- Hi everyone! Here it is. It's been a while since I posted a book review here. After four years of having The Pillars of the Earth in my to-read pile, I finally read this book. This is the first book in the Kingsbridge series by Ken Follet, a highly acclaimed historical fiction series, and here's my spoiler-free review of The Pillars of the Earth. If you've read The Pillars of the Earth or the Kingsbridge series, let me know your thoughts on them. Which one is your favorite book in the series?

This was a foundational book for me as I read it twice back in the early 90s, not long after it first came out. I have always loved Gothic cathedrals, so that was the initial selling point, but I also found myself engrossed in the story. I'm glad you loved it, Petrik!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy thank you so much, Philip! The book certainly made me truly think about how magnificent Gothic cathedral is, even more so than before!
Pillars of the Earth is a great gateway for fantasy readers to explore historical fiction (it was for me!). So glad that you loved this book - it's a remarkable read and a top 10 of all time for me. I hope many of your viewers pick this up based on your recommendation!
Thank you so much, Josh! It is a good pick as one of your top 10 of all time. You're right, too, that it would serve its job well to ensnare readers into reading more historical fiction! 😄
The cathedral is the centre of the world, so we do have considerable world building. I think that is why is works so well for fantasy readers. Has been a long time since I read it
I remember reading this book and being somewhat initmidated, but it is one of the best things i've ever read.
I was intimidated, too. Glad it didn't stop me!
I knew you'd love it. In fact, I don't think there are any fantasy readers out there that wouldn't.
@@mikesbookreviews and you're absolutely right! Spot-on recommendation!
It’s such a fantastic book, the others in Kingsbridge are wonderful too.
I was kind of shocked that a medieval book about building a cathedral would be on my favorites of all time list, but I have read this book several times and it’s always wonderful.
That's what I'm feeling right now. I can't believe I grew to care about the characters and story inside this book this much. Definitely will read World Without End and the sequels! :)
My favorite book of the year so far and one of my new favorites of all time!
Likewise! :)
I love this book! It got me thru many ER trips with my mom when she was dying from ovarian cancer in 2009.
@@emilyreads5207 so sorry to hear about the passing of your mom! 😔 I'm pleased to hear ths book helped you in some ways.
One of the best books of all time!
@@Gwyndon you got that right!
Follett is my favorite author of all time and pillars was my introduction to him as well. His ability to develop characters that give you actual visceral reactions is unmatched. Ive read about half of the books hes ever written
I definitely will read more books by him. World Without End is next! 😊
It's definitely one of the best historical fiction books ever. Somewhere in the top 3 next to Shogun and Lonesome Dove.
Guess I have to read Lonesome Dove, too! :)
Agree PIllars of the Earth and Lonesome Dove you feel like you're there with both.
100% agree with these 3 historic fiction novels (and series). I read Pillars years ago and Shogun too. I finally read Lonesome Dove this year and loved it as much. Great books!
I thought Lonesome Dove was incredibly slow
I need to read this! Has been on my pile for so long. I have heard almost only great things. Follett's willingness to explore a wide range of characters in particular intrigues me....
It's truly incredible, Will. I don't see the possibility of you not liking this. Give it a read someday!
Do it!
Mike spoke about it and loves it too. Now you. And both of you say it never was boring. I'm intrigued!
I certainly hope you will like it, too! :)
Oh my goooodddd it’s sooo goooddd
I really need to reread Pillars of the Earth. I read it for the first time in high school (by my own volition - not assigned reading) and I loved it so much. At this point, I've forgotten almost everything about it other than the fact that I loved it at the time. Seems like a good enough excuse to reread!
Time for a reread! Let me know what you think about it. 😄
I read it for the first time when I was 12 years old! (33 now).I certainly didn't understand everything back then, but I absolutely loved it. I read it many times since then.
That happens sometimes. I remember playing Final Fantasy VII when I was a kid, and I didn't understand many details and depth of the story. After I replayed it... I was shocked by how amazing the story was. And over and over again. Many stories are like that! :D
I’m glad you finally were able to read it. I’ve loved this book for years and I even stopped Salisbury cathedral in the 1990s to see the building, town and countryside that was a model for this book. Maybe on a future visit to England you can visit as well
@@GentleGiantJason i need to check out Salisbury Cathedral someday. 🥲
This was a great read!! I’ve purchased the rest of this book series. Happy reading to you!!! 😊🎉
Happy reading to you, too! :)
I'm so glad you loved Pillars, Petrik! It truly is an incredible book! I read it right before you started it, and it became a Top 3 read for me of all time. In fact, I read both Shogun and Pillars back to back and they were some of the greatest reading experiences I've ever had in my lifetime. I had a good feeling you were going to love this one too! I also was lacking on the 5 star reads this year before these two, but they did the trick and then some. It always feels so gratifying when you read something that meets or even exceeds the strong word of mouth!
Thank you so much! It always feels gratifying indeed when something hyped ends up becoming a new favorite book inclusion. I hope the sequel will be the same! :)
Great review and spot on! I am also a recent reader of Pillars of the Earth. After enjoying it thoroughly, I immediately read the 2nd, World Without End and I'm half-way through the third, A Column of Fire. I have to say, each book is outstanding! I enjoy the learning of the time period in which each book is set. Ken Follett clearly did his research. It was great coming across your review, well done!
Thank you so much! That's very kind of you. I look forward to reading World Without End and A Column of Fire ASAP!! 😄
I am so glad you loved it. It is one of my favorite books. I think i need to reread before reading 4th and 5th in the series, as it have been years
Thank you so much! You might be able to just jump into the 4th book as it is a prequel to Pillars of the Earth. Maybe! :D
@PetrikLeo Maybe. But these books are just so good. I was more meh on a third one, because it was less about Kingbridge than I wanted, but it was still good. The first two are masterpieces, imo. Though they might be too similar to one another, so it is good to have a space between them.
I expected to be bored with the architectural details but found myself intrigued by it instead. The characters were so convincing & so alive to me. Your praise is definitely not an exaggeration! Thank you for a great review.
Yes Petrik! Ken Follett is one of my all timers! I love Kingsbridge, Century Trilogy (makes 20th century history read as grippingly as epic fantasy) and he has so many wonderful standalones. Hes not one for super complex story structure or overtly fancy prose. He writes high concept ideas in the most digestible way.
Thank you, Michael! This means I have a LOT to look forward to. 😄😄
@@PetrikLeo he's one of those authors who has "misses" you still think upon long after.
He's just wonderful!
I am so happy for you that this lived up to the hype for you, and that you found another coveted 5-star read this year!! This book has always been on my TBR, but I have to admit it had slipped down the priority list again over time. Gonna have to bump it back up thanks to you, it sounds incredible! Hope the sequels will be just as amazing for you when you tackle those!
Thank you so much, Esmay! It's about time I encountered another 5-star read. I'm glad this one succeeded! :)
One of my favorite books. The rest of the Kingsbridge novels are also amazing. I would argue that, in my opinion, the third book "A Column of Fire" edges out Pillars on my tier list but only barely.
Noiceeee. I look forward to reading them all! Most likely not soon but definitely will! 😄
One of my favorites. I have read all in the series....love them.
I look forward to reading World Without End. Pillars of the Earth was awesome!
Started reading the book after seeing your recommendation. Till now I'm really enjoy the book. I will also read The labyrinth of the spirits. Thankyou for the great recommendations. ❤ from 🇧🇩
@@cosmic1642 awesome! Make sure the previous 3 books first before Labyrinth of the Spirits though!
So happy to see you finally read this book! This book is so special to me. I started this book while I was visiting Santiago de Compostela and this book enhanced my experience of being there.
I also loved The Evening and Morning. Great prequel to the series.
Thank you so much, Jieun! It's great to hear how this book enriches your real life experience. I think it will do the same for me whenever I get to visit a Gothic cathedral! :D
Ahh I am so happy you finally got a 5 star read! I guess I should add this to my TBR!
YESSS. You should read this, too, my friend. It's incredible!
Glad you liked it! This is how I’d rank the books.
1. World without End (I think this is my favorite over Pillars is because while the protagonists undergo huge trials and struggles I wasn’t stressed out all the time for them as I was in the first book and that made it more enjoyable for me personally)
2. Pillars of the Earth (A very close second)
3. The Evening and the Morning (I really enjoyed seeing the humble beginnings of the town and the start of everything)
4. A Column of Fire (A far cry from the first three but I still finished it and enjoyed some parts)
5. The Armor of Light (this one was actually a DNF and I lost interest after a couple of hundred pages)
5.
Interesting! It seems like people generally love the first two books of Kingsbridge the most. I'll try to pace myself reading through the series so I don't run out of it anytime soon! :D
I agree! Columns of Fire isn't striking me as #2 and #3
Yay, finally another 5 ⭐ read - so happy for you, Petrik! 😃 And great review!! I feel like this is something I will enjoy as well. I've been hearing about this book for so many years now, so I guess it's time to finally add it to my TBR pile and make sure I get to it in the near future 🤓
Thank you so much, Karin!! I have a feeling you'll love this one as well. It's terrific.
I bought the book a couple weeks ago but havent read it yet. But now you and Mike have both given it an amazing review and its got me excited!
Thank you! It's a sign you have to give it a try as well! :D
I'm really glad that you loved Pillars. It's so good. The prologue already had me hooked and it was intertwined brilliantly with the rest of the book.
I completely agree! I also loved how Follett used the same line from the prologue in the epilogue again. :D
Already on my TBR, but bumping it up higher now. Thanks, Petrik!
Superb! I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did! :)
I read this soon after it came out. I actually brought it at the airport as something to read on a flight, if you can believe that! I have never been more surprised by a book in my life. To this day, I still remember how enthralled I was. Truly a great book in the most unassuming wrapper.
Hear hear! Great book in the most unassuming wrapper sounds about right!
I picked this up in a little free library months ago and I've been soooo intimidated by it 😓 But your review is very encouraging! I will have to start it right away 🙃
It won't feel like a big book. So engaging and unputdownable. Enjoy!
I just found your channel and love it! Pillars just came in the mail so I'm stoked. Keep making awesome videos! 🎉
Thank you so much! I will do my best. I hope you'll love Pillars of the Earth!
YEAH!!!!! So glad to hear about a five star read for you! Shaking up your reading genres can be a great cure for a reading slump. Any future historical fiction plans?
I definitely enjoyed this book, however “A Column of Fire” the Kingsbridge novel which takes place during the Elizabethan Era is by far my favorite of the series. This might be just because I have studied that era since I was a kid. Fascinating!
Happy Reading!
Thank you so much! Other than World Without End and the rest of Kingsbridge, Lonesome Dove is the one high on my list! :)
Ken Follett's been on my radar for a while now, actually. Since even you like it, I might just give Pillars of the Earth a shot. What's another 1000 pages, after all?
If it's 1000 pages of brilliance, then why not!? :D
I just finished this book and I agree, it was never boring, I read it in a week and that's because it was a page turner. I was surprised it came out in 2009! But I'm glad I tried it
Glad you loved it! This book came out in the 80's or 90's I think!
I'm so glad you found another 5 star!
This is one of several books on my "massive tomes I must read before dying list." I did Shogun this year, and hope to tackle this one soon! 😊
Awesome review Petrik!
Thank you so much, Zammar! About time I have another 5 stars books. It's been 2 months!
I am so glad you loved it. It has been a very long time since I read it but it really is a special book.
Yeah, now I understand why so many people loved it! :)
One of my all-time favorite books.
It is one of mine, too, now! :D
And just as compelling upon reread. Having read PotE upon release I wasn’t sure if it would feel slower upon reread since I already knew the resolution of the peak moments. Rereading was just as rich because I could focus upon so many of the other aspects Follett delivers. PotE was and remains among my all time favorites.
I know I will reread this book, too, some day. Thank you for reading this with me, Arliss! :)
It's funny how much they felt like a fantasy novel to me just based on the setting. Really great book and yes the second one is really good too, looking forward to reading the rest of them eventually.
@@procurement3681 I think that's a big part on why it was easy for me to read it! 😄
I inew you'd enjoy it! Pillars is my favorite, but The Evening and the Morning is a close second.
Happy reading!
And you were absolutely right! I will read the rest of the series too sooner or later!
You and Matt increase my tbr so much by this point ! Not sure I'll get to it this year ! I need to finish Wheel of Time,Empire of the vampire series,Bloodsworn saga and Stormlight part 1!!! :)
I've been REALLY slow reading book 10 of Wheel of Time. I have no motivation reading this book. At all. :/
@@PetrikLeo Ah, I see.Im really sorry to hear that!!Hope U get through it somehow!!! 😭
I really need to read this book! I got the whole series in hardcover for Christmas last year, but I haven't started it yet.
It will be worth it by the time you get to it. I'm sure! :)
I have such a soft spot for the homie Ken. Master of plot. I think the characterisations are a little simplistic, but I can never put his books down.
Pillars of the Earth was sooo engaging! 😄
I've read it twice. It is one of my favorites of all time.
I have to read it again someday!
Definitely a stand out read for me - I read it when it first came out. I still want to get to the next two in the series, but have read several by Follett and have enjoyed all of them. He does a great spy story and some set during the world wars.
Hopefully we both will enjoy the remaining books in Kingsbridge. But if it continues, then Follett will become one of my favorite authors! 😄
Great review! Seems like I will have to check out this book/series sooner or later :)
@@MoeWanders thank you so much! Yes you do! 😄
Pillars of the Earth is my all time favorite book. I'm glad you finally got around to reading it and enjoyed it as well. World Without End is just as good but i still prefer Pillars of the Earth more. Happy reading to you.
Thank you, Cynthia! I look forward to reading World Without End as soon as I can! 😄
Dang! Had no idea! Just added TBR. Great video.
@@zenith3515 thank you! Enjoy!
This is SUCH a good book! It’s been about ten years since I read it, so I should reread it soon.
And yes, Prior Philip was one of my favorite characters lol. Learning about the TV series was how I first learned about the book and started reading it.
I think I'll check out the TV series, too. I heard it's great. I won't expect it to be as good as the book, though! :D
You got your 5, yeehaww. Nice review, Petrik!
@@calumlott thank you so much, Calum! 😄
Well I know what I’m adding to my TBR next! 😂 can’t wait!
You're welcome! Make sure you're in the right headspace for this. The content can be very brutal in several sections!
@@PetrikLeo thanks for the warning! I’m okay with brutal/graphic books, hopefully there is a reason for the brutality though 😬 I do think you gave fair warning in the review! My library has it and I put in a hold!
I'm very happy to hear that you liked it,finished it two days ago and it blowed my mind, loved every page. If it wasn't for Blackwater, this would have been my new Book of the Year,it's very very close. What I need now is a special edition from The Broken Binding 😊🤞.
P.S. Beside the three villains you've mentioned,I also hated somebody else,I will write his name down to not spoil it for new readers.

YEAH. You're not wrong. I refrained from mentioning his name due to spoiler. But my god, what a horrible bully. Also... I must try Blackwater then!
So happy you got another 5 star book! And if you are going to go for a few more historical fiction books as a result, please, please try the Essex Dogs series by Dan Jones! It’s so good! Gritty, GrimDark historical fiction where Band of Brothers meets the Hundred Years War! Really recommend it for Abercrombie fans!
Thank you very much! I heard great things about Essex Dogs series. Now that you pitched it like that... Well I have to check it out eventually! :D
@@PetrikLeo YESSSSS! Please do!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's an excellent medieval grim dark fiction.
It truly was. So good! 😄
I'm glad you enjoyed that weighty tome, as did I many years ago, but I'm extremely disconcerted that you have The Dragonbone Chair sitting ALONE on a shelf over your shoulder! OMG! 😁
Thank you so much!
Hahaha! Here's hoping I'll have a copy of Stone of Farewell to accompany Dragonbone Chair soon! 😂
😁 I hope so, too! Memory, Sorrow and Thorn (a four-book trilogy) are well worth the effort. As an avid fantasy reader for around fifty years, I was there when a good number of today's "classics" were first hitting the shelves. Some were absolute life changers, for me. And I've read some time and again, over those years. Enjoy!!! 😁
So glad you loved this book. Best villains ever written!! You must go on to the next book, World Without End just as good, even longer. Deals with the plague.
Thank you so much, Frank! I'll certainly read World Without End, too. Not immediately, though! 😂
I started this book in 2009, stopped at the page 300 and couldn't read more. Something similar happened with the final empire 😅
Oh nooo! That's succh a shame. :')
Finally, another 5 star read!
FINALLY!!!
Yay im so happy that you enjoyed pillars of the earth i read the book when i was 18 years old my favorite character is aliana the girl is a total survivor my favorite book in the series
Pillars of the earth book 1
Evening and the morning prequel i haven't read the thrid and book 5 yet
Thank you so much! Aliena is a STRONG survivor!
I am currently on Book 3 out of 5! Love the series and other Follett novels.
Well done!! Just a few more to go!
The Kingsbridge series is really one of the best series I've ever read. I bought the first one thinking it was fantasy but it was historical fiction, the author is really a master at making a compelling plot with characters you care about and want to see succeed. The villains are all so delightfully hateful and I love to hate them, their inevitable defeat is always so satisfying. Currently reading the armor of light.
I can definitely agree based on The Pillars of the Earth. It's historical fiction at its best. Good to know the rest of the series is more or less the same way! 😄
I have it and its on my TBR. I hope to get to it soon. I hope all the books in the series are great. I have heard that they are.
I heard the same thing. I think many agreed the first two are the best, though! :D
I loved Pillars of the Earth!! I need to read the others now!!!
ME TOO!!
Hey Petrik. As promised, if you were to give this book a 5 star, I'd get it; and I have. Look forward to reading it!
@@itscatoclock yeah. It's so damn good. 😄
Thriller/drama books set in medieval times are amazing!
You got that right!
I don't know why but one of the things I cannot forget about the novel is the building of bridges. LOL Every time I see an old bridge, I wonder what the foundation looks like, what the foundation at the bed of the river looks like. I was young when I read this novel, I think I need to re-read it in my current age.
Reread it and let me know what you think! You're right, though. Reading the book got me thinking more about construction and architecture. 😄
Hi Petrik,I love your videos. How come you have two copies of The Light Of All That Falls ,is it just to fill your bookcase ?Lol.
I got an extra copy from The Broken Binding! :D
This is one of my favourite books. Reading it did not feel like _reading_ it, but rather like I was _there_ when it happened and saw it happening. (I think I mentioned this in one of your earlier videos.) It's odd how fast it was to read after I had avoided it because of its length for quite a long time. (In fact, Daniel Green's positive review made me read it.) I have not yet read the sequels, but I have planned to do so after noticing that the Finnish translation of the latest volume just came out a couple of months ago.
I know what you mean. It's always such a good feeling when we're reading something and we get to feel like we're truly inside the books! :)
Top 10 for me…outstanding series.
If the rest of the series is this good, too, it will be one of my favorite series as well! :)
Another fantastic video! Thank you!
Thank you so much, Dino!
A perfect choice to get another 5 star read for the year!
This is my second favorite book of all time, only slightly edged by Kingsbridge 2 - A World Without End. I would be shocked if WWE isn't another 5 star read for you. Save that for when you feel like returning to Kingsbridge - there is no compelling reason to read it closely to Pillars.
Thank you so much, Chris! WOW. Your top 2 books of all time are the firs two books in Kingsbridge!? That's amazing. I am pumped to read WWE. But yeah, most likely not soon! Will take a few months break first!
A Dangerous Fortune is another great page turner by Ken Follett, and one that is hard to put down.
Thanks for the recommendation! Never heard of that one before. 😄
I loved it so much I read it twice, in the 90s and few years ago. I think I actually read all of the Kingsbridge books and the second best is for sure imo World without End. It would be a masterpiece, if it wasn't for the Pillars of the Earth; because they are kinda similar, so I think it comes down to 1) which one you read first (the books can be read independently, no problem) and 2) which characters your prefer. Well, I read POTE first and I think I also prefer its characters
Understandable! Thank you for providing your opinion on the Kingsbridge. I look forward to reading World Without End! :)
Second one is just as good. Keep reading the series!
Good to know. I definitely will!
This has been one of my faves
It's so good!!!
This is in my top 5 books of all time up there with Words of Radiance and The Stand
Well deserved position!
Thanks Petrik for the recommendation! Maybe a question but are there any other games this year other than the Elden Ring DLC that you intend to play? Black Myth Wukong perhaps?
Probbaly just finishing FF VII Remake and Lies of P! I'm so behind on my gaming 😂😂
You know that question, "If you are stranded on an island, what one book would you like to have?" Without a doubt, it would be, "Pillars " for me.
That's amazing! And I totally understand your decision!
Guess I need to add this series to my TBR list !
YES YOU DO!
Pillars is on my top 10 all time. I will say that World Without End is pretty much just as good. So whenever you get to it, I truly think you'll find it another 5☆ read
@@alynam82 thank you so much! That's reassuring. I'll save it as one of my ultimate weapon when I'm in dire need of a 5 stars read. 😂
What's incredible is that the sequel World Without End is even better
Some said the same thing. EXCITED! 😄
This book changed my life
That's so awesome!
Great book. Loved Priori Philip!
He's a great character!
There is book 0 in this series. Ken Follett came out with book 0 in 2020 to the series it's called "The Evening and The Morning"
@@kicou yeah I know. I have the entire series already. 😄
This is one of those books everyone hypes up so much that I question my own reading experience. For me, it was just a lot of trite melodrama which felt like it was trying to manipulate me into caring about characters that were relatively generic. Yes, flawed characters, but they didn't have a lot of depth, and I just felt annoyed at the heavy-handedness of it all.
That's unfortunate! Don't worry about it, though. We all have one of those books! :D
currently on before they are hanged and i can’t decide between this, the wall of storms or empire of the vampire after !!! but i’m so glad you finally found another five star after all of these decades 😂
Don't read any of them.
Thank you so much! Wall of Storms and Pillars of the Earth would be my pick! :D
Hi Petrik! I want to read The Pillars of the Earth, but would you recommend reading the prequel, Evening and Morning first? Thank you! Please tell Choco Boy, hello!
@@kimerlyhogan6567 choco boy said hi! You can read from Pillars of the Earth. I haven't read Evening and the Morning, too 😂
Noted😮 may buy😊❤
This book sounded boring at face value but it ended up being so compelling I couldn't put it down. The second Kingsbridge book was just as great!
I know right!? I will read more of Kingsbridge for sure!
the edge of the Century trilogy is outstanding too I am near the end of the second book. Follett is a great writer though I suspect if he was writing smaller books he may have more readers. I need to re-read pillars of the earth then navigate to the other kinsbridge books but that's probably not for this year.
Oh I have to check The Century Trilogy, too, after I'm done with Kingsbridge! :D
Excellent book, a 5 star read for me as well.
HIGH FIVE!
Ohhhh, that William... I loved to detest him... when the villans get what's coming to them... so sweet their downfall! I might read book 2 next year... because... someone has introduced so many other great fantasies. I just don't see when i'd fit it in. Lol
Totally agree on William. What a detestable character. Crazy what Follett did with this character. 😂 I think I'll read book 2 next year as well. Who knows though. It depends on my reading mood!
You should keep reading the series... It's wonderful
@@sicotibuckminster I will!
This book is the Fountainhead but with realism, heart and soul. I like Fountainhead btw but this is just better in every way
I mever heard of Fountainhead before! 🤔
@@PetrikLeo Ah I’m surprised, it’s not a fantasy book but it is fiction, written over 75 years ago by author and political thinker Ayn Rand. She’s famous for writing “Atlas Shrugged” if you’ve heard of it.
She’s usually very preachy with her political views in her writing, but not as much with “The Fountainhead”.
Anyways, it’s about a young architect (with bright red hair) who has revolutionary new ideas when it comes to designing buildings and who wants to design buildings and eventually a large skyscraper of his own. Much like in “Pillars” he faces hardships and set backs, but the book is centered around the idea of him making his own building that is unique and different from any that came before it. The side characters and villains are all unique and memorable too. highly recommend it and
I think you’d enjoy it if you gave it a shot
