Thank you, that makes much more sense than what I was thinking. The other one people are confused on is the pig talisman, but I think people have come to the conclusion it’s referencing the saying “in a pigs eye”
36:31 One of my favorite characters from this show; every second he's on-screen is just gold; from his actually being stronger than the protagonists in most fights, to the hilarious way he names his attacks, and especially his interactions with the talismans and other magical elements of the show, just too perfect lol
One of the things that made this show popular is that it came out right around the time Pokemon was huge and collect-a-thons were really big at the time, both in Pokemon and Nintendo 64 platformers like Banjo-Kazooie. So the built in premise of the show, unintentionally, made it mirror Pokemon's success in "collecting them all" and getting badges. Only with the show, it was talismans and secret doors and boss fights and such. That's why I loved the show so much as a kid; the hook was perfect, at the time.
That’s a great point. The talismans are a great little collectible too for this, and the later seasons definitely wanted to keep it going like with the oni mask of the week instead of talismans
That's always struck me as odd considering that the slogan "gotta catch 'em all" was coined by someone who had nothing to do with the creation of the games or franchise in general (Norman Grossfeld of 4Kids). Pokémon has always rewarded being good at battles more than acquiring lots of Pokémon (though the badges thing makes sense, even though those are more like boss fights than really collecting anything).
i learned the meaning of the word redundant from this show when one of the goons has two talismans but they are the horse and dog so he says "immortality AND regeneration thats redundant" basically they do the same thing so he feels cheated.
Just because you can’t die, doesn’t mean you still can’t feel pain. In some cases, people ask for the sweet release of death when they can’t handle living in perpetual agony anymore.
Out of all legendary martial artists that are also entertainers Jackie Chan seems to be the perfect fit for a children's cartoon based on his likeness unlike most just because he has a naturally bubbly personality that feels just perfect for a lighthearted action cartoon
it surely is a breath of fresh air now it seems that every single cartoon must be either the most jaded/ sarcastic/ 4chanpilled shit possible a rip-off of family guy or a rip-off of cocomelon with literally nothing in between
I’m glad you found it, it’s a fun show and I plan to cover the others from that morning block of Kids WB. And thank you SO MUCH for the huge super thanks!! I really appreciate it more than I can properly express here, but it really does help a lot
I think one of the best comedic decisions of this series was allowing every character good or bad to have this humility threshold where they stop fighting and say "woah chill out, someone might actually get hurt." Scenes like everyone loosing it when jade knocks out the pilot are both hilarious and humanizing.
That’s definitely a big reason why this show worked so well, and in part why Jackie Chan stood out the way he did in the US. I wouldn’t say I’m a marvel fan, but its explosion in popularity in the 2010s was in part because superhero stuff was very stoic, but they combined action with pauses for comedy, like you said
@@Colby2D Yeah I'd argue he was one of the main inspirations for a lot newer age movies. His comedy feels like the consequence of being a stunt man; having fun, but checking in to see if he pulled his punches well enough. And every once in awhile he or someone would show off and land on their face, but everyone laughed together humbled. I can definitely feel that passed on to newer media and its definitely present in the show too.
"Its weird that they dont mention that jade was defending the kid from the bully" this hasn't mattered in public school within my lifetime. Teachers have been punishing both the instigator and the defender for as long as I was in school and definitely since.
I work with a few archaeologists and i often say when i learn thats their job, I don't only work with them just a few, i say that when i think of archaeology i think of jackie chan and it throws them for a loop. the speech in episode 11 about his job is why i always think of him honestly.

I see what you mean about Jade. Like Scrappy (who never bothered me either), she’s a surrogate for us: finds all this stuff cool despite the danger and wants to join in stopping the bad guys. The difference is Jade is able to deal with bad guys her own way on several occasions where as far as I can remember, Scrappy was always overpowered, which is the only thing about him that did piss me off. The writers always made Scrappy as weak as Snarf despite his bravery on the few occasions he actually got to fight instead of Shaggy or Velma snatching him up before he could do anything, ruining his character. They should have made him more like Muscles Mouse (Jerry’s cousin) in Tom & Jerry or the rabbit in Monty Python & the Holy Grail instead. No wonder he became the main villain in the Scooby Doo movie as he was done with everyone’s shit. Someone even made a fanfic of JCA which did a similar thing as the scooby doo movie, with Jade becoming Shadowkhan Queen again. I’ve not actually read it though. Anyway, I really enjoy how Jade was handled better than Scrappy was and she’s one of the best characters besides Uncle, Tohru & Jackie himself.
This content is GOATed with the sauce. Really hope you'll do more video essays about JCA. Its was one of my favorite shows as a kid, and I havent been able to find it on any streaming sites, so im absolutely down for more of this format.
So when you were talking about how to activate the talisman in episode 4, i don't have the definite answer but i believe i do know I don't remember every episode, but in a later season, the bad guy henchmen have the snake talisman, while they're driving away in a truck. One of them has the idea to put it in the cassette player (or something similar, i don't remember) and it turns the truck invisible (but not the people). This leads me to believe that applying pressure to the talisman is simply enough to activate the powers, and it turned the statue of liberty invisible because the toes gave it enough pressure Also not even spoiler worthy in case anyone wonders. Assuming my memory is correct, its like a 10 second gag that doesn't have any major impact on the episode
That makes sense! Other talisman like the horse would only activate when the holder sneezes so I just kinda assume some talisman have random activations
Great video brother. I was 9 or 10 when this came out and watched it after school because i loved JC my dad first showed me rumble in the bronx when i was maybe 7 and was hooked for life.
I was gonna explain the sheep meaning, but I saw that was taken care of. I think I can explain pig, though. It may come from the expression "pig's eye," which means strong disagreement or saying something cannot happen. And we get that in a pig having laser eyes as well as a pun in the heat beam laser eyes. And good to find someone that isn't hating on Scrappy. I never hated Scrappy or Jade and find them fun, adventurous characters willing to be proactive in what they do. Looking forward to seeing season 2!

Thank you for covering one of my favorite series. Here’s a few things that some people don’t realize about this show. 1. The show does very good foreshadowing like you pointed out Jackie in 1 episode mentions about the free doughnuts and when tohru wants to help after the shendu incident he was asked why do you want to help and he mentions what Jackie told him a few episodes before. There is also no such thing as filler in this series because characters that you don’t think would show up again do in either continuing episodes or seasons plots. 2. The series has a lot of Easter eggs and homages to Jackie’s career. From episode titles, to stunts, fights, etc. Hell his archeologists outfit is based of his movie armor of god.
I didn’t know the archaeologist outfit was a reference, that’s really cool! I’ve heard some of the specific fights are references to movies, but I haven’t seen enough of his movies to recognize a lot of them yet! Thanks for checking this out

36:31 One of my favorite characters from this show; every second he's on-screen is just gold; from his actually being stronger than the protagonists in most fights, to the hilarious way he names his attacks, and especially his interactions with the talismans and other magical elements of the show, just too perfect lol
I like him naming his attacks like it’s half tai chi half him just being the wild card lol
Hak foo was so extra lol.
Damn i couldve sworn he was in it a lot more than 1 episode.
I think he returns in future seasons
@@cdogthehedgehog6923 They've got another 4 seasons to go through; he definitely makes a few more appearances
"I see theyve never watched mucha lucha"
Epic foreshadowing there.
Now that's a show I remember that and Yin Yang Yo
Mucha lucha should be sometime this summer lol
@@Colby2D what about Yin Yang Yo? Thinking of trying that show?
That's pretty funny! I felt that way with pokemon I learned so many random words and things from it
Just because you can’t die, doesn’t mean you still can’t feel pain. In some cases, people ask for the sweet release of death when they can’t handle living in perpetual agony anymore.
It’s just like Finn said in the episode you’re referring to, “Immortality hurts”.
Out of all legendary martial artists that are also entertainers Jackie Chan seems to be the perfect fit for a children's cartoon based on his likeness unlike most just because he has a naturally bubbly personality that feels just perfect for a lighthearted action cartoon
Yeah he’s definitely the right amount of silly where the action movies from the early 2000s were a good combo of badass and funny
it surely is a breath of fresh air
now it seems that every single cartoon must be either the most jaded/ sarcastic/ 4chanpilled shit possible
a rip-off of family guy
or a rip-off of cocomelon
with literally nothing in between
nah, rambo and robocop are better for kids /s
YES, THIS WAS MY CHULDHOOD, id forgotten what it was called, thank you for making this video
I’m glad you found it, it’s a fun show and I plan to cover the others from that morning block of Kids WB. And thank you SO MUCH for the huge super thanks!! I really appreciate it more than I can properly express here, but it really does help a lot
@@Colby2Dwait, this is just the first season, my favorite season is the one with all the shadow masks
Oh yeah they have the oni masks too! I definitely plan to cover more in the near future!
@@Colby2D i cant wait! Which shadows are your favorite? Mine are the tiny little doods
@@AxekyI don’t remember which mask does what, but tarakudo stands out to me the most!
True, was the same for me
I work with a few archaeologists and i often say when i learn thats their job, I don't only work with them just a few, i say that when i think of archaeology i think of jackie chan and it throws them for a loop.
the speech in episode 11 about his job is why i always think of him honestly.
That’s really funny, I never associated him with archaeology despite this show.
@@Colby2D It's only because of that speech that it sticks with me so strongly honestly.
just like i only specifically remember entomologists are people who study bugs because of a scene in star trek deep space nine.
The sheep makes you fall asleep and the pig turns the target into crispy bacon.
The heat beam eye blast was bacon! Of course😅
This was easily one of my favorites growing up. My dad was also a huge fan too because Jackie Chan.
That’s really cool, I can totally see an older fan of his checking out the show!
51:43 I always say the artstyle is an excuse to save both time and money on backgrounds. It may look poor quality at first, but once you realize that they use all those resources saved on backgrounds for real fluent actions scnes all is forgiven.
The masks especially fascinated AND scared me as a child. They were super cool but kid me was frightened of getting it stuck to my face lmao
If you’re talking about the Oni masks, honestly it was pretty creepy
@@Colby2D yeah I am talking about those! But I'll say I did alsp particularly love them, and they sparked an interest in Youkai and other Japanese mythical creatures for me at a young age ^^
This show was such a fever dream. No joke, this video unlocked a slew of childhood memories lol
Lol it’s very whacky in the most y2k way
This was one of my all time favorite cartoons growing up! ❤ The theme song slapped hard, the lore was interesting and I fell in love with characters like Uncle 😂. Nobody ever talks about it, so I'm glad you did.
This man gives us the content we want. SUBBED!
I really appreciate it man
I had the ps2 game of jackie chan adventures, and I had a blast everytime I played it. I'm loving seeing these shows from my childhood in their entireties and your takes on it.
Thanks for watching! And I was debating streaming the ps2 game sometime lol
I just spoke uncle's line after he knocked out captain black. That's official, that's a core memory
He was so real in that scene
Time
Have fun with the rest of the series, and I only wish I could experience it all for the first time again.
Thank you! I’ll probably cover season 2 next weekend, not sure if I’ll go over the rest after that, or maybe combine the later seasons into one big recap
Lmao! I was hoping you'd do this one next. Another childhood favorite.
Thank you I’m glad you’re here!
I love your channel, seeing all the cartoons from my childhood explained and in order and not just random episodes on the tv is really cool
Thanks! There will be more jackie Chan in the future, would love to know other shows you’d like me to cover
You should do huntik
That’s really interesting! I like Jade’s ongoing plot as the shadowkhan queen, and it’s called back a lot in the next season!
This content is GOATed with the sauce. Really hope you'll do more video essays about JCA. Its was one of my favorite shows as a kid, and I havent been able to find it on any streaming sites, so im absolutely down for more of this format.
Thank you. And yeah it’s on TH-cam channel called throwback toons!
Damn. This MoFo don't miss.
I appreciate it🥺
THIS SHOW IS AMAZING
As another note,
Something I noticed as a child was the backgrounds. They are SO unique. I love it!
So my question of the video is "What did we learn from this video?" And the answer is and must always be "MAGIC MUST DEFEAT MAGIC!"
This was the Best cartoon Ever. Needs a complete series dvd set.
So when you were talking about how to activate the talisman in episode 4, i don't have the definite answer but i believe i do know
I don't remember every episode, but in a later season, the bad guy henchmen have the snake talisman, while they're driving away in a truck. One of them has the idea to put it in the cassette player (or something similar, i don't remember) and it turns the truck invisible (but not the people). This leads me to believe that applying pressure to the talisman is simply enough to activate the powers, and it turned the statue of liberty invisible because the toes gave it enough pressure
Also not even spoiler worthy in case anyone wonders.
That is so awesome, I still need to check out rumble in the Bronx but I had a similar experience with my family and his movie The Tuxedo
@@Colby2D dude it's simply the best and i believe its free on tubi
I was gonna explain the sheep meaning, but I saw that was taken care of. I think I can explain pig, though. It may come from the expression "pig's eye," which means strong disagreement or saying something cannot happen. And we get that in a pig having laser eyes as well as a pun in the heat beam laser eyes.
And good to find someone that isn't hating on Scrappy. I never hated Scrappy or Jade and find them fun, adventurous characters willing to be proactive in what they do.
Looking forward to seeing season 2!
Thanks! I’ve never heard the pigs eye expression before, that’s really interesting
God I loved this show when I was a kid. Thank you for covering it. It was so fun watching you walk thru it's first season. I can't wait to see you cover the next season and beyond :D
Thanks!! I think I’m gonna cover season 2 next weekend! Have a video set for this weekend on totally spies first
huh... Idk I feel like I remember them saying all the names of the henchmen in the show.
Green guy is Ratso, redhead is Finn, and sunglasses is Chow.
Now you know.
I may not have heard them mention them much throughout the seasons, but it’s kinda funny how little they say their names.
@@Colby2D Maybe I need to rewatch... oh no, what a horrible fate. (actually been waiting years for an excuse to rewatch it)
The fan wikia says this about the Dog and Pig talismans:
Dog (Immortality): References how dogs age differently than humans.
Pig (Optical Beams): References the expression "In a pig's eye".
I think the sheep talisman ability is based on the idea that you count sheep to go to sleep
I think I tried it once because my grandma told me to as a kid, it didn’t work😭
Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels, keep up the good work! : )
Thank you that really means a lot🙂
For those who didn't grow up with this on the air, this show was a reason wake up early on a Saturday morning.
They really had me setting an alarm on Saturdays

Thank you very much!!
The 12 talismans powers

Dragon Talisman: Combustion (Fire Blasts)
Monkey Talisman: ShapeShift a person or object into any animal the wielder thinks of.
Rabbit Talisman: Super Speed
Ox Talisman: Super Strength
Tiger Talisman (when split into 2 pieces): Splits good and evil halves of the wielder
Horse Talisman: Healing
Snake Talisman: Invisibility
Rat Talisman: Reanimates inanimate objects (Motion to the motionless)
Sheep Talisman: Astral Projection (Wielder goes to sleep while their astral self has an out of body experience)

Jackie Chan is a cartoon character irl
i wish. he kinda sucks irl
dude is too goated he got that toon force in him
The golden age of children’s cartoons. There was a time where Pokemon, Digimon, DBZ, Dragonball, Yu-Gi-Oh, Jackie Chan Adventures, YuYu Hakusho, Samurai X, Batman the Animated Series, Justice League, Gundam, Zoids, and soooo many more had new episodes every Saturday morning and every day after school
So true, some of my favorites. I loved watching yu yu hakusho on toonami in the afternoons
These character designs are so wild. I forgot how good this show was.
The head shapes and complexions are very unique and I vibe with it lol
Epic video! I made it a point to make sure all my Nieces and nephews watch every season of this show so my family knows what quality is in the future, now they all watch the old shows and movies as well so no peppa pigs, no sponge bob, no trash just gold.
What about old SpongeBob
22:41 the astral projecting sheep thing is because it is common to "count sheep" to help you fall asleep, which is also the state someone astral projecting would externally appear as doing. Pkus fluffy wool = clouds, and clouds also connect to sleeping
That’s a good point, and now I want to go back to sleep that sounds so comfy
What great timing per usual, my man. Hope you had a good weekend and thanks again for the content! 🙏🏿

Thank you for following along! And yeah I think she’s fine like a great balance to the trio of Jackie uncle and Jade
Bro, first Xiaolin Showdown now Jackie Chan's Adventures? You're reviving my entire childhood!!!
Aw im happy to hear that lol, that’s what I’m here for😄
Thank you for covering one of my favorite series.
Thanks for checking this out
Saying Jackie Chan has a "background" in the Hong Kong film industry is wild.
I should’ve said past or history lol, didn’t mean to undermine it
@@Colby2D it's not factually wrong but it just doesn't feel right.
@@TBDF12not even dude, it's literally the correct phrase to use, and the connotations of someone having a background in something is no small thing. If you think it doesn't feel right, that's on you.

This should have a netflix live action remake but the cartoon bits replace the live action as a topsyturvey nod lol also sheep is astralprojecting im guessing cause when people have trouble sleeping they may dream of Sheep jumping fence.
Better do live action then transition to animation during events that can't be acted in real life. Make it funny by making the thugs woke women but Jade roasts and always beats them.
I think there’s a cgi show that came out a few years ago, I’ll need to look into it
@@Jaiden_Anime_Shuns there's this one Korean ( I think I may be racist tho) superheroine show who's name I can't remember but her doing anime stuff in live action was godly hilarious, which is why i think Jackie Adventures could pull it off

Jaiden_Anime_Shuns What the hell are "woke women" and why the hell did you try to shoehorn a discussion of them into this topic?

It’s a fun show! Holds up better than I expected!
This was the shit back in the day 🥲
Absolutely endlessly adore this show. Ever season is a banger.
I’m definitely looking forward to checking out more beyond the first 2 seasons sometime
I used to really like Jackie Chan adventures and I even rewatched some episodes about a year ago. It's a little harder to enjoy the series when you hear about how Jackie treats his daughter, his infidelity, and his ties to communist China.
11:36 Also, I watched a video essay or documentary on youtube (I think) which claimed he didn't actually do all his stunts, just a lot of them. So basically, he's a liar and a hypocrite too.
I need to check out the documentary that seems interesting, and yeahh I was finding out more about the situation while editing this video, I didn’t know much about it before making this video
I dont remember how many times I rewatched this because it is being re aired a lot of times and I always never get tired of it.
Woah, hold on there, brother. You JUST finished talking about Xiaolin Showdown, one of my childhood favorites. In 2024 no less. Now you're on to Jackie Chan Adventures? Keep this up and I'll just have to stick around long term.
