It's not just the youth prisons that sets you up for failure, it's the entire legal system. Every step of the way, from arrest to prison to parole/probation. It's a business that thrives of repeat "customers."
Its messed up but thats exactly right. There's more money in not helping and in most cases jackin people up more expecting people to come back instead of actually helping and Rehabilitating people. It's cheaper, easier,.and makes more $.
Couple of thoughts...
1. what teaches a kid to not get involved in the criminal justice system in the first place? There is no right answer here... genuinely curious about the various opinions people have.
2. Prison systems being privatized didn’t work... and it is awful. but also government run models are jacked up as well due to an even bigger lack of accountability (think VA hospital).
Bring this up because we don’t want to privatize police... and many don’t want the gov to be in charge of the health care system.
Razor Ramon Chico (see what I did there?) jail and prison are 2 different things. I don’t think being poor automatically means jail sooner or later.
I do think not having money makes it more difficult to resolve the issue once it has occurred... that we can agree on.
Making good decisions though prevents you from getting to that point.
How do we help kids make Good decisions?
It's not the system setting you up for failure. It's your upbringing.
@@gunter1849 it's both, really. Schools need to be more proactive in teaching the basics of living in a society, because parents often don't do it. But then once you're in the system, it's set up to keep you there or keep you coming back, not to rehabilitate you. Not to mention all the ridiculous BS laws that make things illegal that you would never expect would be illegal, like jaywalking and prostitution. People unknowingly break laws all the time, because nobody takes responsibility for teaching young people how to not break them.

I got my jaw broke with lock in a sock, face slashed with soup can top, and stabbed once. Your stronger man than me I would have lost my mind going thru what sounds like a crucifixion! I would have done life an started cutting out jugulars soon as I could walk again.

The one time I got locked up I was lucky enough to stay out of any kind of drama.
There was one dude in my dorm that got caught stealing people's commissary... The two biggest dudes took him into a cell and beat the piss out of him.
All in all I was really lucky getting a good group of people to serve time with.

I stumbled onto your channel randomly, but am so glad that I did. This particular video stood out because I live in South Florida. I work with people in recovery from addiction, and have heard many battle stories about the judicial system down here. I wish these videos were shown to young offenders first going into the system, maybe it would give them some little iota that life isn't fried chicken and a nice cozy bed on the inside. I hope others hear the powerful messages you are sending out about life, prison, consequences and rising up after a fall. Keep doing what your doing and thanks!!!

That's the thing in jail especially big city jails whites are always outnumbered and they don't stick up for their own. When every other race does. Combine that with being a minority in those institutions.

Serg Gla I have faith in all human beings. I know it’s a sad thought they most of they fall into that path of violence, extortion, bullying, gangs, and drugs. That’s because that’s all that is provided in that living environment. If prison was actually ran to reform and give inmates the tools to better themselves I know there would be a change. You can’t lock up thousands of men and women treat them like shit and expect anything different than what goes on now. The guards allow a lot of these things to go on or even set it up. Sad world we all live in. If they had programs like therapy, social skills, computer/technology classes and much more there would be hope for them all.

my baby brother went through something like this. He was locked up at 15 for truancy and was incarcerated for two years with rapist and murderers eight and nine years older than him. He hasn't been the same since! Please pray for him if you can! Thank you for sharing these stories, spreading the word of what really goes on in these places!!!

I've watched so many of these videos so many times, I cannot believe some of the stories I've heard from this channel. This is the best scared straight type of education people need to learn fast. It's a cold place outside, but I never want to know the type of cold inside a facility.
He had me when it was 1 offense, slap on the wrist, 1 more offense and 10 years. He lost me when he said he had 20 slaps on the wrist
I was a guard in florida. Baker for years then YO for six years then I was on to better things. I was not like the guards he described. I gave a shit and I didn't take any shit. My Respect to this young man.

23 and 1 is my favorite channel and is the realest prison channel out there trust me I did git time, gladiator school and 5 years in adult prison. So believe me when I say this guy is a good dude and I'm happy he is doing successful with this channel. I watch this to keep this fresh in my mind because those who forget there past are doomed to repeat it.

Oh hell yeah I was hoping you’d have an interview with Smoke. He’s got some fire stories.
I did 4 years in a juvenile prison in Louisiana. They called it baby Angola. Did 1 and a half as an adult in a state pen. Picked up some more charges. They offered me 8 on a plea deal or take it to court and get 23. I fought it and got my charges reduced and haven't been in trouble since.
Juvenile was way worse the pen
i kept getting slapped on the wrist as a juvenile, it took 7 felony convictions before they sent me to the juvenile joint and i can say that juvenile joints are way way worse than any adult joint i been in.
Never saw Death be speechless, Neutron went through hell. But came out alive, that's what matters

Respect for his honesty and not trying to puff things up. I rather have someone who lost fights tell their story. I believe him 100%, no doubt with him. He's a real one.
Texas Death Row - Robert Pruett, was sent to prison for 99 yrs at 16 yrs old due to a Texas Law called 'Law of Parties'. He was present when his father and brother stabbed their neighbor to death. *At one time he was the youngest person serving time at an adult prison in Texas where he was rapped, beaten etc. He was serving his sentence at McConnell Prison and was convicted of killing a prison guard, Daniel Nagle, and sentenced to death. He spent almost 20 yrs on Texas Death Row and was executed in Oct 2017. Robert Pruett story is one of the most heartbreaking stories EVER. Our system is BROKEN!
In my teens i got caught three times for petty left with the same Judge all three times. He told me since i hadnt learned my lesson, the next time i show up in his court room he'd hit me with a felony charge. After i heard that i went to the Army and hadnt looked back

Smoke is about as real as they come. 1090 Jake had him up there and said word on the compound was Smoke had respect from every single gang because of what he went through during his TOH. I give Smoke major props for holding his own against groups til the point that they just tip their hat and he rocks out. This boy don’t try to put nothing extra on his story either. I heard you talking about YO campsi thought you meant camps. I got sent to a brutal one in Northern BC Canada when i was a kid. It was an old farm or something, like really old. No runnning water , outhouse and woodstoves for heat. We had to chop wood all day and haul water from the river. They would wake us up at 6am and we would do a run of 4 miles , then chow , then they worked us hard all day cutting and chopping wood. To get clean, once a week we had a hot box with water heated on a wood stove, and then had to jump in the river, even in winter, where it drops to -30 in the winter so would have to break ice to get in the water. Juvie is nothing anymore. In that camp we wanted so bad to go to juvie or even adult prison over that camp. That was in 1985 , it got closed down at some point after a kid died trying to AWOL. Cant even find anything about that particular camp anymore, i even did a FOI request and everything about it is omitted for some reason.
Damn I been threw gladiator school in cook county and never saw a beatdown that fucked up for so long.we had riots that didn't go 30 min sometimes. I fought a few beatdowns when I was banging but no shit like that. Glad that dude made it out and is on a positive note now!
