Nga-Puhi were severely beaten by Ngati Whatua and Hongi’s sister, brother and half brother were killed. William Rey doesnt mention this.
    This wasnt the European that caused these wars as Rey would have you believe.
