- Fixing a GE/Hotpoint washing machine which is making a loud roaring noise during the spin cycle. This video covers the complete steps of replacing the transmission. The washer in the video is Model HTW240ASKGWS however, the video is applicable to any newer style of GE/Hotpoint washer.
Thank you for this! Now it's time for me to fix mine. Excellent video!
You're welcome! Best of luck with the repair!
How much grease does the transmission use?@@DuctTapeMechanic
Thank you for your strait forward walk thru. Our machine is up and running great. Rented deep socket 32mm from Autozone and used my Milwaukee impact for the troubling nut.
Great tip on where to get the socket! Nicely done!
thanks for the video, i bought this washer and dryer set, what a couple of pieces of crap. the heating element went south in dryer after a year, now the washer out of balance and all the clothes end up on one side during spin cycle.
@@johnflew agreed! GE appliances quality over the last 10 years have gone down the drain!
Man you are awesome for showing people how to deal with it themselves and save some money. Now I actually have this issue. My question is where can I find not only the piece you replaced but all other parts to this machine?
Appreciate the kind words. GE website is probably the best bet, AppliancePartsPro is good, and even Amazon has certain parts ( just search by part number)
I was able to fix my washer 2x thanks to you. 🎉amazing work friendo😊 five stars. ⭐️🌟✨🌠🌌
Great 👍 Glad I could help!
It's really enriching to watch this know-how to fix the problem by myself. Thank you very much for posting this video.
You're welcome!
Yes! I didn’t know I could until I did!
@@DuctTapeMechanic…how about a dishwasher install 😅😂I need your SME
Yes I have a lot of tools but that size. It’s was $59 as security and when returned you get the $ back
Great video Thanks
Thank you now I have to find the trans unit
Your welcome!
This worked great. But now it won't spin with a full load in it... Any help?
great repair video Thank you mine is 10 years old I probably buy new machine
You're welcome! Yes, 10 years is good!
So you take it all apart and then put it all back together?
Yes, except you swap in a new transmission
Did you replace the washer on the inside of the basket? Is it reusable?
I would reuse the washer
That machine was made by Mabe in Mexico.
Could this issue cause the belt to shift causing uneven wear on the belt
How much oil does the transmission use in this washer?
Hello my GE top load does sound like a jet taking off in spin cycle for the last 30 or 40 washes. 2 questions, Could it be a loose belt, and if it is a bearing, what is going to happen if i keep on using the machine while it is loud during spin? Thanks
If it sounds like a jet taking off, then it is definitely the bearings in the transmission. If you don't want to replace the transmission (I don't think it is cost effective too) them just continue to use the machine. Eventually, the bearings will seize, and the washer will stop spinning.
Thanks@@DuctTapeMechanic
My washer does not have an agitator. Would it be a similar process? Would I need to replace the transmission or can I get to the bearing like older models? Could I send you a video or audio file of the noise I am hearing?
Yes same process. No you cannot just replace the bearing
@@billkeogh1591 you should watch a tutorial that has an agitator
@@gillyhicks2325I think you missed my point. Mine does Not have an agitator. But thanks for helping out.
What oil is in the transmission? How much oil does it use?
I'm pretty sure this transmission uses grease and not oil. Also, it is a sealed system you can't open it to add the grease
What's the difference between the two? How many ounces of grease would you estimate?@@DuctTapeMechanic
If my washer sounds like it’s grinding during agitation and spin cycle (changed out the clutch , spring and belt) now it sounds like a clicking noise but not as loud grinding noise as before, what could it be 😭😭😭😭 help plz
Having the same exact issue!!
What is the part number to get one
Just search GE washer transmission Amazon
My washer sounds like this in the spin cycle. Is it supposed to sound like this?

I HATE, LOATHE a feature of this washer.
It is the following:
When I let it fill up with water, I add the detergent immediately so that I can add the dirty clothes into the soapy water, but if you don’t add the clothes in pretty much right away, it will begin to drain on its own without pausing. I’ve wasted SO MUCH, SOOO MUCH detergent because of this disappointing problem. So much money down the drain.
Agreed, horrible machine!
