I’m with you. My wife received one of these as a gift - it seemed like killing flies with a cannon to me, so I looked up your review. Very helpful and honest - thanks! Generally, I love all things tech, but I draw the line at expensive toys that unnecessarily complicate life rather than simplifying it. I have a steel bottle - it’s dumb - just a bottle. But it keeps water ice cold overnight or all day, doesn’t need to be recharged with a proprietary cable or any other cable, it’s nearly indestructible and it was MUCH less expensive than the HidrateSpark. I know I need to drink 3 refills per day and I track my intake with a cheap app (WaterMinder) on my phone. Works a treat.

I was soooo closed to purchase this water bottle. Thank you for the honest review! I’ll wait until the company makes some changes.

This is a very helpful review. If the company watches this you have every good suggestion. If they were able to address all of this plus add robust controls from shortcuts it would be a &100 water bottle easy. I would pay it gladly. As is this is an overweight poor quality water bottle with a gimmick.

Although I think the review is overall good, I feel like you didn’t understand the point of this bottle. It is not made for active people. Or to be used whilst being active. Nothing about its design says outdoors or active. It is meant for your office or home. And that’s where it thrives. Having it sitting still on a flat surface for 10 seconds usually isn’t too much of a hassle. Yes, you need to do it for the bottle to function properly. But it doesn’t feel like a big deal to me.
As someone that used to not drink enough before I got this water bottle, I didn’t need reminders that I have to drink more when I was active. But I often forgot to drink during the day when I was working from the office. Now I regularly hit about three liters a days without it feeling like a chore.
But if I want to go on a hike, I’ll pack a water bladder, because that works much better for the activity. If I go for a quick 5k run, I won’t take any water with me, because I will be able to drink up just a bit later. When I go to a gym, I take my old PET bottle that I fill up at the gym and which I will inevitably forget there at one point and I’ll buy a new bottle of water that will be my gym bottle for the next foreseeable future until I lose that one as well. The app can still keep track of your water intake, you just have to input it manually. And what is great about the app, and the main reason apple sells it in their store, is that it connects into the apple ecosystem and pulls the activity data from it. So it adjusts your recommended water intake based on how active you are. You spend a whole day hiking? Guess what, 2 liters isn’t enough.
This bottle is not a sports bottle and if you want to use it like that you’ll be very disappointed. If you want a stylish and a bit nerdy bottle for the office, this is a great option. And yes, the charger is inexcusable. I hope the next iteration will have a wireless charging and a usb-c.

Their marketing on their website highlights in big font a review that says the product is ideal “especially because I do not work a desk job. “ their Apple product page describes one of its features as “Carrying loop makes it easy to carry on the go.” Their marketing material also has photos of someone at a gym holding the bottle. So they are marketing it towards active people it seems.

I am a tec-freak and a notorious dehydrated fellow myself. I am doing home office for 10 years now and came across those bottle yesterday in an article. I saw that there is also a 32 oz (god do I hate those stupid imperial units) which would rather fulfill my needs as I don't want to have to refill my bottle 6x a day.
I think I will wait the next generation where they will hopefully fix a few things such as the stability of the bottom, the recharging concept and the stupid chug

is setting your bottle down flat after filling/drinking really that hard? lol you make it sound impossible to set it down for a second so it updates

Well, you have to put it on a flat surface for it to register. I have a water bottle like that at home but I take it almost everywhere now that way I can have water with me. Water is like one of my favorite drinks to drink because I don’t drink any other thing except milk coffee and water.

I wonder how much more does the bigger 1L version weight. I would like to buy the bigger version for mountain hiking.

Hi, do you have any other recommendations? Particularly, insulated water botttles that don't need to be placed on a flat surface to track every intake? Badly need this for a stubborn dehydrated parent lmao. Thanks so much.

Looks like you're better off without the smart water bottle.

are you sure you were charging the bottle correctly from a proper power source? You say you could not reach full charge after 6 hours and that your battery lasts 5 day whereas on apple store it says it charges in 2.5 hours and lasts 10-14 days.

I read a few other reviews to make sure I did not have a faulty one off unit but a lot of others reported the same

will it register if the app is closed or the app has to be open?
