    Great update Petrik!
Don't stress if you feel like you haven't read enough! I mean, you read a real chunker in Wurts, which is probably equivalent to 4 books anyway.
FWIW, from a fan of your channel, there's no pressure to read more. We enjoy your thoughts and opinions, even if you only end up reading one book 😋
Enjoy every moment of reading for what it is. I'm confident the 5 stars are coming for you soon 😊

I only finished 1 book in June... my brain power was all about closing my classroom for summer break and end of school year activities and goodbyes with my preschoolers... then it was all about recovering... I did this with Red Seas Under Red Skies. ... and after a few more chapters, I'm at 71% in The Way of Edan, I might actually finish it in July! Lol, but .... last night, I finished Empire of Silence on audio, ... and promptly started Howling Dark.

So glad you enjoyed "Kavithri", my favorite debut of 2024 so far.
I read 11 books in June. My favorite was "Mirrored Heavens" by Rebecca Roanhorse, so emotional.
I was also invested in a Korean Historical Fiction, "8 Lives of a Century - Old Trickster" by Marinae Lee.
I also found my biggest surprise of the year, "Annihilation" by Jeff VanderMeer. (Not recommended for readeres who hate beeing confused, feeling lost and not having answers to the challenging concepts).
While I was wating for "Mirrored Heavens" to arrive at my place I re-read my favorite novella of all times, "Tainaron. Mail From Another City" by Leena Krohn.

I’m most of the way through Buehlman’s The Daughters’ War, and I think it’s going to be 5 stars for me. It’s different from The Blacktongue Thief - more serious and melancholy, more tragic, and more deeply moving. Still awesome. I love it.

Maybe let's just stop hunting for the next 5-star and instead revel in all the joy that these stories are giving you, might just be the mindset shift that will make you fall in love with a new story again! In any case, I think you should read The Storm Beneath the World by Fletcher or Riven Earth by Zammar Ahmer if you want something seriously dark again!!

loved hearing your thoughts on mistwraith! my personal recommendation would be to read Ships and Warhosts together as they were originally one book so Ships is a lot of buildup that pays off in incredibly emotional fashion with Warhosts. if you loved seeing the unicorns, whoo boi the latter half of the series is gonna delight you with the more trippy aspects. it gets really wild once you get through book 5 where the true scope of the story emerges and its FAR different than any reader ever thought before!

Hey Petrik, long time no talk! Wanted to comment specificaly re: 5 star books thus far in 2024. I've got 7 so far this year, none of which I think you've read.
    1) The Tainted Cup, by Robert Jackson Bennett - Start of a new series by him and just a wondrous, mysterious, and fantastic detective duo romp!
    2) Lyorn, by Steven Brust - The 17th of a prjected 19 books in the Vlad Taltos Novels. Been reading Brust for 3+ decades and this is one of his best. I know it probably won't make your list given that this series was started before you or most of your readers were born, but I had to mention it anyway!
    3) The Trials of Empire, by Richard Swan - 3rd, and final, book in his debut Empire of the Wolf trilogy. A challenging, and eminently satisfying, conclusion!
    4) Song of the Mysteries, by Janny Wurts - The final book in her Wars of Light and Shadow series, which you just, rightfully so, described in glowing terms, but needing another read to fully review. Well, again, as with Brust, I've been reading this series for just over 30 years, and have multiple rereads of every book under my belt, and can whole-heartedly say I'm still so in awe of her writing...it has only improved and I sincerely hope you continue reading her works. Also, remember that if you want to take a break from her series', she also wrote "To Ride Hell's Chasm," one of my top-ten of all-time favorite stand-alone works.
    5) The Daughters' War, by Christopher Buehlman - This is a prequel to his first fantasy work, "The Blacktongue Thief," back in '21. "Blacktongue," was my favorite work of fiction in '21 by a WIDE margin. I devoured all of his other works afterwards, and have had huge expectations, and even higher hopes, for this prequel as soon as it was announced. I devoured it all in one sitting, it exceeded my expectations, and upon finishing it, I immediately started rereading it.
    6) Witch King, by Martha Wells - Published in May of '23, but I didn't read it until earlier this year. Her first fantasy in at least a decade after the success of her outstanding sc-fi "Murderbot Diaries." I loved seeing her get back to her fantasy roots, cause she freakin' nailed this. Wonderful characters and a unique world. Can't wait for the sequel.
    7) Blade of Dream, by Daniel Abraham - Published July of '23, the sequel to "Age of Ash," and the 2nd of his Kithamar Trilogy. Another one I didn't finish until earlier this year, but another one I really should have finished earlier. His ability to evoke emotion with characterization and setting is just superlative.
Thanks again for the continued great reviews!

I have actually read 3 of the books you mentioned! The Tainted Cup is awesome, but I read that last year. Unfortunately, The Daughters' War and The Trials of Empire were both just okay with me. I loved the previous books of these two series very much! I will certainly read Blade of Dream. I'm waiting for the announcement of the third and final book trilogy, but I am a fan of Daniel Abraham's books. I find his books to be a comfort read for me somehow!

    • @dereksmith4509
      @dereksmith4509 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@PetrikLeo Ahh, gotcha, and thanks for the reply! So, even though you read an ARC of Tainted Cup, before it's publication date, you still won't bump it up to a this year read? I suppose that makes sense, since reading a book a year, or more, after it was published puts it in whatever year you did read it in.
I definitely need to go back and read your reviews of Daughters' War and Trials of Empire, and the previous works, to see why your, shall we say, lackluster opinion of them, didn't match my enthusiastic opinion. That said, I'm still just happy you read them both and it sounds like you didn't actively dislike them ;-)~
But thankfully, that still means I've recommended potentially 4 other 5 star books this year you haven't yet sunk your teeth into! Yay! Looking forward to more from you as the year continues!

I also did not have any five star books last month. They were all good but not great. Probably the most interesting one was the Death's Lady trilogy by Rachel Neumeier which l picked up on sale. It's a portal fantasy, which is not my usual preference.
However this one is different because the entire first book is the fantasy character being in our world and how they learn to function here, and then the next two deal with those from our world going back to the fantasy world with that character. I especially enjoyed the first book... the fantasy character is assigned a psychologist, who is trying to figure out how to help her with her internal rage...

I completed reading Eiji Yoshikawa’s The Heike Story. This was my first book by this author, though I have read several volumes of Vagabond which is based on his novel Musashi. Enjoyed it tremendously and am looking forward to attempting the original version, as well as Eiji’s other books. I aldo finished Sailing to Sarantium by GGK. Under Heaven was my book of the year last year but I have tried three other books of Kay’s since then and didn’t like them nearly as much as Under Heaven. It was pretty good! I know Petrick wasn’t crazy about it 🙂 Under Heaven remains my favorite GGK novel but this lies at a close second. Looking forward to reading Lord of Emperors. I listened to Childten of Ash and Elm, a history of the Vikings, in the car this week and was really enjoying it up until the section on Biking funerals which made me feel a bit ill. As the only first hand account of a Viking longship funeral we have is Ibn Fadlan’s (if you’ve read Michael Chrichton’s Eaters of the Dead you’ve read it word for word) the writer of this nonfiction book quoted it quite a bit and then had to add some extra context which is really quite lovely to hear at 6:30 in the morning driving some the highway before one has has near enough coffee.completed the Jack London novel The Sea Wolf 🐺 this man can bloody write. I would strongly recommend any of his works for anyone who feels they would like to start reading more classics, or just anyone in particular. I also finished the Martian Chronicles by Bradbury which I read with my mom. I think she enjoyed it a bit more than I did, maybe because she grew up during the Cold War era and this reminds her of the books and shows she grew up with. I liked it though. Good stuff.
I have also been attempting to finish the Legend of the Galactic Heroes series and Demon Slayer. The pleasure district arc was my favorite part of demon slayer so far!

I don't know what your overall rate of 5-star reads is; for me, it's about 1 in 5 to 6 books that I read. If your rate is similar, you would expect fairly long stretches of books without a five-star read. Which doesn't mean that such a stretch isn't frustrating, of course.
June was a good month for me, even though I had five 1-, 1.5-, or 2 star reads.
28 novels (one a reread), 1 anthology, and three novellas finished. Most of those were in the OK to pretty good range, but I had 6 five star reads:
Connection Unknown, Michael Chatfield: the first book in a new-to-me LitRPG series. I really liked his 10 Realms series as well.
Beginnings, David Weber et al.: Anthology in the World of Honor series. Multiple brilliant novellas in this volume.
Hawke’s Target, Reavis Z. Wortham: Book 3 in the Sonny Hawke suspense series, largely set in west Texas. Wortham is quite variable, but his best stuff is brilliant.
Nine Princes in Amber (reread), Roger Zelazny: I've probably read the full Corwin arc at least half-a-dozen times and I still love it.
Penric’s Mission (novella), Lois McMaster Bujold
The Prisoner of Limnos (novella), Lois McMaster Bujold: The Penric series of novellas has become one of my favorite fantasy series, with seven of the eleven books I've read being 5-star (and the other 4 being 4-star).

I have to admit that personally I preferred «Virtual Book» (book #1 in the «Bridge» Trilogy), but there are indeed some very interesting concepts (some more relevant now than ever) in «ATP» and the line «the red ghosts of European time» is pure poetry from Gibson! Petrik, hear me out, how about picking up R Scott Bakker's The Darkness That Comes Before? I'm confident you'll like it at the very least.
    In June I read:
    *Historical-Fantasy*
Children of Earth & Sky / Guy Gavriel Kay
    - Carried over from May. Loved it.
A Brightness Long Ago / Guy Gavriel Kay
    - My new favourite Kay I've read so far, and a new favourite book of all-time! Book of the Month!!!
All the Seas of the World / Guy Gavriel Kay
    - Pretty good. Glad I read this loose trilogy in publication order. I understand the lukewarm reviews and I seem to have liked it more than most, though my favourite parts were the tie-ins to ABLA, CoE&S and Lions of Al-Rassan.
    *Sci-Fi*
Vorkosigan Saga 1: Shards of Honor
    - Definitely be continuing this series.
    *Southern Gothic*
Child of God / Cormac McCarthy
    - It was fine, but really creepy at times.
For now I NFNed Jonathan Maberry's Patient Zero and Christopher Ruocchio's Howling Dark. They're good, just not what I'm looking for right now.
As for what I'm currently reading:
    *Historical-Fantasy*
The Last Light of the Sun / Guy Gavriel Kay
    - Kay's re-imagining of the Viking invasions of King Alfred's England, its really good so far.
    *Sci-Fi*
    Cloud Atlas / David Mitchell
    - Still early days yet but I haven't a clue wtf is going on.
    *Thriller*
Winter of Frankie Machine / Don Winslow
    - Really good so far.

That's why I think of pages read and not books. You can read a 1000 page book or 4 with 250. My only complain is the time wasting since it will feel more on 1000 page book. As you read more and more books your mind will want more and something to surpassed your expectations. It will be harder. That's why I hate reviewers that after 1000 book still give 5 book reviews left and right. Oh well. It will come .

    • @PetrikLeo
      @PetrikLeo  หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah I get what you mean! I haven't reached 1000 books, but I'm starting to feel that for sure. It's getting much harder to find a 5 stars fantasy books because you've read so many of them. :')

@@PetrikLeo it's like , oh I've seen this trope, oh this is noting new. You began to be more rigid. Its truly a shame because thinking back only nostalgia makes a five book from your early years a five star book. Well some of them. At least. I believe in that regard you could try different things like bakker grimdark. There is nothing like it (at least that's what People say) so it will innovate or focus on other genres like horror, historical or sci FIi. Stuff you usually don't read as much. After some months go back again. I think that will help. Just suggestions I usually do
